What I mean is that typically users send out little bits of data (which are each individually signed) and then the clients aggregate them into different views (for example, the list of people I follow, or the list of people following me or the list of replies to a post). In most cases, the user just sends out the granular action (zap, heart, reply) and it's up to the clients to query the relay and build up the aggregate list. But with the list of follows, it works different, the user keeps republishing the FULL list and the relay treats it as replaceable, it just seems inconsistent with how nostr typically works.

I get that, seems like the whole system is moving fast and evolving organically which to me is promising. I guess there is something like https://github.com/vitorpamplona/nips/blob/relationship-status/81.md which seems like it could supersede a simple flat follow list.
How do these things kind of move into widespread use? Is it a matter of enough popular clients adopting the new protocol?

I think just publishing the individual follow / un-follow (delete follow) is consistent with how most things work in Nostr. If I want to see all the replies to a post, I have to query relays to assemble that list, same to see followers (as you mentioned) or reactions to a post. It is a mess in some sense but I think it's a good model.

This approach seems a little odd, why not post discrete events to follow and unfollow instead of editing and republishing a list? Just curious why we settled on that approach at the protocol level?

My home page on mossy.xyz is now my nostr feed! Lots left to do, lots of nips to explore, getting an art marketplace integrating, enabling zaps reactions and comments, providing some type of onboarding for non nostr users. But it was relatively easy to get this up and running, nostr is a very simple, beautiful protocol, it’s so satisfying compared to legacy social media, where I’m forced to either link to my content on their site or just replicate it.

I was hanging with so close friends this weekend and showed them nostr via primal, showed them zaps and described how you can just send money and that you own all the content you produce. It’s the first time I felt that excitement being the nerd friend in a long time, #nostr is something new

Hey! I kind of want it to be a nostr thing, in the sense that i want it to use nostr as the mechanism for identifying and sending money through the zap layer, instead of interacting with lightning directly, like layer 1 is bitcoin, layer 2 is lightning, layer 3 is nostr and I build my app on top of the nostr layer

GM! I have been experimenting with interactive visuals, I really am excited about the idea of having a web integration where people can send zaps to interact, like they are “feeding” the simulation zaps to power it, just for fun. Im so curious from an engineering standpoint what it would take to wire the together. Basically, how could I create a web page that people can easily send zaps from and have the backend detect that in realtime and interact once it sees the zap. 🤔

I think one of the most shocking facts I have learned as I’ve educated myself on how money works is that banks create new money out of thin air. I knew that the government could do this but I didn’t know private banks could do this. When you buy a home with a mortgage and the bank pays the seller, that money is created out of nothing - it isn’t a matter of the bank taking other peoples deposits and using that to fund the mortgage. Think about that, private banks can just print money and then profit off the interest. And if they get in trouble because the mortgage payments start failing, they just transfer that debt to the public through a government bail out.

I like the idea of using nostr as a blogging platform for my website, so on the blog page I would just show my posts and replies to my posts, and people how visit the site in a normal browser can view this but if you have a nostr id you can interact with/ reply. I don’t see anything out there to enable this but maybe i’ll start a little project around it

Having some trouble with my @nprofile…qnc2 wallet and can’t send zaps, I miss it! So much more satisfying than “likes”. Alby support has been fantastic so far, made it much easier to get setup with a LN wallet. I just ordered “Mastering The Lightning Network” very curious how this magic works ⚡️⚡️

I think that’s the heart of it. Bitcoin Cash seems to test this though, it is much faster partially because of large block size, which has its own trade offs but it does seem to indicate that you can do fast commits with PoW if you are willing to trade off some other qualities of the network.

I wanted to share some thoughts about the lightning network. but before I write anything, I just want to admit I’m coming from a place of ignorance here. i’m a software engineer and I’ve had a lot of experience building distributed systems, particularly event processing systems so I do understand the space broadly and I worked in finance for many years. that said I have a lot to do before I can claim to really understand the lightning protocol and infrastructure.
One of the things I think @nprofile…dg4z got just right in her book is her description of how the bitcoin network has a real simplicity to it because it can rely on proof of work. On the other hand, proof of stake networks are much more complex both in code and in their written description and their operation because they cannot rely on proof of work so they need to come up with other mechanisms of enforcement.
i’m having a similar feeling about lightning. It feels very complex and I do wonder if it’s because it cannot rely on proof of work so it has to twist itself into all sorts of loops to enforce good behavior.
Again, this is just my low information take on this so far. I’m going to spend time over the next few weeks trying to really understand the lightning network at a technical level.
I know there is a lot of interesting history here including the block size wars, I guess the engineer in me wishes that l2 could just be built using the same core PoW infrastructure as l1

Im so impressed and excited by Nostr, I only heard of it because I read @nprofile…ad8w s book and then found her @nprofile…695r link. I’m 45, I remember in the late nineties early aughts when xml and web services were coming out, there was this feeling that the web was going to be this messy organic system of services communicating, but what we got was more and more centralization.
I think the key is to start with signed messages, that’s the core, then figure everything else out, that’s the antidote to centralizing (and also the antidote to generative deep fakes). Nostr community really got this right. “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly” I love the mess, we will figure it out as we go!
