reminds me of Northern Ireland during the troubles, just another day la la la oh there is a row of soldiers with automatic weapons poking through the bottom of the hedges in next door’s garden, and there comes the military helicopter to pick them up again from the field behind. La la la here come the armored personnel carriers with the guy with the gun sticking out the “sun roof”, let’s wave to them for a laugh. It’s just amazing what becomes “normal life” during a civil war.

it’s also not true that you have to read non-fiction to learn from reading! You learn very sophisticated things from reading from the point of view of someone else, and it changes how you deal with other people. I always find that people who don’t read fiction as a matter of course are missing something in their understanding of others, but they are incapable of seeing it.

or with the cloudflare outage today, you need to understand that software ultimately runs on hardware and will crash if it runs out of physical resources to load a config file that has become too big. Probably some engineer did warn of the risks, only a Harvard business grad ignored them.

the popularization of the idea that Christmas should be a rest from the drudgery of capitalism can be traced back to the wonderful Charles Dickens, who did a lot to increase empathy with those at the thinner end of the wedge. I feel like the world could do with another few doses of this medicine right now!

for anyone in doubt, you should read about the Jewish council in Amsterdam during Nazi occupation that collaborated to communicate with families and advised them to comply. The Netherlands had the highest rate of Jewish people murdered, mostly because they had detailed records of where everyone lived, but also because complacency and reassurances meant that many left it too late to flee.

Also, isn’t the point of winning an election to implement your policies, not your opponents policies? Did you really win anything if you end up as a clone of you opponent? The only reason to do this would be all the political corruption you can engage in while in office.
