🚨 new study alert🚨
Antarctica, after net losing ice through the noughts and teens started to level off and gain ice the last 5 years.
We show that westerly winds and atmospheric rivers as well as sea ice loss helps to explain the pattern.

Our next hackathon/bootcamp on polar climate processes is now open for applications.
Funded by European Space Agency - ESA's climate programe under the #ESApisco project, and in association with the Horizon Europe project #SnowPI, we are looking for talented ECRs and senior researchers who are interested in working with them on small group problems tackling key processes in the #Arctic and #Antarctic.

I realise on the fediverse this is maybe asking for a flaming, but yesterday out of sheer curiosity I tried Claude for a simpleish coding task that I'd been putting off (largely inspired by @nprofile…lr9f 's latest on #theclimatebrink). The performance of Claude was seriously impressive. I am convinced the AI cycle is more than hype (and have been for a while), the chatbots have been a huge attention hogger, misleadingly so, while the serious work has been done elsewhere. (We are developing ML tools to supplement parts of our climate model workflows).
Now I'm wondering if there is any serious EU competition to Anthropic? - Mistral's codestral perhaps?
Because this kind of performance changes everything and we can't afford to lag behind...

Whilst waiting for weather to clear would love to spend some time prepping Loops/peertube clips, editing together music, text etc with some very short videos I've shot (very roughly -> don't expect BBC style nature documentaries), while in the middle of fieldwork.

🚨 New preprint out🚨 now, why has Antarctica stopped (net) losing mass?
We explore how declining sea ice but mostly increasingly heavy and frequent atmospheric rivers have actually led to a small increase in the mass of #Antarctica, in spite of increased discharge from outlet glaciers.
The increase is unlikely to be sustained, and a small increase in calving or discharge over the grounding line can easily turn it upside down, but nevertheless another long-term prediction about the Antarctic appears to becoming true.
Lots of important subtleties in this one!

Submitted a potentially high impact paper to Nature Climate Change. They have rejected and suggested NPJ atmospheric science.
Frankly, I don't want to spend enormous amounts of money at Springer, I was already ambivalent about NCC. So where next? I'm thinking maybe the Cryosphere? But perhaps we should give Science or PNAS a go? (Also expensive).
Scientific publishing is so broken, too many publications but we all rely on publishing for our careers and future grants. (And we need this one to be published, it's actually quite important).

It's being sold to "improve reading", but I actually think it's to help the publishers out.
Our libraries are brilliant and absolutely booming so it's not access to books that is the problem...

It looks like we will have tax free books in Denmark soon (Hurray!), partly to try an encourage more reading (though our libraries are booming) + after #PISA2022 showed alarming decline in reading ability. This was IIRC the case across the OECD, I haven't seen a very convincing explanation for the decline in maths, science and reading performance (which started way before COVID shutdowns).
Has anyone done any research to understand why?

It's not often genuinely new #glaciology papers get into real @nprofile…gkpg journal - but in this one it's a welcome technial advance - IMHO we've put far too much confidence in models and satellite data - these are important but they *MUST* be supplemented with in-situ data.
This is a really smart idea. Looking forward to diving into it.

Next week our ECR group are starting a #MachineLearning sprint to speed up the development of our new #IceSheet surface mass budget emulation models.
I'm looking for hints, ideas tips and inspiration to help smooth and accelerate the process.

Interesting piece in Nature last week about Antarctic research infrastructure. China has just opened it's fifth station, as the US retreats from science in general, and especially polar research. Many countries in Europe are also rather weakly present in the Antarctic, and there is no common EU programme.
In Denmark, we haven't even ratified the Madrid protocols for environmental protection of Antarctica, never mind signed the Antarctic Treaty. In spite of the actually rather strong Danish input to Antarctic research in general - much of which is driven by the fact that our future sea level rise will be largely determined by what happens in the Antarctic.

Some non-Danish colleagues yesterday were talking about how strange it is un Denmark that you can always see the horizon, there are no mountains in the background.
That's definitely only partly true, but on the other hand we have incredible clouds.

The article points out that the rise on borrowing and visiting libraries in Denmark is an anomaly in Europe*, which is a pity. It also rightly identified that the number of events, reading groups and a good selection of books are key to get people into libraries. IMHO, the other important factor is the digital side. It's extremely easy to see what books are available and to order from libraries across the whole country on the bibliotek.dk website.
And once you're in the library to collect one thing, it's easy to pick up a few more...

In Denmark we have one of highest proportions of renewables AND some of highest electricity prices in Europe.*

On reflection, I think the big mistake is the conflation of #AI with #LLM and #MachineLearning.
There are genuine exciting advances in ML with applications all over the place, in science, (not least in my own research group looking at high resolution regional climate downscaling), health diagnostics, defence etc. But these are not the AIs that journalists are talking about, nor that are really related the LLMs.
They're still good uses of GPUs and will probably produce economic benefits, but probably not the multi- trillion ones the pundits seem to be expecting

Have been in France for week + a half now, it's not impossible to get vegan food + vegetarian is straightforward if you eat dairy.

The FT has consistently excellent climate coverage. This one is a bit of a depressing read, but also enlightening.
It's quite clear that the vast majority of growth in coal use is in Asia, mostly China and India, and it more than offsets the shrinking use of coal in Europe and the Americas.
My great grandfather died after a coal mining accident, my kids don't even really know what coal is. I have to hope that the trajectory away from coal will be accelerated in Asia compared to Europe.
