Nobody can predict the future with any certainty. I am just expressing my view on the fundamentals and what I think might be likely in the short term price movements.
Personally, I don't think that Bitcoin will track gold. Over time, in the long run, Bitcoin will outperform gold as it has better properties as a medium of exchange. It is hard to get gold to transmit through any kind of electrical communication channel. Bitcoin is the first scarce asset that can do that.

I feel like the BTC price is about to take a bath!
I know that I am not going to be popular for saying this on Nostr, but please hear me out.
My reasoning is that there is too much expectation built into the price right now.
1. Every man and his dog, thinks that we are going to have an upwards price spurt in the 6 months post halving. Everyone that would be buying over the next few months to make that happen has already bought.
2. New people into the market don't self custody. Back in 2013, the people that discovered Bitcoin were the type of people that would study and learn how to self custody. We are beyond the inner circle now and most new adopters are going to see the ETF as the best way to hold Bitcoin.
3. The supply change as a result of the halving is not that big anymore. Relative to the total amount of bitcoin already mined, the impact on supply of a halving is reduced.
4. There is an unknown amount of new supply of Bitcoin IOUs. Anyone that buys bitcoin and keeps it with a custodian is getting a bitcoin IOU. Funds held on exchanges, within ETFs or in custodial wallets are all basically just IOUs. There is no limit to the number of these that can be created. Re-hypothication is real, it has been going on in the gold market for decades.
5. In past cycles interest rate cuts have been positive move for Bitcoin. The fed has clearly signaled that interest rate cuts are coming and the bitcoin price just isn't responding to it.
6. The fact that so many people expect the price to go up means that there it likely to be a lot of leverage in the system. When the expected price spurt does not arrive, some of that leverage will get unwound. For some people this will be by choice, for others it will be a liquidity event.
7. The mining network is now less profitable than it was at the bottom of 2022. The hash rate has gone up by more than the bitcoin price since then and we have had a halving. The ordinals boom has been and gone and they are no longer paying the miners for assets that have no intrinsic value. The miners are going to have to consolidate if the price does not go up some time soon. They are sitting on a lot of bitcoin that they have mined and chosen not to sell. They are, by their very nature, leveraged players in this industry and when they chose to keep their working capital in bitcoin, they are increasing their leverage. Their costs are in fiat and revenues are in bitcoin. A squeeze is not going to pretty for them and it will feed upon itself as they are forced to sell.
I hate to say it, but I think that it is different this time. The 4 year cycle is over.
The good news is, that this could be a new era of relative price stability for bitcoin. If that is the case, then it could smooth the path to adoption as a currency, as price volatility is a major barrier for many people.
Bitcoin acting as a currency is the real route to price increases in the long run. Let's keep building.

If something is shorted, then there must necessarily be a long which is the other side of the contract. A short is a bet on the price going downwards and there must be someone on the other side of bet. It is enabled by a broker borrowing the asset from one of their customers (usually without them knowing it) and lending it to the person that wants to sell it in the market.
In order for it to be sold in the market someone has to be buying it. So the short sale means that there are two people that bought the same ETF, the one who bought it in the first place and has lent it to the short seller and the one who has bought it from the short seller. The fiat system allows them to both own the same ETF at the same time.
The short seller could be another retail punter, or they could be the brokerage themselves. By selling you an asset that they have borrowed from another customer, they get some interest free money to play with. They are exposed to the price going up, but they don't have to mark to market.
All of this is enabled by the digitisation of the stock exchange. In the days of paper certificates, people had legal title to their assets and they could hold the share certificate in their own custody. Now they have no choice, but to custody with a broker. As I said, every brokerage account owned by a retail investor does not own the shares. The shares are owned by a nominee company that holds the paper certificates. This structure enables unlimited re-hypothication of assets. They have been doing the same thing with gold for years. That is how there is a 200:1 ratio of paper gold to physical gold. The finanical system is sitting on an enormous short position on the gold price.

The Bitcoin etf gives institutions the ability to short the bitcion price.
Every time a unit of the etf is shorted, a new unit is created that is available for sale.
An etf it's a derivative and institutions can create as many of them as they like, without necessarily increasing the issuance of the etf itself.
This is why net outflows from the etfs have been occurring since March 13th.
Fake supply can be created at the brokerage level. Nobody really owns the shares that they think they have in their brokerage account. The shares are owned by a nominee company. The customers have a derivative contract with the brokerage for the difference in price in Fiat money. The contract itself, f is in fact a debt obligation.
The contract is treated as colateral because the price moves in line with the equity that it pretends to be.
Does anyone remember collateralised debt obligations from 2008? That is what you are getting if you buy the bitcion etf.

I first bought gold coins when gold was at $1000. Just after Bear Sterns went down in 2008.
Since then, we have gone from the western world being quite bankrupt, to being completely bankrupt.
Our governments have spent enormous amounts of money that they don't have on stupid wars and on a re-branding of the flu vaccine.
The BRICS countries who have been stockpiling gold for the last decade. Who can blame them?
The average person has gone from not knowing why they would ever buy gold 16 years ago, to now seeing that gold is a way to preserve value in a terrible monetary situation.
And during those 16 years, the price of gold has gone up by 2.45x. WTF???
The price of gold has not even kept up with inflation.
Where would the price be if everyone that though they owned gold, bought the physical?
Re-hypothication is real. All of the tools that the banks have been using to sell people fake gold can, and are, being used to sell people fake Bitcoin.
Self custody is the only way to own Bitcoin. If we really want the price to go up, then we need to tell everyone we know, to get off the exchanges. Don't even think about the ETFs and don't belive the numbers on the screen that the brokerages sell to us.

This custody issue is something that really gives me hope for bitcoin. I started bought some physical gold back in 2008 and custody was never a comfortable situation.
In a safety deposit box, it can be stolen by the administrators. Buried in the garden it can be found with a metal detector.
Bitcoin is first time that we have really secure self custody storage. On top of that, the ability to have fast and cheap lightning notes on top in a decentralised way without rehypothication is a breakthrough.
You are right though, ecash mints all have capacity to create more derivative notes than they have underlying bitcoin for.

The riots in UK are a very sad thing to witness.
The governement's response to this has been to increase control over information disseminated on social media.
Mainstream media are supporting this narrative of censorship of free speech as they have a financial incentive to do so. Digital media has been threatening their business models for decades and staff at the news companies are doing whatever they have to sustain their salaries.
There is likely to be increasing encroachments on our right to free speech as the chaos on the streets gets worse across the world.
Twitter/X has been censored before and as long as it is a company with a board of directors, there are people that can be pressured to conform to goverment instructions.
It is now more important than ever to continue to build Nostr as a free speech system where we cannot be shut down.
Spread the word to everyone you know. As censorship shuts down the centralised platforms, we have a key role to play making sure that everyone can hear the truth about what is happening.

If I were a country at war with the UK, then I would offer free money to people when they register on their phones with their bank details. Once there is a sufficient number of people registered, a message can be sent to each of them offering more money to engage in terrorist attacks. Some of them will take up the offer and carry out drone strikes on key locations within the country. Simultaneous attacks on all banking data centres would take down electronic payment systems. Without the ability to buy food, society would descend into chaos quite quickly. They might wait until cash has completely gone out of circulation before they do this in order to achieve maximum effect.
Centralised digital banking is a security risk that will one day be exploited.
