i should write about computing as practice at some point...
i think it's something people should probably do more: for certain categories of things like dotfile managers, the task is sufficiently simple that the reasonable advice is to write ten lines of code. but i think there's a bigger range of things for which this is the case.

@nprofile…vklh @nprofile…cds8 i guess? but Tailscale is always on and from the perspective of the programs using it, it's zero configuration; obviously not so from the perspective of the system as a whole. but nor is mTLS. mTLS is theoretically pretty good in this regard because you can shove a client cert into a system certificate store and even many CLIs work (insert many asterisks here), unless you're on Linux in which case those don't exist.
so the amount of frustration you have to deal with to build on top of it as a platform at least on the client side is, with my experience with very limited dealing with mTLS and its utterly inconsistent implementation between applications (*cough* postgres), vastly greater compared to Tailscale.
it's approximately the same reason i wrote Clipper: i don't want to deal with applications' bespoke tls certificate or proxy configurations, i just want the keys in a uniform manner so i can just read the traffic. same with Tailscale: it just works and you don't have to worry about bespoke app configuration.

@nprofile…7dgh FASCINATING. i love hearing about people's workflows, especially if they managed to combine together the right advanced features to get what they want (and what they want is a creative use of the tool).
i think originally i used symlinks (and my own bad script) because i didn't like the aesthetics of any of the dotfiles managers which copy the structure of the home directory and didn't want to learn yet another thing. these days, in principle, I've become an advanced enough git user that i could have adopted your workflow but i still have incompatible opinions about the layout that lead to using symlinks.
you could definitely write a blog post about this invention.

@nprofile…7dgh there's a horrible solution to this actually. you can put * in gitignore and then !foo for each thing you actually want. i know people who do this weird git pattern and different people who put their home directory directly in git.
i don't personally think the latter is great because i don't like the home directory layout and think it's poor code organization. also it will make it pretty easy to do weird tooling mistakes with things that expect a parent repo. but it is technically possible!

or python -m http.server which is in the default install of many systems but can be crashed by clients disconnecting at the wrong time.
i do wish operating systems did this better but linuxes generally don't have gui configuration for this type of service and the commercial ones are kinda a lost cause. apple's attitude is "why don't you just use airdrop because you only own Apple devices right".

@nprofile…6m2n The makefile is supposed to use some other assignment operator in that case, I think += possibly? It's supposed to be the case that you can add your own flags, but it's never quite ideal especially with crusty makefiles, so sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
In fact what it's ideally supposed to do is call pkg-config --cflags somedep and automatically resolve it from the .pc file shipped by the package (PKG_CONFIG_PATH to override those). Alas.
For this regrettable reason of bad build systems, nixpkgs chooses to replace the c compiler with its own little bad shell script, cc-wrapper, which is what processes those NIX_CFLAGS_COMPILE things and injects them into the actual compiler args. This is usually really confusing but at least if it fucks up you actually have a much nicer time than a normal compiler because you can NIX_DEBUG=4 (6? i forget what the just spammy enough one is) or so and get the compiler args dumped right out to stderr without putting up any fights.

@nprofile…6m2n For what it's worth, LD_LIBRARY_PATH problems are usually caused by projects misunderstanding the dynamic loader and screwing up something like omitting soname (-install_name on macOS) or otherwise having wrong rpath. Rust currently doesn't do this well with --crate-type=dylib, though that's admittedly rarely used.
I should write my own post about this stuff, how to use otool -L, install_name_tool, and similar to fix these rpath related load problems. Then maybe I can stop accidentally becoming the macOS domain expert 🙃.
Recently after several years of refusing to engage with autotools because of distaste for it (as an occasional begrudging C/C++ developer/packager) I finally spent 20 minutes reading the intro section to the autotools manual and found it really valuable in understanding how the project thinks about itself and *why* it's the way it is. @nprofile…6m2n CPPFLAGS is for the preprocessor, though I guess it's strictly correct to use instead of CFLAGS for -I in particular! I just think it might be confusing to refer to CPPFLAGS rather than the more common CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS.
I think one confusing binary toolchain thing that got me when I first learned is that I didn't understand that cc was both the c compiler *and* the linker depending on args, and that often tooling would be really confusing about what it actually is calling when it is "calling the linker" (-fuse-ld referring to an actual linker) *because* a lot of the time, including with rust, "calling the linker" means "calling the compiler driver in link mode".

i wish that YouTube had a parental controls category for Linux distro content (and wide market programming content, the "c++ is so much better" stuff) that is on by default.
no seriously. it rots the brain and creates a factional mindset and leads people to think that the point of it is having the Cool things without an actual use case, rather than being a tool to get things done. the part that should be cool is how it helps people using it to create things they're proud of.
i don't care what editor you use. i don't care what distro you use. it doesn't matter as long as it's helping you achieve your goals. i can have frustrations with the systemic social effects of some things (Microsoft monopolizing language servers or whatever) but that's not on the people using it! i can think that a distro does many things poorly without it being a value judgement on anyone using it.
i should not be able to notice that someone watches this stuff by talking to them and noticing their attitudes; the contempt culture and machoism in all of it has such nasty externalities to people who work on or use the subjects of it. we shouldn't teach new people like this!

@nprofile…6m2n i have some truly heinous contrast bugs with solarized dark and diff tools like nix-diff. idk what the fix is besides moving the offending colour far away from what it currently is on a case by case basis and doing a lot of "hoping". i think the way it's bonus fun is that i use nvim with termguicolors and just the default terminal theme and the problem colours might be getting passed through or something (though I'm not confident, i need to stare at it properly).
to some extent the problem is that the tools in the terminal don't have any idea whether the primary colour has acceptable contrast with any "red"/"yellow"/etc.

it turns out that pee is really useful! you can `pee cat logger` to log stuff to both syslog and the standard output, if you want to diagnose something going awry without being able to see the output directly (but don't want to suppress its normal destination)

packages.x86_64-linux.nixosConfigurations.meow is, in fact, a flake attribute that works with nixos-rebuild
this is actually quite useful for microvms and similar where you are building a config that doesn't actually care about any particular hardware.

i think i am getting Stockholm syndrome'd by c++ too. it's an objectively terrible programming language but it also has features and you can in principle implement anything in it.
the bit where i really have cursed feelings is when i yearn for c++ while writing go, the one language i deal with regularly that *intentionally* dislikes you
but also good grief, the couple of use after free bugs i just fixed were so silly. ugh. silent reference semantics are a billion dollar per year design mistake

it seems that #opentelemetry will continue to ship a default configuration that does not work if anyone who doesn't think about otel (read: the average OSS developer; the average customer) runs your software, and this is by design.
i am speechless. my systems will continue to deliberately violate the spec in this respect and only use otel if there's a collector endpoint explicitly configured.
