Was out looking for a table, and instead came across... this. It is a row of... display shelves? Cat trees? Torture devices? Made out of... huge hunks of wooden roots of some kind?
I'm assuming this is from SE Asia somewhere, but have no idea as to the kind of wood, just wondering why someone would ship it that far. I mean. I was afraid to get to close to them. One had a *sold* tag on it.

My Yoshino #cherry is doing that sad, Washington Tidal Basin thing, where it is believing the past week+ of warm weather and is now getting ready to open blossoms, while later this week we will have another freeze.
It's such a pretty tree when it gets the chance to actually bloom.

Today's Monday question for those in the northern hemisphere is:
How cold is the water coming out of your tap?
Mine is 42F or 5.5C.
This is the cold tap in our bath, which is over top of a large, unheated crawlspace, and my biggest frozen pipe worry when it gets seriously cold.
It would take almost a full minute of running the hot water to get, you know, hot water, so I never do at the sink.
This time of year it's bracing.

I am not very observant, clearly, but this is the absolute first 'bike stop light' I have ever seen. This is at an intersection in Hendersonville, NC just before one gets to the first section of their new rails-to-trails greenway.
There were no bikes this day, but as it gets above freezing that will doubtless change.

We did go up to Woodfin, NC to our fav spot #HighFiveCoffee for a chai in the snow, first time ever for us. Happily it was actually much warmer than it has been the last 3 times we've visited.

Today the sun has found us again in #Asheville, and it is helping do some of the melting without it ever getting warm. Currently 22F but the macadam is clear and dry after the 2nd shoveling this morning. Low of 5F tonight, and more winds.

The area at large? I believe there are shelters open, but no one could travel these roads.
Us personally? We have a gas fireplace, so would have some heat. Food lasts about 8 hours with a battery on the fridge, freezer about as long, both so long as one doesn't open the door.
We've stockpiled water, after the Helene experience. So would be ok for several days, so long as our pipes don't freeze.

A slight coating of ice here west of #Asheville tonight, but we have power and the house is very warm (!) in preparation for perhaps losing electricity tonight or tomorrow.
Light freezing rain continues to fall, and is forecast to continue overnight. It is 24F but the precip is coming down as liquid and freezing on contact with anything.

Someone here on Masto posted about making anti-ICE whistle packs, and that seemed like something good to do. Got my supplies, and have 40 made, half folded to read in English, and half in Spanish.
I hope to be able to find ways to distribute them next week, after the other kind of ice storm here abates.

A paved greenway that's a bit over 3 miles long made a nice morning walk in the cold today. Not much to see, but right next to Mud Creek which looked a lot worse in February due to Helene, but has had a great deal of improvement since.
Saw only 2 other guys, each with dogs. Cold!

We went for a walk on the Oklawaha Greenway in Hendersonville, NC early this morning, beginning and ending at Jackson Recreational Park (huge, fields, etc.)
Thought I'd get some good pics, but honestly the sunrise on the way there was better than anything else. All from a moving car, and not very good photos, but it was a beautiful sight.

Wondering what people in the Northern Hemisphere are dealing with humidity-wise, indoors.
We heat, and don't humidify, and currently the humidity has dropped to 32% (and falling.) The bathroom sensor read an unbelievable 17% this morning.
I just can't bring myself to add humidity, but dang are eyes, nose, throat and skin pretty unhappy these days. Rising temps will change it this week, I imagine.
Curious what folks are comfortable with.

This is a great idea!
Also, for the last few years I've been getting the Toblerone 6 packs from Costco, and given one candy bar out to everyone who comes to the house during the holidays - postal people, trash folks, HVAC repair, delivery people of all kinds. It always gets a smile and a happy response.
It's been such a success that all of 2025 I've been handing out smallish Hershey bars, too. But now I'm back to the Toblerones!

My only picture of a barred owl, lol.
We heard them often (who cooks for you?!) but this evening one landed on top of the peak of the garage as we were returning from a walk.
We'd seen the pair around quite a bit that week, and I had to look up online o realize the larger one was the female. Never saw them again.

As with so many others recently, today is my 3rd year anniversary on Mastodon here in the Fediverse, and I’m so glad to be here. I spent 13 years on Twitter, finding much of it useful in the early times, and a total hell towards the end. Not sorry to see the end of it.
Took a while to find a community here, but feel fortunate now to have found a great server, and so many interesting people, engaged and sharing their passions. There is never a day here that I don’t get to learn something, see something amazing, or talk to a friend (frequently all 3 at once.)

#HCA has incredible earnings even while our #Mission healthcare system remains in "immediate jeopardy" by CMS. The parent co is doing great, if only they didn't have to pretend to care for all those pesky patients...

The blue hour tonight is snow-capped. And yes, my neighbor DOES have their Xmas lights up and on.
Temperatures are 22F "and falling" (in Trillian's voice for those of you old enough to recognize that.)

Another wander around the RAD in #Asheville this week, brought us to the RiverLink building and its upstairs gallery.
The height of the 2 worst floods was stenciled on the brick of the entrance, which is mind-blowing, when one sees how far away and far above the river this building actually is. Inside, they had 2 photos at the worst of the flooding September 2024 during #Helene. #Flood

One of my ways to push back against all of this (waves hands) is to support as many excellent newsletters as I can, but now feel completely overwhelmed every morning when they come rolling in.
Still a good idea, but seriously doing my head in. Have to find more inner resources I guess.

Wondering if there are other #SlowHorses fans out there, and whether they have also found #DownCemetaryRoad which is Mick Herron's first novel, now made into a series as well on Apple TV+?
Watched the first episode tonight and it's great, as expected with this cast. I've now read everything Herron has written and am bereft!
