one of the biggest problems I find in explaining this technology is just how ludicrous the actual explanations are. People will admit they don’t know how it works, and then refuse to accept the explanation because of how ridiculous it all sounds 😵‍💫 🤡

Some reporting here:

Today I saw elevated activity on a client's server... Checked the logs, getting hammered by AmazonProductDiscoveryBot... cool, cool.
Turns out, Amazon will, in some cases, list companies on their marketplace automatically, without consent, via information gathered using this bot.
In other words - they'll try to automatically become a middleman between you and your customers.
How the fuck is this even legal?

*almost* doing a lot of heavy lifting here. I can sympathize, especially since many open source alternatives have embraced the slop machines.
But I really can’t get past the moral bankruptcy of *how* the “bespoke solution” was made.

Apparently IMDB is owned by Amazon?
Not sure when that happened but just now I visited IMDB on my phone, and was briefly redirected to Amazon.
That’s weird, I thought.
Only to find an email in my inbox. An IMDB account was *automatically created without my consent* simply because I happened to be signed in to Amazon.
Are you fucking kidding me with this shit? 😤
Account already deleted – well, my “request for deletion is confirmed”.
I hate this timeline.

In a purposely twisted way, you could say his policy change forced the release of previously private information.
But this is obviously a case of state law. For "doxxing” you'd have to prove the policy change was made *for the purpose of exposing that information*. Good luck with that.

FWIW the entirety of the "AI" features (at the moment) are a single sub-menu item when you right click on a file.
I can't find any other mention of “AI” anywhere in the app so of all the implementations it's at least not obnoxious (for now).

If you self-host yes. It is readily self hostable on PikaPods, but not the SeaFile Plus stuff (which, I want for Wikis).
I also don't love the AI shit but, it’s infected every decent option that current fits my needs so, here I am.

Successfully set up a docker container behind an nginx reverse proxy... but my container is erased each time I start it (using a compose file, if that makes a difference).
This is after following explicit instructions on how to do this.
This is par for the course with docker in my experience. Follow explicit instructions that "just work" and... it doesn't quite work.
What assumed knowledge am I missing??

it’s hard to believe the “kill switch” will actually do what it says. We’ve been told time and time again “AI” will be “opt-in” just to have the features repeatedly turned back on after users have disabled them.
Why is this *any* different?

Any flavor of Ubuntu (I setup Kubuntu because I like KDE Plasma) is pretty much in “it just works” territory, at least in Linux land.
The installer can help you setup dual booting, so you can choose Linux or Windows at boot time, if that would work instead of a VM. Can’t speak to running Windows VMs on Linux personally.

VSCode continues to shove MCP / Chat / "AI” nonsense into it with every update so I'm once again revisiting text editors…
There are 3 key things I couldn't give up or find a comfortable workaround for last time I went on this journey (6 months ago):
* Quickly alphabetizing lines of code (I do this in CSS all the time)
* A good "Find in project” experience - I'm too used to VSCode's search experience
* An integrated terminal I can put at the bottom of the window

good question... I assume it would always show them since it’s not a touch input device.
I'm pretty sure the Magic Mouse doesn't default to “always show scrollbars" because scrolling happens on a touch surface, even though its more like a traditional mouse.
But a mouse with no reported scroll capabilities… my guess is it would show the scrollbars (if a mouse that old even still works with macOS?)

2025-05-16 15:42:32 UTC

Yes - the default behavior is “always show scrollbars if the input device has a scroll wheel, otherwise hide them until scrolling”

I left a rather straightforward comment on that exact matter. I get they can’t list everything, but I’d argue CSS is far more common than a lot of choices on the list. An omission so glaring it’s hard not to read it as intentional given the “debate”.

If you answered 7, congratulations, you win!
Literally, the layout is a grid, the row has some header text and 4 images. Each image is nested 7 divs deep.

Editing a Squarespace website today and I have to say... The Squarespace editor is a fucking disaster of a product.
Holy shit.
Want to add a custom css class to a page element? You can’t.
Want to write custom CSS? Surprise, it’s actually LESS so things like calc() require special syntax.
Want to download an asset from the asset manager? You can’t. Want to replace an asset with an updated version? You can’t.
And don't even get me started on the fucking markup.
