I don’t earn any money from writing on my blog, despite it taking significant time and energy. But it still feels like the right thing to do.
- I write to save others the trouble I’ve been through.
- I write to structure my thought and self-review my work from a different perspective.
- I write as a social activity, to get something others can criticize and help me improve.
- I write because that’s how we humans share ideas.
I write to connect with others.

I wrote this post about welcoming feedback a little while ago. Most of it still stands, but I have come to a realization.
Friction is a friend, not an enemy.
I do welcome feedback about my posts. I even actively look for it before publishing.
But not all feedback is equal. A snarky comment on reddit can be cheap and demoralizing. A thoughtful email can bring me a new perspective.
Friction to comment is actually a good thing.

The more I look at the geopolitical situation, the more I think the cheapest, most robust and realistic option for Europe to reclaim its digital independence is to massively support @npub1vnu…8mqn and its upstreams.
No need to mine or buy rare earths, tons of jobs created along the way, countless devices saved from the landfill where they would have poisoned the soil, and even the possibility to monetize other countries’ waste.
It’s just what makes the most sense.

FOSDEM is over, and I’m feeling grateful again for the incredible FOSS and Matrix communities.
🍕60 pizzas and an uncountable amount of drinks at the Fringe event
👕 100 t-shirts sold on the first day!!
🧑‍🏫 A completely packed devroom
🤝 Many great conversations at the booth
That, many photos and videos to process, and a wrap-up post to write.
I’m leaving FOSDEM with a sense that we are doing the right thing, going in the right direction, and that people notice 💪

I think I've never posted it, but I have assembled a small but mighty A/V kit that I'll bring to the Matrix FOSDEM Fringe event (that's on Friday 31, 13:00 CET at HSBXL!)
It's a ZV-E10 camera + 2 lenses, a pair of extra batteries, a pair of microphones, and a gray card.
Very compact but extremely useful to keep decent quality recordings of talks and to take portraits!

Palms were offline devices that only synced with your computer when put on a docking station.
You could read and reply to emails offline, book or cancel meetings, and sync with your computer later. The latest versions allowed you to snap pictures and listen to your music.
No servers running constantly. No data spilled everywhere. Days worth of battery on a single charge.
The future stole our cables, and it took our attention span and our privacy with it.

I’m a happy Toot! user and pondering whether I should buy an Ivory subscription.

I'm all for a Linux phone and I'm extremely worried about the state of corporate (and governmental) surveillance we're forced to live in.
But I can't trust manufacturers who focus on hardware, don't pick a software ecosystem to focus their efforts on, and don't contribute meaningfully to said ecosystem.
Software alone is a HUGE budget to get a successful phone.
Relying on volunteers won't cut it.

This is definitely a first world problem but my 32” monitor is too large to be comfortable.
I end up getting messy windows all over the place instead of having apps full screen.
What size and resolution combo do people recommend these days? I’d like to avoid fractional scaling.

Obsidian and Astro's Content Collections are a match made in heaven.
It's entirely possible to maintain your content in obsidian, and to drag it to a specific folder of your Astro website to publish it.
Astro will even check the metadata consistency in the frontmatter and enforce it!
