If they’ve finally integrated LLMs with linting and type checking and so on and so on I could see there being less slop at the word-by-word level… which still leaves lots of room for more subtle forms of slop at the method, subsystem, and interaction (e.g. not writing security vulnerabilities) levels!

Also i dunno but it’s just really hard for me to be interested in trying the fancy expensive, high-investment versions of the tools when the free versions are all unfit for purpose. Like not just bad but wrong. There’s a bare minimum of purpose alignment that something has to meet for me to consider investing more deeply in it and ALL of the free stuff I encounter is so unfit as to be actively offensive

This was basically my problem with The Grey Man, such that I turned it off half an hour in, despite loving Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. It had these characters getting into a fight not because of who they were or what they wanted but because there was a line on the outline that said “second act conflict goes here”

What I’m taking from this is that software engineers spend most of our time on engineering software, and writing code is (as expected) a relatively small portion of that work.
Imagine this for other engineering disciplines. “Wow structural engineers seem to spend most of their time on meetings and CAD and relatively little time physically building bridges with their hands! This is something AI can and should fix. I am very smart”

Like seriously I spent way too long doing this, thinking I was doing it "right" and it should sound good, before the evidence of my senses, listening to the recordings, and my vocal instructors' repeated feedback, eventually caught up with me and forced me to painfully acknowledge that I was wrong.

And my first and most concrete suggestion, which it took me a ... lot of pain ... to really internalize, doing vocal stuff growing up, is:
If you're going for that big, deep, resonant announcer-style voice, and it sounds good to you inside your head but not on tape, you are probably focusing the sound inside your head. Focus the sound right behind your front teeth and you'll hear a marked difference in the quality of the recording.

the Wayback Machine is pretty obviously a transformative use under fair use, and even the original controlled digital lending program should have been not transformative but still fair use. Removing the restrictions and going full pirate library was pretty obviously not transformative and not fair use and the courts rightly found against it
