As much as I agree that Europe needs to break the power of Big Tech, Durov actually has a point.
Mandatory age checks will be the end of the open web.
“But the children…” is always the rhetorical device of choice to justify more surveillance. Meanwhile a pedo ring rules the world, with plaintext emails, without facing consequences.
If the EU is serious about confronting Big Tech, it should abolish anti-circumvention laws, as @npub1fdr…lvhs argues. Invest in open source, instead of wiring massive sums to Microsoft every month. And tax billionaires out of existence forchrissake.

That argument would perhaps make sense in a world, where the US homicide rate was not a multiple of the EU rate.
As it is, it's more like "I'd rather not be stabbed in the EU, than being shot in the US".

Some people just don't get it. Pays us a visit, fresh in from a group trip where everybody came down with Covid. No, you're not safe five days after getting infected; you're safe five days after you've recovered.
I ask her to stay outside, or wear a mask. She comes in, closes the door, says "it's good you set clear boundaries", and coughs. All before the mask is even unpacked.
Nobody seems to understand why I'm livid. It's not about performing mask theatre to soothe my feelings FFS. It's about actually taking responsibility to not be a vector.
I'm taking care of a vulnerable friend, who in all probability will literally die within a week if the virus manages to reach him.

Economics is a bullshit science.
Nothing better illustrates the utter mindboggling craziness of neoclassical economics, than its Nobel laureate in environmental economics.
If you look closely at the criticism leveled at #limitstogrowth, you realize the profession of #economics is a naked emperor.

What I’m seeing in this new report, is that respondents don’t support dictatorship if you ask them directly in those terms, or if you lay out the full implications. What worries me, is that we may have a large cohort of people that don’t necessarily see the full implications for themselves, when leaning towards “strong leaders”.
The many reported anecdotes of “I did not vote for that” regret in Trump voters showing evidence for this kind of …. I should use a polite word. But it’s a form of stupidity, sorry. You lean towards authoritarian leaders, you invite fascism, it’s plain and simple. It’s a pity, reading history has gone out of fashion.
