FreeBSD 15 has silently been released.
Expect the announcement and site update, once most of the mirrors have synced.

When you first install Windows 10 or Windows 11, when Windows ask where you are — Always claim you're in Iceland.
Why?
You will be given more options, including the option to uninstall both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge.

I've been trying to avoid needing a larger hard drive, but I think I am failing in that regard.
The problem is, most large capacity drives, while still being reasonably priced at the moment, are still mechanical drives. SSD drives (particularly SATA) still balloon in price if you're looking for something over 2 TB.
I'm someone who has a list of things he doesn't like paying much for, and hard drives are one of those things. lol

No one working for Meta is going to prove that they work for Meta.
Anyone who has fallowed me knows that I speak the truth because I say things before it's known to the rest of the world. That speaks for itself.
You should give nobody your personal information. A Meta employee cannot help you, even if they want to — and we do not (want to help you).

I never liked flakes — I prefer the one file that rules them all. I found it a lot easier to manage (flake-less). Additionally, I did not want to lock any versions, and wanted to continue to receive regular updates.
However, with automatic updates enabled, things would fail silently in the background. And that meant noticing over time that NixOS was not generating new snapshots (because the update had silently failed). And the reason I kept failing was because NixOS kept changing phrases in their coding language.

You cannot block Meta's AI without blocking every Firefox user.
Meta, knowing full well that there is a conscious and deliberate effort to block artificial intelligence. Decided to teach their AI to use Firefox and loaded up a bunch of thin micro virtual machines.
It is not just a user string that people need to worry about. And most people aren't going to block the other popular browser on the internet. That is what Mata is counting on.

NixOS uses its own programming language. They are the source of themselves. If they wanted the setting to change a command to read eat-me=true; to load Wayland, it would be.
The reason is them. They are the reason.

I am proud of myself for having stayed with NixOS for nearly a year.
If they ever stop renaming every setting and command in their configuration file — it would make for a long term sustainable distro.
But until then, it's just annoying. Impressive, but annoying.
The whole point and strength of NixOS is that one file controls everything, and it should be easy to manage. But because they keep changing the name of everything, all the time, for no reason, it's pointless.

NixOS should be the that super cool operating system, with one master configuration file to rule them all. — Really easy once you learn it.
But NixOS likes to change things for no reason other than to change things. It gets really annoying really fast.
By that, I mean they love to rename their commands all the time. 🙄
example=true; will become 1example=true only to later be renamed example1=true; and eventually renamed to 1_example=true; and then example_1=true; —— And this cycle appears to be continuous, for nearly everything, for no apparent reason.
Change for the sake of change because somebody in their development team is completely sadistic, and just wants to say, see, we're doing something, is infuriating. 🤦

* sigh *
I need VirtualBox because for some classic gaming, virt-manager was not the best option for Windows XP or Windows Vista. It worked fair with Windows 7, but even when I finally could get the audio and network working, the display was lacking any reasonable hardware acceleration.
VirtualBox just works, and I don't want a debug or tweak another random setting, I just want things to work — and I mean now.
The problem is, I really wanted to use an immutable distro, because I love the idea of my daily driver being safe and secure. And while I used to be able to run VirtualBox on Fedora Kinoite (Silverblue but with KDE), it seems things have e changed.
That brings me back to NixOS, which I have gotten really good at using — while wanting to throw it out the window. Because when you become really good with NixOS, you learn that they change things constantly just for the sake of changing things. And that becomes super annoying really quick.

As I said, I am not a fan of a fork, that is forked from a fork, of another fork or more. At some point, you're just asking for trouble, and you're better off not following the upstream, of someone else's upstream, who is relying upon someone else or more.
The phrase there are too many cooks in the kitchen, applies. And truth be told, an operating system starts with many cooks to begin with. Recooking someone's leftovers, of someone else's leftovers, and possibly someone else's before that, or more, just makes a very messy kitchen, and often not quality food. It's often better to start your own dish. And while it's perfectly fine to be inspired by somebody else's. Burnt leftovers are still burnt leftovers, no matter how you dress it.

2025-11-21 05:18:30 UTC

I often recommend people avoid overly forked operating systems that rely on upstream.
It's not that I am against forking — rather, what is all too common is that a development ends up with far too many middlemen and a compounded supply chain. And we are talking about an operating system, which likely already has a lot of middlemen and an extensive dependency chain.
This is why I often recommend Linux distributions that are original and independent, for example, Fedora or NixOS. These are not forks — these are what others use to make forks. Debian is another example. To make Ubuntu, they fork Debian and build up from there.
But Ubuntu may encounter issues inherent within Debian, or it may introduce its own mistakes, or a combination of the two. It's a good OS, but that is the reality. Then along comes someone who decides to fork Ubuntu. Now you've got to worry about Debian, Ubuntu, their fork, and any combination of those three, plus their own issues.

Everyone always assumes you need to big or go home, but in business you should start small. Cloudflare, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and others did not come swinging right out the gate. Meaning, they started small and grew overtime. A Cloudflare alternative could do the same and still be just as valuable.

2025-11-18 17:13:57 UTC

I believe an alternative to Clouflare would make a very successful business model. However, competing against a well-branded de facto monopoly is no easy feat.

2025-11-18 15:30:39 UTC

You will find no news reports about this.
Cloudflare is offline because the United States government is adding their own little spin into Cloudflare. The great firewall of the United States Government is soon at hand.
Later today, Cloudflare will release a statement. It will say that there were network migration issues and other general issues. That their entire infrastructure was somehow affected. Do not believe it.
I warned everybody about this almost a year ago. I've been trying to find an alternative. I know of no alternative to Cloudflare.

The problem about Mastodon isn't just that they're supporting scammers. It's that they broke their own rules to target me. Online harassment should be discouraged, and yet the post to harass me was trending on Mastodon.social.
The other issue is Mastodon have become Elon Musk. It's one thing if you don't like what I say, and you block me. That's fine. I can live with that. I block people too sometimes. I'm perfectly okay with people blocking me. But it's another thing if you decide to prevent 20,000 people seeing somebody that you personally don't like, who is not sharing hate speech, spam, misinformation, or anything that would legitimately warrant such an action. That makes them no better than Elon Musk on Twitter.

2025-11-11 21:32:32 UTC

You reap what you sow.
Mastodon reached out and asked me why my regular contribution was lacking (missing), and if it was an oversight or issue. It was significant. Not enough to make or break them, but enough for someone to reach out. Imagine their surprise when they realized who I was.
It changes nothing, but it was still funny. 🤷 😂

2025-11-11 21:22:04 UTC

Say it with me, semantic name changes are pointless. Say it again, semantic name changes are pointless.
NixOS love is the play with semantics. It is infuriating.
Your configuration file will be perfectly working, and the next update, something silently, breaks in the background, because they changed some stupid naming scheme.
run_example1 will be renamed run_1example, only to reverted back to run_example1, and then just to be different that will later be called example1_run
Changing the name scheme just to say look we're doing something is not beneficial and is just infuriating.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but…
You matter.
Not just now, but always — you always have, and you always will — matter.
Everyone is just trying to make it in this world, and for better or worse, we’re all just people. Just people.
Your job, your title, your social status, your place in this world may change, but you will always be a person who matters. We all matter.
The lie some would have you believe is that some people matter more than others. But the truth is, we all add up — and so we all matter.

Since we are now using A.I. to better improve and optimize A.I. I suspect the cost of A.I. may also be brought down in time.

These companies are making money by selling the user data, language models, and other generated models that are being generated. They see it, for now, as a long-term investment, with a current loss. Both your personal computer and the internet, as you know it today, started with a negative loss in the beginning. 😉

RE: https://burningboard.net/@Tempest/115476504372882772
A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) is another example.
All these corporations are integrating A.I. while the vocal minority insists that no one wants it, no one uses it, and that we should get rid of it. But corporations aren’t mindlessly wasting money on A.I. for nothing. It’s being added because many people either use it or tolerate it — and ultimately, it’s profitable.
So long as the majority endures in silence, A.I. is going nowhere — except onto every device in your home and into every mainstream app.
The only way to avoid it is to prove that it isn’t profitable. That means refusing to use it and choosing something else. But people are no longer willing to sacrifice for their convictions.
