With the fixes made in the last #phosh release and those in flight for 0.43 regarding on screen keyboard, text input, text completion and copy/paste together with small app fixes here and there I'm really starting to enjoy text input on mobile and grab the phone more often although the laptop is nearby.
I consider that a good sign 😃

By popular demand #phosh-osk-stub now also allows to add plain `alt` and `ctrl` to the terminals shortcuts bar. This makes usage with complex key combos easier (I'm looking at you #emacs):

The OSK panel in mobile settings is becoming more complete. After adding layout selection last cycle, selecting the default text completer is on its way now too. The data is provided by the OSK so new completers are picked up automatically.

Look at the GPU / Waydroid interaction. Looks like a something is off there. Maybe a wrong format specifier but could also be outdated mesa in the image)? Could very much be device dependent. Maybe someone can confirm it doesn't happen on e.g. L5 of PP ? (or maybe it does which would also tell us something).
(you can likely take phosh/phoc out of the equation here (e.g. by checking with Weston)).

Another small detail: I often need to scroll up in #chatty to reread something when composing a msg. Going back to the last msg of the conversation by taping the 🔵 would close the ⌨️ forcing me touch into the text area again (and causing visual distraction). We can fix this by having the 🔵 not take focus.
Posting this to demo it can be a one line change in a UI file to make #LinuxMobile work better. So please get involved! #Gtk 's GtkInspector is great to figure such things out.

Today was "Bundesweiter Warntag" in Germany so a good point in time to test #ModemManager's & #phosh's upcoming #cellbroadcast support 🚨 .
The sounds emitted by #feedbackd are only stubs (and you don' t hear the haptic in the video but I promise it's there 😃).
There's three messages because the CBMs are sent out on three different channels.

And here's what we could do for copy. Put that into an extra MR for now so we can check whether it's predictive enough for the user what is being copied (while the paste bits from above can already land for 0.42).
Note that this is orthogonal to what an app/UI toolkit offers for copy/paste (via context menus or drag handles) already.

One thing that bugged me is that we had no way in #phosh to present only the available OSK layouts to the user to pick from. This led to confusion as users configured a layout which then would not be available later on. phosh-osk-stub can now provide that information to mobile settings (and it will be simple to add support for e.g. squeekboard if it dumps out the relevant information).
Thanks to #libadwaita and #GTK4's list models such things are fun to add.

We're following the discussions. Phosh has a recommended (codified) set of apps/services we ship by default and we preferably develop for / contribute to. That is unlikely to change based on a poll. It can change based on good arguments so I hope to learn some of those during the ongoing discussions (and also learn about gaps that people are currently bridging with workarounds or that we missed completely so far).

Yup, better not do that (`dpkg --force-depends` would work to remove system chatty temporarily but it'll get pulled back in on updates).
Another option is to move away /etc/xdg/autostart/sm.puri.Chatty-daemon.desktop when running the flatpak (which AFAIK does not get autostarted on boot so you might not get new SMS).
Chatty is tightly integrated into the system on phones, I think the flatpak is currently more of a demo for systems where it's not running yet.

It took us a long time to make Linux work on PC, servers and laptops either but it grows device by device and if you include the Halium based devices there's quiet a few already. It will just be the new normal at some point.

I would even uninstall the system chatty as otherwise two processes try to take SMS out of the Modem. (and after uninstalling make sure there's no process running).

Nice initiative and focusing on one distro and UI makes sense (and happy to see #phosh made it in 🙂 ).
At FrOSCon (https://programm.froscon.org/2024/events/3178.html) however we saw (again) that lots of issues affecting
daily drivability for users are device specific (modem data and call stability, gps availability, sensor support, camera sensor support). I thus wonder if the scope is still too broad and one should look at "per device" funds as well?

Regarding fractal: Fractal could set the `im.received` category on the notifications (this is supported by glib via https://docs.gtk.org/gio/method.Notification.set_category.html) so you'd get feedback
Regarding suspend: A good way to keep the device from suspending is the caffeine quick setting toggle. Toggling this on prevents suspend, toggling it off allows the device to suspend (e.g. at night). So one can save battery over longer non-use periods easily.

I'd say it's not about trust but necessity. The final decision which code lands on devices shipped by Purism by default can only be done by Purism - so it won't pan out without collaboration. I guess we want to see at least the bandwidth to continue kernel maintenance plus the bandwidth to review and merge contributions spent there.
(People who don't want to run the default OS have lots of alternatives already).

No worries. If you look into the related MRs you'll already see mentions about future widgetry that will improve on this (or just wait until it materializes 😃).
It's as so often in sw development: cut the problem into parts that can progress independently (here: the actual status pages and their content (bluetooth, wifi, …) and the quick settings widgetry.
We could have waited until everything is ready but opted to get the ready parts out to easy some workflows.
