It will be interesting.
They are deliberately minimizing the difficulty of this mission as much as possible so as to be able to claim a success. The flight will only be 65 minutes, assuming all goes well. It will not complete an orbit. It is just attempting to do what previous launches have done, albeit with a significantly redesigned spaceship.
Still 33 brand new Raptor 3 engines creates an awful lot of opportunity for something to go wrong.

Had a discussion here yesterday which sounded reasonable, until it became clear that half the points the other person was making were just wrong, and realized they were getting it all from asking an LLM for responses.
Turned out they had no knowledge of the subject at all and were confidently arguing nonsense.
All this strange sounding falsity is now being exchanged everywhere, all the time. It's so sad. We are raising a generation of nitwits.

Other resources like Cruchbase (https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/bluesky-514d) and Cbinsights (https://www.cbinsights.com/company/bluesky-8/financials) don't include a Series B round and have total invested capital at $23M ($8M seed and $15M series A).
A Business Insider article on January 7, 2025 reports Bluesky was close to closing another round lead by Bain Capital (https://www.businessinsider.com/x-competitor-bluesky-valuation-new-funding-round-2025-1?op=1), but there was never any follow up.
So how much money has been invested in Bluesky, and by whom?
It remains a mystery.

The curious mystery of the Bluesky Series B funding round.
Did it happen?
If you look at pitchbook (https://pitchbook.com/profiles/company/484831-81) it seems Bluesky closed a whopping $97 million funding round resulting in a $700M valuation in January 2025. VCpedia lists Greylock, alumni ventures and Skyseed as participants (https://vcpedia.com/rounds/5195).
The interesting thing is there are no press releases or other media coverage confirming this financing.

Younger family member who works for a big tech company is here for the holidays. He is working everyday finishing up writing end of year peer review evaluations. Apparently everyone at the company has to generate 30+ extensive evaluations of their coworkers. This is done using a special version of ChatGPT which cranks our long beautifully worded reviews based on a few prompts. These then go to the respective managers who use ChatGPT to summarize the results for each employee. Seriously 🤦‍♂️

This is an excellent point. The type of "decentralized" future Bluesky imagines is very different from what we have here in the Fediverse. To state it simply, Bluesky is not pitching a thousand points of light. Their network protocol does not scale "wide" (many instances) efficiently. Instead they talk about "credible exit", which while it has not been realized at all, comprises a handful of other big enterprises running platforms on AT Proto that you could, in theory, switch to.

Mastodon lost a lot of people, especially Black people, due to harassment here. We need to understand the real technical deficiencies that create vectors for such abuse and get serious about fixing them. In particular, apparently it is possible to use "Followers Only" reply controls and also @ mention someone. These posts are only seen by the followers, and the @ mentioned person. This has been used to harass individuals without it being seen by the general population.

Absolutely not. The distinction has always between decentralized and decentralizable.
Whenever Bluesky says they are decentralized they actually mean they are potentially decentralizable. It's the difference between future potential and current reality. It is always more attractive to sell unrealized futures.
Whenever called out on their vaporware marketing it is always, 'we have this or that technical feature in AT Protocol, so what we are selling is potentially feasible.'

Apparently #Bluesky may have now started to take down accounts in obedience to demands by the Turkish government.
This post on Mastodon Arda Kılıçdağı @npub1lwy…h9la from a few hours ago purports to contain a screenshot of a notice by noreply[at]bsky.social informing a user that their account has been "restricted" because "the legal authority in Turkey" informed them it "violates local laws in Turkey".

Do Bluesky users not care that they are relinquishing all rights to any content they post? Or, do they not understand the difference? Does the science community get that everything, any idea, that is exchanged on the platform is no longer proprietary?
Maybe misunderstanding what "public" means in this context, but it seems like it means it can be freely used by anyone for anything. Seems crazy.

Sure, Mastodon is small in raw numbers, but we are big enough, a proven platform and an engaged community. If you act in concert you can bring a lot of your followers along. Before you know it we could have truly substantial and influential public social media that is not beholden to some billionaires or corporate overlords.
Understand all the reasons it seems like a big step, and it is, but for all of our futures, now is the time to pitch in and help build distributed public social media.

Such a BS hit job today from the New York Times. This rag should be renamed the New York Enquirer.
Seems the Parkinsons expert's visit wasn't to examine Biden, and Biden's doctors have repeatedly stated publicly that Biden has no signs of Parkinsons. But Peter Baker finds some unnamed people who've never examined Biden who say they think Biden might show signs of the condition, and the New York Times pushes out this supermarket tabloid headline.
This is getting absurd.
