One idea: on initialization, clients try to open up websockets to a collection of relays. whichever ones successfully establish a connection are published as a parametrized replaceable event with a fixed Kind "K", with "d" tags equal to the URL of the relay. These events ideally would be "sprayed".
Then, as another user, I could query for kind "K" authored by the user I am interested and get the list of relays, with timestamps, they have connected to. By filtering the query I can get the most recent relays, etc.
Obvious privacy concerns. But a good client could prompt user before sending (i.e., "let people know you were using relay wss://XXX"?), and maybe you could set to not send such updates for certain relays.. etc..

this seems like a pretty big challenge. nostr would presumably just be a signaling layer. feels like the "nostr" aspects are secondary, and the primary challenge is coming up with a decentralized way to host git repos... maybe something to do with torrents? happy to hear anyone's thoughts on this.

I dunno... it's a bit like metamask. You only need to trust nos2x / getAlby browser extension, and not every single nostr web developer. With the native apps (e.g., gossip, damus, etc) you probably need to trust the developer. although one can imagine a future where hardware "wallets" can be used to sign nostr notes.

every note you send should be assumed to be cached by an adversary/state-actors, (maybe ask #[7]).
relays obviously can collect your IP and easily link that to a pubkey.
