@nprofile…mxv0 in other words, your video is a good & valuable reframe, but depending on what business one is in, a certain minimum level of consistency may be required in order to viably self-support in said business. and it's very possible to get stuck in scenarios where that's not possible due to one or another limitation plus having inadequate support, sometimes for many years.
I know too many people on the spectrum who are living some version of this, myself included.

@nprofile…84r4 honestly just the fact we're having this conversation gives me hope, I've been expressing and trying to refine these points on fedi occasionally since about 2018.
the way I use tumblr is a minority faction, but for users who do approach it like this, there's absolutely nothing else to replace it. especially for those who actively poke around finding blogs. over time you can refine your list to your taste so well it hurts. some of that is critical mass of users but a lot is discovery.

1. somebody I follow (or whose blog I'm checking out) reblogged a cool post: I can see (and easily click on) *who they reblogged from* as well as OP. this is huge for discovering less-popular users who mostly just reblog, and for refining one's follow list until there's such chefkiss taste on your dash at 1am Saturday it makes your eyes water
2. finding cool blogs by poking around in / crawling up the reblog chain

@nprofile…84r4 if I were implementing my own tumblr workalike, I'd be satisfied if all the other AP implementations worked with it like they do now, as long as mine did it the classic tumblr way. that'd probably be the minimum bar to shoot for.
I will say that if Wafrn ever came out with tumblr style reblogs, over time it'd likely widen & deepen the Wafrn community and also be a huge boon to fedi overall. reblog curators are a small % of users but they do a LOT to keep people's feeds interesting.

ActivityPub isn't easy to understand, and I have cognitive roadblocks which make it even harder for me personally. so I'm pontificating with incomplete knowledge. anyway that's my fear with this, that there may be no good way to reimplement the tumblr reblog chain on ActivityPub.
which would suck, because IMO it's a crucial enabler of curator and aesthetic tumblr, which is the wing I've spent 15+ years inhabiting 💜

I haven't been able to cram enough understanding of ActivityPub into my brain to have a sense of the possibilities when the goals (in priority order) are 1. fully replicate tumblr reblog UX for users on instances of the tumblr-clone platform, and 2. provide sufficient compatibility with the de facto implementation of Mastodon-style reblogs that users on every other platform software can at least interact, and not be annoyed.

(while I'm on the topic, Matt Mullenweg of Automattic infamy is currently dealing out what I suspect will be the final strangulation of classic tumblr culture which was enabled by emergent properties of how the software worked: recently, "notes" were separated into likes and reblogs, and then about a week ago they rolled out a *massive* and horrible change to how the reblog chain worked, and the reaction was so swift and full of rage they actually rolled it back... for now)

the very first time I used the new meatballs drawer in #Firefox Android, I tapped the quit button instead of the refresh button 👍
my settings have "clear browsing data when quitting" turned on, so in practice I rarely quit unless I want to clear browsing data, so this nuked all my recent history.
maybe if Mozilla wasn't squandering immense resources on AI slop nobody wants, #UXfail like this wouldn't make it to general release.

I think what I'm really saying here is that the GCal reminders UX was perfect out of the box, whereas I need to do multiple rounds of deliberate learning & tweaking to get equivalent utility/behavior out of Tasks.org, and no other solution even comes close to this level of imperfection while also having a self-hostable data store.
which reminds me, I better figure out how to back up my settings, because that doesn't get written to CalDAV...

I'm deep into a bug scrub on the #TasksDotOrg github because I've gone all-in on using it for to-do list management, and having been around this mulberry bush several times now on Android, just let me say:
* holy fuck, building a to-do list app (which can use CalDAV as a back-end no less) is REALLY COMPLICATED

Fedilab's cross-account features can be summed up as being logged into multiple accounts, then you can long-press to fav, bookmark, boost, or reply from a different account than the one you're currently browsing with. I use that a lot because I have several accounts so that nobody has to suffer the full volume of my turboposting in one place.

the user who made that post has tried more desktop apps than I have, and found most of them wanting as I did.
as of my last investigation, Thunderbird and Kalendar had showstopper issues, and a couple web apps I tried didn't do what I needed.
anyway, I have a few tabs open now with some candidates to look into, so maybe I'll figure something out this time around (I've been down this road 2 or 3 times over the past handful of years with no joy on desktop)

on the topic of calendar+task management, one component I'm still missing is a desktop #CalDAV solution which either does both, or is composed of two apps which do #calendaring and #tasksorg tasks.
I believe my Android solution will work for my needs, but it'd be better to be able to update both calendar and tasks from desktop too, especially if I ever lose access to my phone.
the issue is that CalDAV support is rare and CalDAV-with-proper-tasks is rarer.

I think I'm set up for my best try in 6 years at getting back onto something resembling the system I had for situational awareness + keeping up with tasks and correspondence that I had before my move
I gardened and rearranged all my notifications, FINALLY set up a candidate once-and-for-all task tracking solution, added attention grabby elements to help me remember that notifications exist, and optimized my email for being paid attention to.

iOS Mastodon users, I'm looking for suggestions for the fedi Masto app with by far the best UX.
I know almost nothing about what's available (or iOS in general) and need a go-to app to recommend to people who are new to fedi.

@nprofile…d8jm yeah, I quit for the nth time (maybe 4th or 5th over like 15 years, most recent was about 9 years taking low doses) around 3 months ago. tapered a bit, ran out of money for more, then resolved to just get the damn white knuckle phase over with.
it wasn't bad, I was at less than 2tsp a day when I went cold 🦃. acute withdrawal lasted ~4 weeks, now I'm in the extended "notice stuff sucks more often without it" PAWS phase. very mild. a few months and that'll fade.

what's interesting to me is that IME and that of 2 friends who took kratom on a regular basis, tolerance & withdrawal scales up and down amazingly compared to many other drugs capable of inducing physical dependence: you can taper yourself down to 1/20th or less of your max intake, and it's still gonna be at least a bit shitty to stop taking it after all that tapering. strange claws!

@nprofile…d8jm kratom is super interesting pharmacologically and has some surprising claws to it in terms of physical dependence. it's also by far the best antidepressant I've ever used, I just had to be high all the time to get a really large antidepressant effect - but that was the most productive period of my entire life, no contest.
hopefully some useful meds will eventually be developed from applying #RationalDrugDesign to mitragynine.

@nprofile…392q I had been thinking of trying to use an AAA or AA size NiMH battery plus an IC boost regulator, but after searching around, it seems like I'd have to custom design a circuit like that since there aren't designs just lying around on the web, and there are a number of considerations such as whether/how I need to switch over to battery power when dynamo power is too low, etc.

many of the designs out there use a supercapacitor but I'm kind of interested in being contrarian and using a NiMH eneloop battery such that it could maintain charge between rides.

any #electronics tinkerers out there got a standlight circuit for a 3 watt bike dynamo?
I'm about to drag my bike out of storage, currently it has the dynamo and incandescent lights (2.4W front, 0.6W rear).
I have almost no experience and can barely solder, fwiw. #LearnElectronics

...that reminds me that PC Hack, while not the first video game I touched, was the first one I sought out and played of my own accord, and in fact that might have been more like 1989 than the early 90s.
it also gave me a nudge to learn DOS faster, as first the floppy disk it came on started failing so I had to try copying it like 30 times before the bad sectors all came thru, and then later I was getting in trouble for using too much space on the 20MB hard drive and had to hide my shit.
