That’s a $1625 per bottle shot price. It’s a bit steep, but not super out of line (based on bottle price).
We normally priced to pay for the bottle by 25%, so it’s a bit of a discount off that. Though for the super premium stuff like this I’d normally price more aggressively, so I’d probably have priced it more at 50% ($48/oz).

I believe you are fundamentally correct, though one could say you may have to interact with CTV collaborative custody eventually as someone paying you may use a traffic control TX to pay you. But that’s still different than using CTV. Once the payment is settled in *your* UTXO, there’s no CTV aspect remaining.

Yes, less hand wavy, and it comports with what I thought you were saying. Thanks.
But I’m not sure it overcomes my point. In 5 halvings (~2040), the subsidy is ~19M sats. Holding the fee at 25M sats, that fully covers the current security budget at a PPP of $450k/₿ in today’s dollars.
In 10 halvings (~2064), the subsidy will be 610k sats/block. A few of 25M sats/block would need to have a PPP of ~$761k/₿ in today’s dollars for the same budget as today.
At the limit (0 subsidy, in 2141), the same budget is maintained (for a fee of 25M sats/block) at a PPP of $780k/₿.
That seems a rather bearish PPP price point for 2040, 2064, and 2141.
If the PPP rises faster than this (which pretty much everyone in Bitcoin believes), then the security budget increases relative to today. Also, if total block fees go up, the security budget increases. Of course, missing these to the downside means the budget goes down, relative.
Drivechains are argued to increase the net block fee, but they’re not the only thing which can do that. And many argue that they do it in a potentially negative manner. Other techniques will also increase the net fee (or reduce the per-effective-tx fee, such as LN channels). As adoption increases, that will also bid up the fee, but PPP increases should act to push it down. So I feel 0.25₿ (25M sats/block) is pretty reasonable, long term.
So, I’m not yet convinced that the security mode is as fragile as you are suggesting.

You handwave through your main point. Why isn’t the security model viable?
Fee revenue can stay constant in Bitcoin terms (~25M sats/block) and totally pay for the security of the system. Today that means a reward of ~6.5 Bitcoin/block. In 5 halvings, that means ~44M sats/block.
So all Bitcoin has to do to meet today’s security budget is hit the purchasing power equivalent of ~$450k today… by 2040.
I somehow think it’ll do far better than that.

I’m getting up to speed on it. Not sure what to think yet. At present, it looks like Steve is using the patent to protect people (upstream customers) being sued by Cursoe under a patent they filed. But definitely a situation that merits watching. Defensive patenting is a legitimate strategy, and for now, that seems to be Upstream’s play against Crusoe.
Full disclosure: Distributed Hash & CryptoCloaks filed a joint patent on using shrouds in a large scale (not home) mining environment. For the same reason, so that someone can’t try to patent it and block us and try to cover home use too. (Home use is disclosed as a prior art use in our application)
I fully expect to be held to account if we misuse it.

Actually, I’d say that pursuing Apple would be a horrible idea, since they have the power to totally crush him. But yeah, he can ignore it and eventually be unable to sue them due to the statute of limitations passing. (Ongoing infringement could be actionable, or blocked by latches, depending on tons of things). But that’s only with respect to Apple. It doesn’t stop him from trying to go after others.
Also, I’m not so familiar with UK law, so unsure of what will be the impact in that country.

This is not the case for copyright, at least in the US. You do lose patent, trademark, and trade secret, for failing to defend, but not copyright. One loses the right to collect damages against parties who infringe too long, but not new parties. (Except if there’s a case that could rise to the level of creating a latches defense, but that’s different than losing the right, and is pretty unique).
That said, CSW is fraudulently claiming copyright, so it’s a moot point with regard to him.

That’s why I said “ASIC operators should hold their pools accountable”
I could be wrong, of course, and many ASIC operators might totally not care about this.
Personally, unless there’s something extreme, I don’t think I’d support a consensus change that forces an equilibrium state. To me, the downside risk there is bigger. If you take the position that these are “unintended consequences,” what’s to say that a new change to fix this consequence doesn’t cause more issues.

Yes. It’s not “zero-fee” in that they’re not paying anything, but the fee is out-of-band (ie: not included in the TX).
It’s anti-social, and unnecessary, though it’s not a consensus issue. There’s no reason the fee *couldn’t* be encoded into the TX itself, even for a directly mined TX. If the fee is in the TX, then the direct-miner is still guaranteed to receive 100% of it.
Only reason to hide the fee is to intentionally obscure what is being paid, which is why I take issue with it. On a few small TX, it’s not a big deal, but if it becomes common, especially with big TX, then I believe it starts to negatively impact the fee market, and negatively affects ASIC operators.
To be clear, I have no issue with direct-mining of TX. Plenty of reasons for that. But put the fee in-band.
ASIC operators should hold their pools accountable for taking these TX, by moving pools.

Yeah. I don’t like the 0-fee mining of super-heavy inscriptions part, as I feel that fucks with the fee market, but that’s not super widespread (yet). Overall, I think it’s a shiny object that will flash, and then subside to something that ends up being used only when economically relevant.
My point for doing these updates is I also feel that people arguing (either pro or con) without data are just shouting in the wind.

After the LastPass hack, I started thinking about how we could "fix" passwords. Of course, using something like signing with a key is optimal.
But most sites currently aren't set up for that, & just want vanilla passwords. Password management software seems like a good idea…
