Penguin, Tasmania, level of coolness.
1. Named after a little penguin colony.
2. Main focal point is a giant penguin statue near the beach front.
3. Next to the giant penguin is a Tardis!
Unbeatable...

I posted a poll a couple of days ago asking this question:
"So if lines are drawn between the US and Europe, where do you think Albanese will side. The US, or the Commonwealth?"
Now a poll with a different slant. Who do you think Australia should side with?

It's Easter, but I haven't been able to hide away and pretend I'm dead for 3 days 😄
So thinking about some doom and gloom scenarios, I wonder where little Australia will end up?

Walking in a forest in the rain. I wish I could post the overpowering smell of the eucalypts, the sounds of branches creaking against trees, the feel of the different textures of leaves and barks, or the sweet taste of the native currants
Here are some small mycena, with a couple of prickly currants, lying on the forest floor.

I only spent a couple of times at Moomba, I was usually in Ballarat over this weekend when I lived in Vic. Ballarat has a big chess tournament and a magnificent flower festival, the Begonia Festival, over the Labour Day weekend

2026-03-03 21:50:20 UTC

Australian public holidays are weird. This weekend, Tasmania has an extra day off for '8 hours day', a very specific Labour Day celebration. Victoria also celebrates Labour Day this weekend commemorating the establishment of an 8 hour working day. Meanwhile, Queensland celebrates Labour Day at the start of May, like most of the rest of the World, while NSW has Labour Day in October for reasons I don't know.
This weekend Canberra celebrates Canberra Day because politicians would rather talk about themselves than the average person.
South Australia has Adelaide Cup Day this weekend, because workers like nothing better than to lose their money to bookies and other crooks, while seeing whether their horse wins or dies.
WA had Labour Day last week because they are on a completely different time zone while Northern Territory doesn't have a Labour Day because it's too bloody hot to work there.

Just found out that a young person who I used to coach chess to has a debilitating form of chronic fatigue and is bedridden, light and noise sensitive. They must only be in their early 20s, it is very sad.
A bright note in the sad story is that a friend from the chess world would visit in hospital regularly spending hours at a time in a room where the only communication was silent.
Unfortunately, the visits stopped after hospital discharge, as distance was an issue.
Be kind people, you never know what tomorrow has in store for you 🙂

Yesterday at the Tessellated Pavement we were lucky to spot a fossil in the rocks. The rocks in this area aren't good for finding the oldest fossils. Tasmania has some fossils dating back 800 million years (sorry if I have any creationists in my followers). This is possibly a trace fossil of a bivalve mollusc and will date to between 60 million and 160 million years.
By the way, I'm no expert, so if anyone knows better, I am happy to learn 🙂

Working this morning, going for a walk this afternoon. At least that's the plan

Yesterday's walk was a good one for birds. We were buzzed around by a Grey Fantail, serenaded by a Butcherbird, followed and spied on by a pair of Green Rosellas, disturbed a White Faced Heron, some Honeyeaters and a Dusky Robin. But the star was a Superb Fairy Wren who stayed still long enough to get a halfway decent photo 🙂

Arkady Dvorkovich, President of the World Chess Federation, FIDE, and ex member of Russia's Parliament is an apologist for Russia's war in Ukraine and governs a sporting body which enables banned Russian players to compete. Could any sporting body be more corrupt?

I'm not able to post as much as I'd like, but the end of my busy period is in sight. I might need to rest for a while and I'll start catching up with all the beautiful people I've met here.
In the meantime, here's a rhododendron flower that I saw on my weekend walk.

Was able to get out for a walk today. Plenty of orchids beginning to show in Hollybank Forest in Northern Tasmania.

I was forever scarred by observing biscuits gravy for breakfast when I was last in America. Your experience sounds at least as bad 😱

Friendship is a difficult one, often shifting. I guess being aware of our own wants and needs is the key.

Our new house has a window with a ledge, perfect for cats to sit on and guilt trip us if we leave and take their laps away from them.

We put cats in boarding for a couple of days so as not to stress them (or lose them) during our move. We picked them up yesterday afternoon and after some complaints and some exploring they have both settled down.
One is on my lap after vomiting under the bed earlier. All is normal 😂

After a mad few days, we now own a unit in Launceston having sold our place in Beaconsfield. Our stuff will be delivered tomorrow so we have a night of limbo before we start the next phase of our lives.

That sounds amazing. It's before my time in Australia, so I don't really know about it but I'll read up about it. Enjoy
