The core runs out of hydrogen and starts burning other junk, which burns faster. Since the star needs to get rid of the extra energy, the envelope expands to get more surface area and less opacity to escaping light. So, the "cooler" part is a side effect of the dropping opacity.

@nprofile…e5g0 Years ago, I encountered a book on Euclidean geometry, written by a pair of Russian (well, Slavic, nowadays) mathematicians. The book set out to show that almost all of Euclidean geometry in The Elements could be proven with only a straight edge. At the end, they proved, using a straight edge, that (A) it is impossible to find the center of a circle, and (B) it is possible to find the center of a circle if there exists another circle somewhere. They posited that (A) was an example of Goedel's Incompleteness.
I found the book in the math library at Weizmann Institute 45 years ago. Might still be there.

To summarize my thoughts, economic activity has infinite variance, and 99% of economists just ignore this. Some out of ignorance and some out of expediency. Something unexpected always happens, like, yanno, bombing Iran, but we never know what the unexpected events will be. Sounds hopeless, but there are perfectly good theorems.

Stable distributions have two shape parameters that both affect the “chubbiness” of a distribution, α (tail parameter) and γ (core width). The γ parameter corresponds to σ for a normal distribution, while α gives the slope of the tails at large distances from the core. If we are comparing two stable distributions, can we tell which parameter is responsible for the difference?

@nprofile…59k6 I find it very misleading. 'Black Swan' implies that the event is something we could not have anticipated. This is wrong on two fronts. First, earthquakes, for example, are anticipated with a perfectly known probability distribution, but when one occurs, it is definitely a surprise. Second, even if we consider unknown unknowns, these still have a probability distribution; meaning, our trip to Australia is likely to encounter all sorts of strange wildlife, swans or not. Maybe swans in Australia all have three feet or speak Cantonese? More shocking discoveries are less likely.
Besides, I cannot even think about how I would apply the concept. Do I have a random process that spits out a swan every day, and I add their color (0-1 for black to white)? But I would not even be doing this since I think that all swans are white.
So, while I agree that it is evocative of surprise, I think it is a particularly poor analogy.

@nprofile…749s Even if you found a paper that met any criteria you came up with, chances are that you would be wrong anyway. There all many examples of papers that were supposed to be world-shattering breakthroughs and ended up as arcana.
My personal favorite is a paper by Paul Lévy that was the culmination of his lifetime of effort, and it hasn't even been translated into English.
