I refused to join Bluesky and Threads because unlike Mastodon, they are operated by for-profit entities.
Bluesky was founded by Jack Dorsey, who co-founded Twitter and advocated for Muskrat to buy it.
Threads is a Meta company.
No. Way. In. Hell. was I signing up.
I've never regretted joining Mastodon in the years since I left Twitter.
I've had more meaningful engagement here than I ever did after spending over 12 years on the bird site.

It's such a shame, because there is no reason Skype shouldn't be as major a communications platform now as it was in the early 2000's. It being acquired by Microsoft was the death knell.
It should've remained independent.

I remember for a time Skype was the main way I used to communicate when I traveled away from home and conducted podcast interviews with filmmakers based all over the world.
The service is shutting down in May.

Silicon Valley is hyping up AI mainly to keep Wall Street and investors excited.
This is what happened with other supposedly "game-changing" technologies such as the metaverse, cryptocurrency/the blockchain, the internet of things, etc.
But the amount of money being poured into AI is mind-numbing. It will never be profitable enough to recoup the billions of investment dollars flowing into it.
That gravy train is going to run out of track soon.
And Wall Street is not known for its patience.

My final thought for a while:
Many of us in the U.S.:
- live next to
- are Married to
- sleeping with
- related to
- work for/with
- and have "Friends" (ha!) who
are okay with YOUR rights being stripped away and you being dehumanized and oppressed.
Years ago, a college professor once told me she saw disturbing parallels between the U.S. and the Roman Empire before it fell.
I agreed with her then, and I find her words even more prophetic now.

But you can’t budget and save your way out of poverty and financial inequality.
Funny, these financial gurus NEVER target the ridiculous compensation of CEOs + C-suite executives while employee wages remain stagnant, the federal minimum wage remains $7.25 an hour, and the costs of living keeps skyrocketing.
No you need to just save, budget and invest your insufficient salary, stop eating avacado toast, bring your lunch to your job where you’re underpaid, and for god’s sake stop indulging in those lattes!

I was in my final year of junior high school when this epic miniseries debuted. There was no cable or streaming. No internet to "spoil" plot details.
There were only 3 broadcast networks. EVERY one was talking about this landmark miniseries.
It's theme song remains powerful and haunting - like the miniseries itself.

Dear white people: when Black people share our experiences with racism, don't ask us
"What can be done about it?"
We didn't invent racism.
And on some level, many of you know what needs to be done. It just sits outside of your comfort level.
Well, you need to learn to sit with that discomfort, then pose your questions about what needs to be done to other white people. You need to challenge racism within:
* YOUR family members who
are racist (The major holidays
are coming. Time to prepare!)
* Your friends and social
groups
* Your co-workers and
colleagues
* YOURself
Asking Black people to explain the dynamics of racism and to offer solutions, unless they volunteer that information, is asking for them to "educate you" by doing FREE emotional and intellectual labor - and most of us have enough on our plate trying to survive and thrive.
