I find comments like this revealing
at a certain point you should no longer be struggling with syntax, nor should you have trouble picking out syntax errors. that point is pretty early on in your career. if you've been programming for 5 years and you still spend a half hour on a semicolon or equals sign, you should give it up and go be a games journalist
but this is how it is for a large fraction of professional programmers. they go their whole careers struggling with syntax, because they never achieved basic competence with their tools. programming is so miserable for them because they never stopped fighting the language. everything about it is high friction
also related to why people obsess over programming languages and tooling and why programming discourse is all about junior-level stuff. they blame their tools for their incompetence instead of working on themselves. surely switching to [trendy language/IDE] will let them display their full skills! it's [old tool]'s fault their code sucks
how many professional programmers -- who now proudly reduce their life's work to mere typing -- have ever played a game of typer shark to improve their typing speed and accuracy?

this line of argumentation, such as it is, results in an instant loss of respect from me. it's embarrassing, childish, and emotionally-driven. it's a blatant false analogy and linus knows it. also, other people posting shit like this is classic appeal to authority :ackchyually:
I've been in programming long enough that there are no authorities I will bow to. someone may *convince* me that I'm wrong, but I will not unquestioningly follow anyone's opinions about the practice of building software. most "experts" are wrong, incompetent, and borderline retarded. the abysmal state of software quality shows exactly what value their "best practices" have
messy yellow shit is someone else's highlighting

michael crichton wrote in one of his books, perhaps state of fear, that despite all our labor-saving gadgets the amount of time spent on household chores has barely changed
and he didn't just make it up. this has been studied and it is true. what has changed is now men do a lot of the work, so women are doing less than before. but now women are also mostly working, so on the whole we're much busier now than people were in 1900
I haven't looked into any attempted explanations for why this is. I would make an educated guess that women working has reduced household efficiency, and people today are not skilled at housekeeping so that also hurts efficiency. perhaps there's a household labor sized hole in the human brain and it will be filled with something no matter how many gadgets we buy

I've been saying for years that computing is on the edge of human capability and if we had to develop it from scratch today, we would not be able to
the rush to embrace chatbots because it's oh so much easier than continuing to actually use your brain strongly supports my claim. apparently, all this time most programmers were in constant agony and the sweet temptation of cognitive surrender was impossible to resist
