Har — this weekend there was a small traveling funfair in our town with a huge number of claw machines, just banks and banks of them. After observing for a while I had to conclude that the money inserted in those machines is a tax on deficient faculties of observation. It’s so obviously rigged, but most people still think it’s their lack of skill.

Two of my most admired authors. I’m just re-reading Dick and being reminded of what an amazing literary craftsman he also was. That often gets overlooked among the power of his imagination and vision, but his sparse and deceptively simple prose is at least as well crafted as Hemingway, although in a completely different world.

One pair of #moorhens in the local park has been building a much larger and more elaborate nest than all the others every year, always in the same place. This year they have really outdone themselves, building a veritable little castle. Here you can see proud Mum brooding on her second batch of eggs for the season.

Apple Keyboard Rant:
My M3 Max MacBook Pro, for which I paid over €5,500, has developed sticky keys that often only work on the second press. Compressed air doesn’t help. I bought this laptop, among other things, specifically because Butterfly Gate was behind us and Everything Is Good Now.
To be clear: I do not care what the cause is. Not even a tiny bit.I have a 15-year old Lenovo laptop that probably has more crumbs mass than key switches under the key caps and the keyboard is still perfect. It has never ever not typed a letter when the key was pressed. Never. Functioning Laptop Keyboards Are Possible. Also: The key caps on the Lenovo keyboard can easily be removed for cleaning and replaced without permanently destroying key switch mechanisms that are apparently made of gossamer, tissue paper and butterfly wings.
Also: The keyboard on my MacBook Pro also sucks as a keyboard. It’s mushy, cheap, the keys are flat and the typing feel is no better than a €20 grab bin keyboard from the supermarket. This is what behaves like a €20 keyboard in a €5,500 laptop.
How in the ever loving world is a multi trillion dollar company unable or, more likely, unwilling, to make a high-quality and functioning keyboard, in the face of so many examples of keyboards that not only work without failure for decades, but also actually function accepably for the purpose which they exist?
I’ve been using Apple computers since the Apple II. Dammit, I was even at Reed at the same time as Steve Jobs and met him a couple of times in the dorm there. I don’t want to stop using MacOS. I like it and prefer it, even though I work for a Windows company and have to jump through a lot of hoops to keep using it. But dammit, a laptop with a usable, reliable and even pleasant to use keyboard is really beginning to look pretty fracking attractive, even when the price for that means moving back to fracking Windows.
Ugh. I have spoken.

On alternative smart watches: For reasons I’m currently doing a long-term dogfooding test of a high-end Android phone and smartwatch combination. The pain points on this Android Wear smartwatch (OnePlus Watch 3, latest Android Wear version, paired with an Oppo phone, which is the same company) are not papercuts, they are carving knife slashes:
* There are hundreds of watch faces. With almost no exceptions, they are all so bad and so ugly that they make my eyes bleed. And designed by someone who never even considered what a smartwatch watch face needs to do.
* Media controls are comically bad. Skip ahead and skip back can only be used at around 5 second intervals. Between that they do nothing. If you stop playing anything for more than one minute the media controls do nothing and you must re-start on the phone. Even within the one-minute grace period restarting will often take up to 30 seconds between tapping Play and play actually happening.
* The one (paid) watch face I’ve found with decent complication support is not editable after the first time. There may be a way to do it, but I haven’t found it yet.
* Activating the Gemini AI assistant disables a lot of functions. Like setting reminders. You can’t set reminders if Gemini is your assistant instead of the old Google Assistant, because it can’t do that.
* During workouts, it generally takes the pulse sensor nearly 20 minutes to get anything close to an accurate reading. Up until then it will generally tell me my heart rate is around 190 without complaining. (White skin, no tattoos on my wrist, no excessive sweating etc.)
* Notification tone volume editing stopped working a couple of updates ago and hasn’t come back. Notifications are now so quiet I can only hear them if the watch is next to my ear.
All that being said, it does have two really awesome features:
* I don’t need a sleep timer for music or podcasts. It automatically stops play when I fall asleep, which it registers pretty accurately. The sleep monitoring also seems to be pretty good. I would pay real money to have this in my Apple Watch.
* Real 5 days of battery life. Really. However, this is a mixed blessing because it’s achieved by having 2 SOCs, one real one and one super low power one. This is probably the reason for many of the problems, because it’s constantly switching to the background SOC to save battery.

This morning I did two things: I modified my FTP tool to include detection and graceful handling of server throttling, and swapped out my help system for a new one that requires completely different calls. In the past these two tasks would have taken several days to a week. Today I completed both in 90 minutes. I have very mixed feelings about this.

Watched the #AppleF1 movie last night. I'm really glad I waited until it was screened without additional payment. Dramatically it's a mediocre B movie with an infantile script. And it also once again revives the tired old racist trope of the bountiful white massa mentoring the grateful black boy. Followed at the end with the lonesome hero riding off into the sunset. Cringe. I just learned that the now abandoned building of the former Moreton Hall Catholic boys’ boarding school in Bury St Edmunds was further destroyed by arson this summer. I can imagine it was another former pupil. I was sent there when I was 5 and it was a hell on earth of abuse and dark indoctrination. It was literally sending your kids to prison. The whole place should be razed to the ground and obliterated forever.
