In case people are wondering why GitHub has been having some issues as of late - the GitHub COO recently shared that they're handling up to an order of magnitude more traffic than they were a year ago.
It's not like GitHub is just serving up pictures and text - things like the core git backend and actions are quite complex to host at scale. Idk, I guess I'm not surprised there are some stability issues when they're going from handling 1 billion commits/year to 14 billion commits/year.

I just went in for my third dose against Tick-Based Encephalitis, and the lovely person administering the shot told me that they are expecting to be able to provide immunization against Lyme disease either in 2027 or 2028!
Apparently Pfizer has a vaccine currently being trialed in phase 3. And they expect it will go well, which means a vaccine might actually become available soon!

The "recirculate air" button in cars should be illegal. It's literally: "Press this button to reduce attentiveness and increase risk"
I haven't looked at the literature for this yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if that one button lead to an attention loss on par with "drinking + driving", and "texting + driving".

Semi-regularly reminder that we not only have the technology to almost entirely eradicate airborne diseases and pandemics, it's surprisingly cheap too!
HEPA-grade air filtration costs next to nothing to deploy, requires relatively little maintenance, and can scrub the air of almost all airborne disease. We've managed to rid our water and food supplies from diseases. There are no technical hurdles to do the same for the air we breathe too!

I didn't realize that Swiss trains apparently also adhere to the "schedule for 80% of capacity rule".
Apparently trains in Switzerland go around 80% of the top speed possible on the track. The 20% overhead is used to make up time in the case of delays.
The thinking is: stable and predictable operation is more important than going faster. Because the cost of passengers regularly missing layovers is much higher than the benefits of trains being 20% faster.

Headlines that sound like they're made up but aren't: Israel nearly hit Greta Thunberg with a drone strike in international waters.
Why? So Israel can block food, water, and other basic supplies from entering Gaza. Supplies have been blocked from entering the country for the past two months, and food will run out in about two weeks.
Thunberg was about to board a supply boat to deliver supplies. To prevent Palestinians from starving to death. But nah, fuck that - drone strike instead.

I've spent the last two weeks eating my way through southern Italy, and one of the places we went out for dinner to made tortellini filled with braised lamb and kimchi, served in a dashi broth made with bbq roasted daikon.
The combination of kimchi and pasta is superb. I made a red sauce with oven-roasted courgettes, forest mushrooms, garlic, and white wine. The kimchi worked so well in that!
Don't add too much - just enough that it melts into the sauce without standing out.

Does anyone have any good resources around automata and how to model systems with them?
I've seen the cellular automata demos, and they're fun! I've also used / written finite state machine implementations, and I tend to model a lot of things with them.
But I know that automata can go a lot further than that. For example, I know that the peep magic peephole optimizer is/was based on automata, and it's what made it efficient. I want to learn more about automata like that?

My favorite string type is probably `Cow<‘static, str>`, since it only allocates if it strictly needs to. And if you use `impl Into<Cow<‘static, str>>` as a bound, you can pass both string literals and allocated strings into functions without a problem.
My least favorite string type is probably `Cow<‘static, str>`. Because seeing something like `impl Into<Cow<‘static, str>>` in a function parameter is a *lot* to read, write, and understand. And it still misses a bunch of optimizations.

While not a perfect solution — Firefox’s RLBox toolkit (https://rlbox.dev/) provides the template for that. It compiles a C program to Wasm, puts it inside a Wasm sandbox, and provides the same API on the outside of the sandbox.
Now if the sandboxes library exhibits UB, it can no longer be used to exploit the rest of the program. Here’s a full writeup of how this works:

Don’t just take my word for it; the Chromium project makes this pretty clear with their “rule of 2”. Pick no more than two of:
- code which processes untrustworthy inputs
- code written in an unsafe language
- code which runs with no sandbox
The inputs and outputs to programs are typically fixed to the domain and cannot be changed. Meaning: if C++ code cannot be replaced with a memory-safe language, and cannot be rewritten to be memory-safe, the only remaining option is to sandbox it.

- Closed-off spaces
- Close contact
- Crowds

This reminds me of the early 2020’s meme on the nature of exponential growth. If the curve is exponential, it doesn’t matter where on the graph you look — it’s all exponential. Instead a lot of people only notice the last bit in the chart where the differences become impossible to ignore.
I feel like Doctorow did a good job explaining the lifecycle in his “enshittification” post. Bluesky seems locked in, even if right now it’s still early in the cycle and people can’t always tell.

Is it okay if I quote you on this? There have been designs floating around proposing we add `defer` to Rust, supposedly to enable asynchronous destructors - but intended to be used in sync code too.
I don’t necessarily feel strongly against adding`defer` as a complimentary tool, though a language extension might be a bit much. But I do feel strongly `defer` is not a viable alternative for RAII-style destructors, even in async. And I think you’re doing a great job explaining why that is.

Phew, that’s the roughest I’ve felt after a booster in a while. Mostly my own fault though. A quick timeline:
- Tuesday at noon: received booster
- Tuesday evening: started to feel a little feverish, had to lie down
- Wednesday: couldn’t do much the entire day. Did go for an hour walk though. Took two meetings, but had to drop early from the second
- Thursday: oops, I only slept four hours and had a fair bit of work to do. Getting through the day was tough, but I managed
- Friday: all better!

The acceptable number of people getting SARS at any given event should be zero. Not ten. Not one hundred. Zero.
SARS-CoV-2 causes chronic disease in 10-30% of infections. That means for every 10 people who are infected, for 1-3 of them that will be a life-altering experience. Some will eventually recover. Others may not.
As reports of people getting infected with SARS at RustConf roll in, it’s hard not to think of those whose life will inevitably change because of this.

I really miss going to Rust and Wasm events, hanging out with folks, geeking out. But like, the last time I got Covid it knocked me flat for about six months - and I don't know how I'll respond to a Next Time. So there really can't be one.
It's so draining to feel like I'm the only one advocating for clean air, accessible environments, spaces that don't risk having participants walking away with long-term disabilities.
