So, I just figured out another reason charity sucks sweaty monkey balls. Food donated to charity; grocery stores love to do that! They'll donate tons of food for the needy. It's all expired, possibly rotting food that they can no longer sell, but who are you to complain? It's free!
Universal basic income, now. Stores can't save all the good food for the not-poors that way. That's why food stamps are so powerful, and charities are so pathetic. You only take donations? How about go and demand the needy's fair share from those generous donors?

Well, let's say you and I want to secretly exchange stuff nontransparently, but all we have is append only logs. I add a private message to you, to my append only log, that says I'm starting a different append only log. Using that log (only shared between us) we exchange secrets. So everything I publish is completely transparent except for everything that isn't.
I don't think there are any use cases for blockchains. It's just spinning your wheels for what seems like it'd be useful, but there are always better ways to do it.

Reason I roll my eyes every time I hear "append-only log" is it's completely useless and unnecessary. We already have things called "hard disks" that can save a log, with no obligation to delete it once saved. And to use an append-only log, you have to sign new updates to it, otherwise anyone could start appending to your log. So why not use the signing key for identification? If you do that, what's the point of the log?
Just reading this code it's like INVALID_PROOF, verifyUpgrade(proof), class TreeProof, settleProof() all to prove that your current log entry refers to all past log entries. Why would you care if someone's latest log refers to all their past logs? What's invalid about them removing a past log, and publishing that as an update? Just...
1. keep a list of root hashes for every log
2. someone sends you a signed root hash for their latest log
3. it's verified. you're done. Add it to the list.
4. download the rest of the latest log later.
Why does no one do that? It's not append-only, because why would it need to be? To keep me from deleting a log entry on my own log? You have all the old root hashes! If I delete a log entry or edit one in my latest log, just look at those old ones.

It was Lennart Pottering's uh... "passion" project. He's the one who demanded we all use his sound server even though it added a layer of complexity and a new point of failure, and sound already worked. You might know it as PulseAudio. That particular fellow realized a critical vulnerability in the "open source" community. None of us compile anything anymore.
So if he could get projects to add "optional" systemd support that could only be removed at compile time, then binary distributions like Debian or Arch had to choose: require systemd, or forbid it. He also has big influence in the Redhat project, so they turned everything to use systemd, and their users couldn't do shit about it. Debian/Ubuntu followed, and Arch was soon after. Because once most people (using Redhat) were using systemd, they went through the trouble of learning how to use it, and came to expect it.
Even if it could be made secure, the way it was introduced makes it really hard to avoid vulnerabilities, because uh... it's mandatory, so you just have to hope it's secure. And it's a big fat kitchen sink project with no discipline about keeping things secure, because it's mandatory, so they're accountable for nothing.

It's a classic technique of the rich bastards to try and get us overwhelmed with focusing on the little problems. Something I've heard called "The Terrible Trivium." Getting mad about littering, or about women's bodies, or religion, or even sports teams. I don't want to say abuse is a "little thing" but they'll use anything to keep us exhausted and at odds with each other. So that's all I'm worried about.

I'm sorry I didn't know. That sucks. All I was commenting on was the way you said it. We can't focus on everyone at once we just can't, and that gives power to the worst among us. Dividing our attention is suicide at this point. If I could wave my hand and stop all abuse, I would. Abuse is only a phenomena with people who have power over others. The wholesale trafficking and torture of scads of babies is not something perverted old Uncle Eke can accomplish. So before you get mad at all the sick, twisted and broken people in our society who have to struggle to stay off the streets, keep in mind that IF you take away the power they have over someone, THEN the abuse stops. The only thing you have to do is stop people from having power over others, and everything works out.
And you are giving the rich ruling class orders of magnitude more power over us than anyone else. So I think it's a good idea for you to focus on not doing that, even if it doesn't have a huge effect on the poor who are occasionally also pieces of shit.

Yeah this program is really cool! It's not even a server software, it's a client that gets messages from different servers, then aggregates them all cool like and stuff, even if the servers don't. It's a little... buggy; my ability to database is a bit lacking. But hopefully I'll find someone interested in that sort of thing someday, maybe we could get it working better together.

I got sick of the bizarre and stilted cmake language, and wanted to write code generators in C, so I sorta spent several years of my life making a build system that's just... in C. Like you call a function to build a project, or compile a file. Which is really neat and cool, but I'm kind of a hack, so I have trouble to make it less jank all on my own. Plus I dunno how much of it's a terrible idea.
Plus everyone else just uses cmake and doesn't generate code.

It's in both, yeah. GTK3 put it in PDEPEND because the only reason they depend on librsvg is to convert the SVG icons of the Adwaita theme into png. GTK4 doesn't use it for anything else either, but made it a hard RDEPEND. In both cases it's not exactly optional.
What I did was mask gtk, so it wouldn't upgrade for now.

Well, gtk now have added mandatory dependencies on librsvg. librsvg that you assholes converted to rust for no reason you entitled high and mighty uncaring bullies void of empathy who never had to struggle a day in your lives.
So now to use (um) any GUI programs, you scammers force me to depend on gigantic static rust binaries that can't be audited or checked for bugs or security breaches. I have to spend hours compiling rust, in addition to trusting the binaries, because I'm not a rich boy whose daddy bought him a big fast computer with lotsa RAM. I have to trust mountains more code, that could all be hiding malicious activity or just random bugs. An army of auditors couldn't go through it all in their entire lifetime.
This is why I hate rust. It is the worst and you are bad for liking it.

I could be wrong about this, but when you see a stranger reply to your post on the Fediverse, that stranger is:
A) Rarely someone on your instance
B) A follower of one of your followers
I don't think it's generally the case that random strangers get sent someone's post. The few times it happens, they're usually brigading because someone who IS a friend of a friend told their followers to go pick on you. But they had to actively tell them, and share the link, before anyone got to see your post.
So unless you're actively under attack, a stranger replying to your post is most likely someone who follows someone who follows you. Whatever you make of it, that seems to be the case.

There are a few (FEW) master manipulators, who engage in a sort of gaslighting, where they will give advice carefully crafted to make someone feel dumb, because they want to put women in their place or some crap. Mostly it's just people trying to help, and the OP is a little too suspicious of strangers. People mistakenly think they own a given conversation, and feel invaded when a stranger comes onto "their" replies.
What I've been told works best is to treat someone explaining things you already know as if they're an excited little boy who wants to show what they learned. The master manipulators lose their tooth enamel from grinding, the little boys at heart beam proudly, and everyone else says "oops sorry I thought you didn't know."

That's why I'm not sure history was a good idea. Because the people with power are learning from history, just as much as you are. People learned how to stop Ghana from achieving independence. They learned what caused the French revolution, and how to tyrannize people without repeating it. They learned about Gandhi, and how to act to prevent India from breaking free. The USA war of independence. None of those things can ever happen again, because the people in power learned from history, and have the power to stop repeating it. But you have no power to stop repeating the history that sends you back into debt and servitude. What's the inevitable result?

Yeah it's not like we have no way to predict when the solar activity will spike that high, and no idea how often that occurs. It's not that we need to be prepared. We need to stop taking out safeguards and fallbacks to very fragile systems, just because the owners of those systems don't want us to have anything to fall back on, so we'll be desperate to give them all our money and power. "Too big to fail" should be a warning, not a goal.

It's funny because we don't have to be. The receptionist at the counseling place I go to started handing me an iPad® every time, to fill out a form for no reason. A lot of these computers that decide whether we live or die were only put in there as an excuse to sell computers. It is entirely possible to have a truck continue working with its computer on the fritz.
That's not a solution I mean, just something to be salty about.

5 medium sized tomatoesmaybe a half cup of diced oniondecent sized clove of garlic1 jalapeño pepperspritz of limefresh cilantroa generous 1/8tsp of salt1) Chop up and crush the garlic. (Garlic press is OP) Let it sit there to "garlic" for about 10 min.
2) Put the soup pot on medium with no water, and let the tomatoes and pepper sit in there until they start squeaking. A little charred is ideal, and do NOT wash the pot.
3) Throw the tomatoes into a blender. Cutting them finely just isn't feasible.
4) Lightly blend them JUST enough that there aren't any big chunks. (Stubborn big chunks you can just cut up.)
5) Chop up the onions. Anything you chop has to be small enough to get picked up by a tortilla chip
6) Chop up the pepper with a knife... blenders don't get it right. (If you have a fancy vegetable chopomatic thingy it might.)
7) Herb scissors are good to shred the cilantro. Be sure to cut it all twice, so you don't have cilantro spears those are annoying af
8) Throw everything in the soup pot, incl salt and lime, and stew it for a while. This is because raw onions will haunt you for hours.
9) Get your used coffee filter for a little American panache, or just a paper towel. Put in a big funnel, coffee side down, and put the funnel in a jar.
10) Pour the tomato soup into the funnel, not too much you need to leave it for a while.
11) Leave it for a while. The water will drain out of the soup, making it more of a goop than a soup.
12) Throw out the coffee water b/c nasty. Use a spoon to scoop the tomato goop into a second jar.
13) Label the jar "Salsla"
14) Take tablespoon of it from the jar, and dip tortilla chips in that, because you're all alone and have no one to share it with, so you can't use all the salsla at once.
15) Rest goes in the fridge.
Getting the amounts wrong doesn't hurt much. Adjust to taste or whatever. If you live where I do, and getting a hot jalapeño is fucking impossible, then maybe add a knife's edge of cayenne pepper. This should take about a half hour, at most. Cleanup is way longer b/c cleaning a blender is annoying, and you have to scrub the pot. Tasty slasa tho
