@nprofile…rcl7 I do kinda get what they are trying to emulate, having seen and used some hardware mixers IRL. A lot of feel to using that stuff. But yeah, this seems really silly...

@nprofile…rcl7 This does make me wonder... This is presumably audio processing/mixing software, right? How much of the gigs of memory is used by doing this?
How much faster/lighter would the software be if these were video gamey dynamic knobs/dials? Or even 3d knobs rendered using the same graphics space for textured 3d uv maps instead?
It's certainly a special way to do the interface, I suppose. I guess being "exactly the same" was really important for the software users.

@nprofile…8q5e It's quite a good idea. But keep in mind controllers too. You will need some solution for them or some smart snapping. It would otherwise not be a good experience to try aiming at those little items with a stick that is sensitive enough to turn or move.
But aside from that, Immersion! I personally love UI like this that is built into logical world interaction. It adds a lot to the feel of being present in a space instead of watching a screen!

Currently unemployed and staring at my "replacement game dev laptop", which is shaped like a raspberry pi 5 canakit due to budget cuts.
Thank you for the reminder this situation had nothing to do with my skills. Time to setup my new machine, and dev like the 90s again.

@nprofile…q0h6 I think that is one place Shapez 1 in particular really excels though! It's not pressured, and there is infinite build space. So you can be as messy or as tightly packed as you want/are capable of.
It might take a while for the product to get to the hub. But it's all acceptable solutions!
Steer clear of the puzzle dlc though. It's no longer casual and I didn't really enjoy having to figure out the tightly packed things. I'm more a sprawling everywhere with long belts guy.

Been playing Shapez the last two evenings, because it is on sale:

It's really nice! Free form factory building where the only pressure is your own desires to make it go faster. No lose state. Ever increasing complexity (and amounts) of the demands makes you escalate your creations on your own terms.
If you like Tekkit from minecraft, the factory layout from Satisfactory, or conveyor logic solving, this is a nice chill game!

@npub1qxe…qrgk Yes. Remind yourself of those games made on normally silly "casual" engines. Like Celeste which originally was on pico8, or those adventure games made using Adventure Game Studio (from win 98). Or the sea of great stuff that got made using Klick and Play or RPG Maker.
Worry about everything else about the game, that makes it fun, a game, a message, etc. Engines are a means to get the message across, a language of words. The meaning, once expressed, can be translated later.

@npub1wp9…gw6s @npub1dcz…67k0 Oh, he also does the adorable sound effects! Kobold slide was so far the most funny one to do, he spent so long recording different versions of the "whee" and "whaa" sounds. It was super funny seeing our local office/house cat react to the final game spamming his voice recordings all the time. :)

@npub1wp9…gw6s Thanks for the encouragement, I've passed it to our artist! The art in our games is all thanks to our artist, @npub1dcz…67k0 He does a lot of research to give his art an amazing level of charm. I can't wait to bring more of his designs to life in our RPG project!

We are now working on a big low res but high content turn based RPG for Steam/itch.io. We've learned so much, my artist and I, and are super excited to put all this design experience to the test on a bigger (and for sale!) target. :)
