I just "discovered" this as a self-defense tactic recently, Pluralistic is one of my feeds, I am somehow not surprised this was advice from Mr. Doctorow a year ago! This has allowed me to dump Reddit but still stay informed by a few choice subs, as well as news articles without having to wade through through the minefield that is a modern website.

True, at this point the far right is just dumping every possible shitty meme into the network and letting it do it's magic. I have a friend who said to me out at the pub "I don't like that Kamala Harris, she's a socialist." I spat out my beer, and said "where did you get that idea from?" - They couldn't tell me, because most of them don't know. They aren't thinking, they're just accepting new instructions. All they have to do is say something angry and hand if off to the pundits, the talking heads, their social media feeds.

Hell, current right wing talking points basically call everyone slightly left of not grinding up the homeless for Soylent Green is a "radical leftist lunatic." Reagan's platform would have been called this if anyone in the orbit of the current admin or their followers had even the slightest understanding of even recent history. Part of the process that's led to MAGA is the false narrative "both sides are extreme" and somewhere in the middle, is where most Americans are. The Democrats are overwhelmingly conservative, there are a handful of people described as "radical left wing lunatics," that are social democrats at most. You've been manipulated over the last couple of decades to believe completely false narratives around what constitutes the centre, the left and the right. What constitutes "right" is moved so far from where it was, that anything that isn't extreme right wing populism counts as "radical socialism." Problem is none of you understand what that word means. Even AOC isn't calling for seizing the means of production.
