I haven’t been able to stop thinking about future AI’s ability to scan the entire blockchain and track people down so easily to make sure that they are a compliant citizen. I am wondering if this could foster a safer nation just due to the fact that they can/will know what everyone is up to, especially given the fact that AI will play a role in policing as well. I think it would be similar to what China is like except way less extreme. (Not saying I’m in favor of this).
The implications of this will be astounding. It’s strange because citizens will likely be able to keep their governments in check but governments will also be able to keep the citizens in check.
I do also think it depends on the size of the country. When it comes to privacy as well, it’s also ironic because the hardcore privacy enthusiasts on here might not even be aware of the amount of data that large institutions already have on them, so I guess the game becomes trying to keep only certain aspects of your life private.
Not knocking privacy of course, I just try not to put too much weight on ideology these days. #Bitcoin can and will likely solve our money problem, but that comes with the obvious expectation of KYC on/off ramps and regulation, which is where the majority of the liquidity is.
It’s interesting because it allows for that, but it also allows for impoverished nations + people to participate in the protocol without any sort of requirement like that.
To end this, I will say I am indeed a big fan of #Monero, but I do see it staying as a more niche cryptocurrency, likely for privacy-enthusiasts, the dark-web, whistleblowers, journalists, and political donations, etc.

Wholeheartedly agree. I used to be this way before I stepped aside from Christianity for almost a year, and for me it’s refreshing now because I get to reexamine it with an open mind without all of the noise.

After recent reading and more research, I tend to agree with what Hal Finney’s view of #Bitcoin was as well as Saifedean’s views.
In my opinion, as much as I dislike them, I think complaining about KYC and AML is pointless. People need to stop being idealist and be way more realistic. If Bitcoin is going to be the world reserve currency one day and back global finance, KYC is inevitable and it’s a necessary component to achieve this status and high liquidity.
People tend to get very wrapped up in the cypherpunk ethos and attempt to turn Bitcoin into something it clearly is not. “Cash” clearly does not mean day-to-day payments and was obviously referring to final settlement. Of course layers can be built on Bitcoin for different use cases, but this was not the intended design. The Lightning Network is great but think about scale and practicality.
I cannot help but believe that Bitcoin was designed to solve different problems than what anarchists, libertarians, etc. want it to solve. And the biggest thing for me is that’s okay… The “Bitcoin as digital gold” narrative is very strong and it’s the most revolutionary invention/discovery in centuries. Final settlement + being able to maintain my money and contributed value to society over time is enough for me.
For the people desiring hardcore privacy and wish Bitcoin was different in certain ways to fulfill their Ancap wet dream…… welp, just use #Monero.
Bitcoin and Monero can co-exist because they simply solve different problems. Even #Ethereum has real-world use cases that aim to implement different solutions to different problems. Ethereum doesn’t try to be money, but Bitcoin maxis call anything a shitcoin that isn’t Bitcoin, which to me is an ignorant statement.
I agree Bitcoin is perfect money in the general sense and I want global finance to be anchored to it, but that doesn’t mean every other coin is useless with zero utility.

Practically speaking though, how does someone pay their everyday bills with Monero?
That’s the conversation about Bitcoin that does fascinate me the most. Hal Finney seemed to think it would do just fine as a store of value and eventually leading to “Bitcoin banks,” which is probably likely. I think we are still in the store of value phase, but I am not sure what MoE or UoA m would even look like irl when/if it happens. We can’t seem to get away from fiat ways of thinking, at least I can’t.. it’s all we’ve ever known so I can’t wrap my head around Bitcoin repricing things irl with the $ attached to it. i.e. It’s difficult for me to understand “1 BTC = 1 BTC”

I would rather earn in Bitcoin due to it being inherently deflationary. There’s more I am thinking about and learning at the moment on this, but similar to what Hal Finney said in Bitcoin’s early days, I don’t think it was ever meant to solve privacy or be used for every day transactions (hence the digital gold nickname, which I think is accurate).
I genuinely believe it is perfect sound money and was/is insanely revolutionary, humanity needs the ability to store our labor without being debased. One of the beauties is that you obviously can build on top of it. When it comes to this, I am not sure what this looks like and simply don’t know enough to yet to discuss the ramifications of KYC or non-KYC and the ability to have your stored wealth be spent irl to make a change to your life.
I am a Gen Z’er, as you know. My main concern is my future. I want to study hard, work hard, and be able to save without getting absolutely wrecked by saving in USD, Euros, etc. I am not dismissing privacy when I say these things btw. But I definitely disagree with people when they “Bitcoin failed” if it isn’t used for daily transactions.

I think a great utilization method of #bitcoin & #monero is to hold non-KYC Bitcoin which inevitably increases in purchasing power, and simply swap a portion to Monero whenever you want to make a purchase as opposed to strictly holding Monero. You get the best of both worlds with privacy as well as appreciation in your purchasing power.
This might be obvious and what many people do already, but for some reason it never really clicked for me that this was an option until now.

What confuses me is say you want to make a big sale of Bitcoin in the future to sell a small percentage of your stack for something that will directly benefit you in real life (car, house, etc.) Then how would the Bitcoin be utilized? Thankfully, I am just incredibly lucky to be someone to have papers being processed to obtain a second passport through descent.
Currently, I am building my skills and saving in Bitcoin to make this future happen for me. I would love to be a part of one of the tight-knit Network state communities or something similar where my health, my community, and technology can be prioritized. The American dream was a scam from the beginning and I am beyond excited to work towards something better in the future. What a time to be alive.

Gotcha. Any bank account/app that is used will have your real name (I know you know this) so this is why I’m confused. Are you simply saying to just use one that isn’t your main one? What I’m saying is that with your point, even if you went “bankless” with your main bank then you can just open an account somewhere else

I agree. But I am not shy on this matter though, I love and use Strike. But, I have learned a lot and will continue to do so. I would like to build up a side stack as well via Bisq/RoboSats

Why does it seem like you’re fully anti-Bitcoin these days? I think if we’re being realistic, KYC + public ledger was/is necessary for the purpose of mass adoption and to just have sound money in general as opposed to infinite money printing. These design decisions weren’t an accident, especially since Bitcoin was launched right after the 08 crisis

One thing I have realized recently is that so much amazing privacy tech can be made like a great messaging app or something like Monero etc etc. doesn’t matter what it is, but if I’m the only one even using it and don’t have the people I know in real life using it, it doesn’t even mean much.
Where am I gonna spend #Monero? Who am I going to message on #SimpleX? Most people are average normies or just couldn’t care less about things like this. What does it even matter?
