Carmagnolle diving suit, designed by Alphonse and Theodore Carmagnolle in 1882. It is one of the earliest atmospheric diving suits, designed to withstand immense ocean pressure.
The suit weighs over 830 pounds and features 25 small glass viewports embedded in the helmet for visibility. It is notable for having 22 rolling convolute joints to allow for movement while remaining watertight.
The suit is currently displayed at the Musée National de la Marine in Paris 🇫🇷

Throughout history, the way the Ute people constructed their homes has directly reflected their lifestyle and environment. For the western tribes, the primary dwelling was the wickiup. Kaho" is a traditional surgery performed by Hausa local barbers using horns. It is known as cupping, the process of removing poisonous blood from the body. The poisonous blood which comes out black was said to be "bad blood".
Kaho is the traditional way arthritis is/was treated.

One major challenge for colonial powers in Africa was the difficulty of using horses, which were highly susceptible to tropical diseases, prompting efforts to breed disease-resistant hybrids by crossing zebras with horses, donkeys, and mules at places like this German stud farm. The oldest preserved wooden staircase in Europe (1344-1343 BC) was discovered within Hallstatt salt mines in Upper Austria.
The staircase was part of a vertical shaft system used by Bronze Age miners to transport salt from subterranean galleries. Its location within salt-rich environment contributed to its exceptional preservation, as salt inhibited growth of wood-decaying fungi. The structure remained intact until landslide in 1000 BC buried it, effectively preserving it for over 3,000 years.

This iconic photograph captures the massive ash cloud from the catastrophic 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.....
The photo was taken on May 18, 1980, by Richard Lasher, a Boeing employee who was on his way to ride his dirt bike near Spirit Lake. As the ash cloud rapidly approached, Lasher was forced to abandon his red Ford Pinto and escape on his motorcycle.
The eruption was a lateral blast, considered the most disastrous volcanic eruption in U.S. history.

A traditional tree house built by Korowai people of Papua, Indonesia. These unique dwellings are a form of architectural adaptation to dense rainforest environment.
Houses are constructed using natural materials like timber, vines and palm leaves. They are built high above the ground, sometimes over 40m high, to protect against floods, wild animals, insects, and evil spirits. The height is also used to spot enemies or intruders from afar.

A Russian fisherman named Nikolay Tarasov was fishing in the Dudet River near Tisul in Siberia when his net snagged something that at first looked like an ordinary stone. On closer inspection and after washing off the mud he realised it was a small carved figurine rather than a rock.
Thinking it might be just odd at first he nearly threw it back, but instead took it to the Tisul History Museum.

In 1959, a cement mixer with a full load of cement, wrecked near Winganon, Oklahoma 🇺🇸
By the time a tow truck came to haul it away, all of cement had hardened inside of mixer. Tow truck was not able to remove all wreckage at same time because of weight, and decided to haul only cab/frame and would come back for detached mixer later, which never happened.
Today, 67 years later, it still sits where it fell. Locals have painted it and added "rocket thrusters" to make it look like a space capsule.

The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, launched in 1983, the world's first commercially available handheld cellular phone. It weighed around 1 kg (2.2 lbs) and was nicknamed the "brick phone".
A full charge took 10 hours and provided only 30 minutes of talk time. The launch price was \$3,995, equivalent to over \$12,000 today.

Märket, world's smallest island split between two nations, a 3.3-hectare Baltic islet shared by Sweden and Finland.
The border, originally a straight line from an 1809 treaty, was redrawn in zigzag pattern in 1985. This adjustment was made to ensure a lighthouse, accidentally built on Swedish side in 1885, was placed within Finnish territory, without either country losing land overall.
The island is uninhabited and home to an automated lighthouse, attracting visitors due to its unique history.

Randall Champion was already dead when this photo was taken. He had been electrocuted while working on a utility pole in 1967, his heart stopped mid-shift. His colleague J.D. Thompson, without hesitation, climbed up and gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while both were still strapped to the pole.
The image, later dubbed “The Kiss of Life,” captured a moment of pure instinct and heroism. Champion survived the incident and lived for nearly 40 more years.

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi ruled as Shah, having been given strengthened monarchical powers by the US-UK backed 1953 coup, and he introduced wide-spread social changes, particularly after the 1963 White Revolution. Archaeologists estimate there were roughly 8,000 to 10,000 miles (13,000–16,000 km) of Roman roads built across Roman Britain (Britannia) between the 1st and 4th Centuries AD.
Of these, about 2,000 miles (3,200 km) are still visible, traceable, or form the basis of modern roads today.

Rano Raraku quarry on Easter Island (Rapa Nui) served as principal source of stone for the island’s iconic Moai statues, with roughly 95% of all Moai carved from volcanic tuff extracted at this site.
The quarry contains 887 Moai in various stages of completion, including many partially buried in the ground, providing a vivid record of carving process.
These monumental statues were shaped exclusively with stone tools, known as toki, by the Rapa Nui people between approximately 1400-1650 CE.

These are the real-life outfits doctors would wear to treat plague patients in 1600s...
The eerie beaked masks you see here belonged to plague doctors of 1600s, who worked in Europe during outbreaks of bubonic plague. Their appearance has become iconic, but the design was rooted in medical theories of the time. Long beak was stuffed with herbs, flowers, and spices, things like lavender, cloves or mint, which doctors believed could filter out “miasma,” or bad air, thought to spread disease.

In late 17th Century CE, England, response to Great Fire of London was to make chimneys much narrower. Children were employed to be human chimney sweeps.
Child labor was common in chimney sweeping industry for over 200 years because children were small enough to fit into the narrow flues. Typical age was between 5-10 years of age. Some as young as 4 years old. Master sweeps bought children from orphanages, took homeless young boys or from destitute parents.

A 2,000-year-old Roman gold ring, engraved with what looks like a holographic image, was discovered in tomb of Aebutia Quarta near Rome 🇮🇹

Rhind Mathematical Papyrus, written around 1650 BC, is one of oldest known math texts in human history and shows that ancient Egyptians had a surprisingly advanced understanding of mathematics. It includes methods for solving linear equations, working with fractions, calculating areas and volumes, and using geometric progressions.
The papyrus was purchased by Scottish antiquarian Alexander Henry Rhind in 1858 in Luxor, and parts of it are now housed in the British Museum.

Archaeologists in China uncovered ceramic water pipes in Henan province, dating back more than 4,000 years....
Found at the Pingliangtai site in the Central Plains, these pipes formed a fully engineered drainage system, designed to control flooding and manage water across an ancient settlement.

The Venus of Brassempouy, often called “The Lady with the Hood,” a tiny Ice Age ivory carving discovered in 1892 inside Grotte du Pape (“Pope’s Cave”) in Brassempouy, France.
Carved from mammoth ivory around 25,000 years ago, it is one of oldest realistic human faces ever created. Its distinctive “hood” pattern remains a mystery—possibly stylized hair, a woven garment or an artistic convention.
Today, this small sculpture stands as one of the most iconic examples of early human artistry.

This medieval skull, safeguarded by chain mail, belonged to a courageous warrior who lost his life in the fierce Battle of Visby back in 1361 AD. After the clash, the remains of the fallen, along with their weapons and armor, were laid to rest in a communal grave, making the site a remarkable archaeological treasure.
Today, this artifact resides at the Gotland Museum in Sweden, serving as a solemn tribute to a soldier whose story lives on in history.

Olmec colossal heads are stone representations of human heads sculpted from large basalt boulders. They range in height from 1.17 to 3.4m. Klencke Atlas, first published in 1660 AD, one of the world's largest atlases. Originating in The Netherlands, it is 1.75m tall by 1.9m wide when open, and so heavy the British Library needed 6 people to carry it.
It was presented by a consortium of Dutch sugar merchants, represented by Professor Johannes Klencke, to King Charles II of England in 1660 to mark the occasion of his Restoration to throne.
Klencke Atlas is housed in British Library and contains 41 wall maps.

Modern Reconstruction of the Middle Bronze Age Indo-Iranian (Aryan) man from Kokcha, ancient Khwarazm. Belonging to Tazabagyab culture, an Andronovo-derived horizon, dated to 1600–1200 BC. His face has been sculpturally reconstructed by Taisia Surnina, based directly on the original skull.
The clothing, necklace, and beard shown are based on archaeological parallels from the region, with the final styling remaining genetically and statistically informed.

Apennine Colossus (Colosso dell'Appennino), a large stone statue located in estate of Villa Demidoff in Vaglia, Tuscany, Italy.
This colossal figure, 11m high, was created by Flemish sculptor Giambologna in late 1580s. It is a personification of Apennine Mountains, which are a major mountain range in Italy.
The statue was originally built on grounds of Villa di Pratolino, a Renaissance villa, and later became part of Villa Demidoff estate.

Monteriggioni is one of the best preserved walled Medieval towns in Tuscany, Italy.
It's the typical fortified village that started its life as a castle in the early 13th Century AD, to protect the Sienese from their historical rivals, the Florentines.

This is a traditional women’s dress of Ochagavía, a mountain town in Navarre near French border, 1900s.
For centuries, Navarre was an independent kingdom. It emerged in early Middle Ages and, at its height, included lands on both sides of the Pyrenees. This independence lasted until 1512, when southern portion was conquered by Ferdinand of Aragon and integrated into Spain, while a smaller northern part remained under French influence.

The first known "camper" made by a Scottish man was a horse-drawn touring caravan, the Wanderer, commissioned by Dr. Gordon Stables in 1884. This pioneering vehicle was conceived as a "home on wheels," though it faced challenges with its horses and navigation. The idea was later developed into the first practical caravan, the Eccles Motor Caravan, produced in 1919, and the concept of a camper, or motorhome, evolved over time, with the term "campervan" becoming popular later.

Ceramic figure of a bird goddess on a chariot pulled by water birds, dated 1500-1200 BC. It was discovered by the Danube river at Dupljaja near Dubovac, Banat area, Serbia. She is not attached to the rest of the composition and can be removed and used separately, lavilshy decorated with spirals, solar circles and other ornaments. Resembles later associations of Aphrodite (as great goddess) riding a bird.

This tiny boxwood peapod (10 cm) was carved in 1500 by a North German artist. It opens to reveal little peas, and then those peas open to reveal ten little carved scenes from Genesis.
Now housed at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin.

The earliest known cat door, located at Exeter Cathedral in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧, dates from around 1598 AD. The owners of the cats were paid a penny a week as early as 1305 AD, to help control mice and protect the cathedral from pests.

One of the most beautiful ancient Greek mosaics on the floor of King Philippos II's palace, Vergina, Macedonia - northern Greece 🇬🇷, dating back to the 4th Century BC. It is located in the ancient city of Aigai, the first capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia.
These beautiful floors were made of pebbles and were used to decorate the floor of the palace of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great.

Roman Winged Phallus (1st-2nd Century AD), carved from a piece of bone, found on 1st June 2009, in field walking at Wetheringsett cum Brockford, Suffolk 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧, near the old Roman Road to Caister Saint Edmunds, this type of artifact was often associated with Roman Army (40-400 AD).
These are thought to be protective charms and those with suspension attactments possibly worn as a fertility charm, sold with the PAS report SF-EE7435, which includes line drawings.

This British Motorcycle from 1924 BSA 2 3/4hp Side-Valve Model L. Still uses a Carbide lamp (acetylene gas) for head and tail lights.
The acetylene gas then travels through tubes to the light units where it comes out through a precisely sized orifice and burns to create light.
Motorcycles gained headlamps (and taillamps) from early 1900s (process was invented in 1892), and until late 1920s gas lamps were commonplace.

Menga Dolmen, 5500 year old prehistoric monument in Antequera, Spain 🇪🇸
Built way back in Neolithic or early Bronze Age, around 3700-3200 BC, this place is one of Europe’s biggest megalithic burial sites. What’s really amazing about it is the long corridor that leads to the burial chamber, all made from these gigantic stone slabs that can weigh up to 180 tons each.

This 14th Century AD, door at Exeter Cathedral, UK 🇬🇧, is thought to be the oldest existing cat flap...
A cat was paid a penny each week, to keep down the rats and mice in the north tower, and a cat flap was cut into the door below the astronomical clock to allow the cat to carry out its duties.
Records of payments were entered in the Cathedral archives from 1305-1467 AD, the penny a week being enough to buy food to supplement a heavy diet of rodents.
