Ahhh, good to know!! Thanks! I’ve been a bit rough with them, kept moving them because I’ve been learning about the landscape as I go and the pests! 🐌 The snails/slugs don’t eat the peonies, so I’ve finally settled them in a bed with some other slug proof plants.

I feel like I’m awake inside a movie most of the time. It’s quite surreal. I stopped feeling self conscious of it a long time ago and just enjoy the novelty.

I’ve lived in Germany for nearly four years, and I still don’t speak the language confidently.
Part of that is circumstance. I’m a full-time mum, so I’m not constantly exposed to it. But if I’m honest, there’s another reason; I’ve come to like not fully understanding.
When you don’t speak the language fluently, conversations around you turn into background noise instead of information. I’m not automatically processing every word, tone, or social cue. For someone like me who naturally tunes into everything, that’s a relief.
It feels like “noisy silence.” The world is still loud, but it doesn’t demand my attention in the same way. I can choose when to listen.
There’s also less pressure in social situations. People expect less small talk, fewer interactions. I’m given space by default.
I guess I’ll be fluent eventually, but for now, I’m actually enjoying the peace of not understanding.
As they say, “Ignorance is bliss.” For the first time, I’m aware of it while I’m in it.

Slow progress on the coop but it’s getting there! These are the chicken quarters, the opposite side to the entrance will be the ducks quarters. I’ve utilised the fold down sides of the trailer and left a gap so it’s easy to clean out the floors. Decided to clad the ceiling with old boards instead of OSB as it’s cheaper.

Love using up stuff that’s just lying around, what inspired me to build the coop which is an old broken trailer and the wood from an old deconstructed barn. I’ve got a load of old Apple crates, but I think they might be a little roomy? Will give them a try!

I don’t like the idea of turning parts of myself off or down to stay friends with someone, I prefer to dig harder to find something we have in common. I’m still a part of my community, I volunteer and run a craft event and I love it, we come together to create something, focuses the energy in a more positive way. I just feel like an alien when people start to talk about life in general, so I steer them towards something constructive.

Nearly finished the chicken coop, I reckon a few more night shifts after the kids are in bed. Played Tetris tonight with the insulation and finally finished one side of the cladding. Super happy. Looking forward to welcoming our first tribe in a few weeks!

Well done, I commend your commitment to your children. Most mothers I speak to here are completely unaware that it’s illegal not to send children to school, but also don’t really see it as a problem. We are currently based here in Germany until our youngest turns seven as we have a working multi-generational farm, but the plan is to move between four different countries. For our kids as well, by the time they turn 18, the job market/world will look entirely different. I just don’t see how pieces of paper from institutions will be relevant anymore? I used the wrong word “stateless”…stateless to me is more about being not tied to one country through having multiple passports and being more of a permanent tourist, but in fact it’s the opposite; it means “without passport”. Did you send your children to kindergarten? Here in Germany, the kindergartens are very play-centric, but I’m concerned that when the transition to school begins, they will struggle to leave their friends.

To me, though, the burden of proof is not “why homeschool?” but “why institutionalise children for 13+ years under a centralised system?”
I’m not opting out of education. I’m opting out of institutional schooling.
