@nprofile…8atu Absolutely! Even https://codeberg.org/mcepl/m2crypto/ with packages in all major distributions have really one developer: me. Yes, I had some PRs in the past, but they are really rare.

@nprofile…8atu Absolutely, go through your main GitHub/GitLab/Codeberg account and tell me how many of those projects are one-offs, which will never be updated any more. I have still over 80 projects on https://gitlab.com/users/mcepl/projects and I haven’t used it really for couple of years.

Let me comment on https://blog.codeberg.org/protecting-our-floss-commons-from-llms.html I don't want to get to the issue itself, but I really dislike sentences like “In Frankfurt, data centers already now consume 40% of the local electricity, and demand is rising.” That report (https://www.oeko.de/en/publications/environmental-impacts-of-artificial-intelligence/) is from May 2025, so it is really hard to attribute the rise of energy consumption to LLMs, which were not that prevalent then, and especially not outside of US/China. It seems dishonest to blame LLMs for our already high energy consumption.

Tady vkládáte panu Dvořákovi něco do úst, co neřekl.

That's nonsense: 1) it is not more complicated to start with #Matrix than with #WhatsApp (you just install an app, register and go), 2) simplicity is overrated... if people were that stupid and require it, everybody be on SMS, where you don't have to do anything. 3) in the end what really matters is what your friends use.

All these thoughts are unfortunately completely irrelevant. Whatever I think about #Telegram (or #Signal for that matter) doesn't matter when I don't know almost anybody using it. All my friends, family, and such are on #WhatsApp so that's it for me. I actually use a bridge (by #Element, paid for) from #Matrix, but without that I would either have to use their app or be that strange guy who communicates only via #SMS (as I was for many years).

1. As an employee of #SUSE, I need to note that we actually have one completely European enterprise Linux distribution with over thirty [!] years of experience. We are perfectly ready to serve anybody who wants to switch from any US-centric distro.
2. Even if you don’t want to pay for it, I don’t think #Debian (although SPI is American), or #Ubuntu are exactly slaves to US whims (and I don’t even know what is a domicile of #Arch). And, of course, #openSUSE is gratis as well.

Exactly: a programming language is either like Python (“batteries included”) or it is like C (“do it yourself”; although there is a large stdlib called libc). The first is good for a general scripting, the second one isn’t. Yes, no sense adding file functions to Lua embedded in WoW, but e.g. Neovim (and any other editor like vis) must develop their own stdlib. Thus, “we don’t like you to use Lua for anything smaller than a project large enough for you to develop your own stdlib”.

If there is one thing I started to really dislike in the last couple of months, it is that everybody (from McDonald’s downwards in terms of sleaziness) started to force me to lie, that I would ever return to that choice later. No, I will never give to Ronald McDonald Charity (for reasons), and I will never change my mind about it! Now I see the similar forcing me to lie in FLOSS projects. Ugh!
