Daily random nostr thoughts:
Nostr is the identity and content management layer for the internet.
- These events are verifiable such that you can determine from a signature that it came from a specific pub key. So you can control your identity and all the content that is associated with your identity as well as verify other’s events / content.
Running a Nostr relay is the data ownership layer of the nostr content.
- If you own the relay, while you can’t verifiably tamper the events, you can delete them, however. So you do have some control you can exert over other users content.
- imo, you only own content if you are also running a relay, as you cannot guarantee persistent long time storage otherwise. It does help make your content resistant to censorship though by being able to distribute it to a network of relays.
These layers are parallel and interoperable with other protocols similarly to RSS, SMTP, Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. It could even house metadata about the protocols and networks built on top of said protocols.
Nostr can be used to distribute to other protocols, networks and platforms programmatically.
Due to the simplicity of events, it makes it really easy to gather information that isn’t tied to someone’s government issued ID, maintaining some degree of privacy.
Maybe making it possible to generate enough open data of all kinds to train an open source AI model. Perhaps a path way to monetization for relay operators and reasons to persist data?
IMO, nostr is already inherently a better spec / tech and more secure than something like smtp / email for example. Nostr Id / NIP05 represents a lot more than a direct messaging address. Google reads all of your emails whereas we could use the encryption to secure the content. Service providers could restrict outside users from being able to query anything other than what they are able to produce valid signature for a particular pubkey as authentication.
I could make a case for RSS too, but we’re on the road to adoption and it’s not really practical to make those claims just yet.

I had an amazing time at @npub1dwa…7c52 ! Here's my hackathon project, magstr and blogstr:
The Problem
- Currently, the publication industry requests individuals to write articles by paying them. This is quite costly and risky for the publications if it doesn’t resonate with their users and lead to higher retention and engagement.
- For individuals, the amount is pretty minimal, though, if the publication is the visibility and brand awareness could be worth it.
- Additionally, if the writer says something the publication doesn’t like, they can lose their content, the visibility, backlinking, and more.
… but what if there was a publication platform that could solve these problems?
The Solution
Nostr allows users to publish content to a set of relays and grow their following without requiring a particular platform. They could gain the advantage of the visibility to the users of the platform, censorship resistance, and to take their following with them, along with having a higher upside from being able to receive lightning payments.
The What
- A codebase built on Next.js that is easily deployable to Vercel that uses the nostr network to fetch long-form content events (kind: 30023) and render them in a UI.
- It’s easily customizable by using an environmental variable to set an array of pubkeys.
- You can create a blog out of this if the array only contains one pubkey, your pubkey.
- If you set multiple, you can evolve the UI to become something quite like Bitcoin Magazine.
- The codebase is entirely dynamic and it fetches the article writer’s lightning addresses from their nostr profile metadata.
Why Now
- Community members of Nostr PHX are asking for this.
- Get more of the internet off of massive social platforms and more to their own platforms.
- Community members and organizers that are marketers want to be able to contribute more to the nostr network.
- Disrupt publication incentives and costs.
- Get more communities to use nostr without needing to know Nostr.
- Value 4 value, enabling the users to not have a ceiling on their earnings.
- Empower publishers to easily aggregate nostr content to one place and curate the experience.

I think Nostr eventually replace RSS and Email.
RSS is simple. JSON > XML as a dev.
Email is awful to build for and who wants email providers to be able to read all of their emails?
Encrypted DMs with long form content and a tag to indicate it as an “email” then the app having an email like frontend or client would already be much more superior. There could be a relay that doesn’t allow for querying of events either so then others can’t check who is receiving emails from who. Or better yet, run your own relay that others can’t query to send events to.
It would be a level up in privacy and it wouldn’t matter anymore about using a single provider like Gmail. With nostr ids, you could even change npubs to receive to if you needed to. Wouldn’t be able to decrypt without still having the secret, though.
Interesting to think about.
