For that price you could also consider a battery backup made for computers. I use models similar to https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06VY6FXMM on my servers. Of course they don't have the fancy USB ports, but there are plenty of choices around.
The key consideration is that batteries only last for about 3 years, so make sure you pick a model where the battery can be easily replaced and has a generic equivalent so you're not relying on the manufacturer for continuing support.

I collected mine from ditches along my drive home, and had some given to me from other people's yards. It's just that for a weed, they are incredibly difficult to intentionally grow.
Another plant I collected from ditches was cattails... They are literally everywhere, and yet when I tried moving some to my pond, all that survived were bull rushes, and those were very stubborn to remove once they got going. Maybe I can find some seeds this Fall and try again.

So I *think* the trick is the seeds need to be flooded for a time in the early Spring. I successfully started a whole tray of seeds, and then discovered milkweeds do not survive transplanting the seedlings (maybe a much larger pot would work?). Still not exactly sure how I got lucky with the first one in the ground.
Once you can get one started it will spread, about doubling every year, but it still took mine 4-5 years of flowering before the first seed pod appeared.

You wouldn't believe how many years I have been working to get milkweeds started growing next to my backyard pond even when collecting seed pods from multiple locations over the years. But some of them finally took hold a few years back, and after several years they finally produced their own seed pods last year. This year I have about a dozen plants which already flowered, now I'm just waiting for the monarchs to discover them...

It does bode well for the quality of the soil though. Getting some free mycelium in the bag is a huge bonus (especially if this is heading for a garden), you just have to try to keep it moist.

This is the thing I don't understand... WHY are cities building bike paths right along the side of roads and highways? They're taking an already dangerous situation and giving cyclists a false sense of "security" (I'm safe if I stay in my lane). All this wasted money just to make motorists more frustrated and all they have to show for it is basically a shoulder on the street.

If you have a chance, find a weather loop for the Cheyenne area right now (leading up to 8pm MDT). Massive storm pounding the city, but the way it is gyrating makes it look like jello, and worries me that they might be seeing some tornado-type weather.
Meanwhile, only 1/16" of rain here but another storm is just starting to blow across so I'm hopeful to see a good dump. And of course chances are very high for the next 24 hours for up to 1.25 inches. Wouldn't that be great?

I saw some discussion last week that forecasters were surprised that last storm just completely missed us. Hope this makes up for it.
That still seems overly-optimistic though. Those are liquid totals, not snow totals? With as dry as it is, if we actually saw 2" of rain I think we'd be seeing some major flooding.

Aww man, I wish my plants were that big already! I've been leaving the lid off the seed trays except for the nights we get close to freezing, but they're still only a couple inches tall.

Seeing the same kind of thing in Longmont. My temperature readings absolutely flat-lined at 24 degrees from 9:30pm until 8:30, which was really weird in itself. The for the next couple hours it just had a little bubble to 29 degrees before shooting up to 50. It's only supposed to reach 57 here today, but wow it wouldn't surprise me if we overshot it.

I'm still trying to figure out how half a pan of whole potatoes turns into 3/4 pan of diced potatoes. Diced should have taken LESS space??? No wonder I always end up making way more than anticipated.

Same here, even looking directly at my neighbor's porch lights they are plainly visible, but of course the cell phone camera brings out the colors so much better. I have a pile of pics on my phone, I'll get them moved over to my computer tomorrow and post a couple.

Any discs I've burned lately were for installing an OS on servers that didn't like my USB keys for whatever reason, and I just write the OS info with a sharpie on them. I think the only time I made real labels was when I was burning DVDs with video files.

Huh I don't remember that style! I have one still sitting on my desk that was a spring-loaded device but performed the same function.
It's crazy how many devices we have that were only useful for a short period of time to perform a specific action, then become obsolete despite being good at their task. Mine just sits here collecting dust with newer items stacked on top of it.

At least we haven't had many of these huge swing days this season. It's already bad enough when the high temps are 60 one day and 90 the next, but getting these swings in a single day is hard on the system (no wonder my knees are hurting!).

It swung from 28° to 76° here today, at least the wind isn't quite as bad as yesterday. My tomato plants survived but I just saw the forecast for the week of Halloween could dip down to 21°... Yeah I'll believe it when we're only a couple days away, I know the forecast this time of year is utterly worthless.

Farm bankruptcies up to July already exceeded the total bankruptcies for the entire year of 2024. Seasonal crops are now coming in and sales to foreign countries are being blocked by Trump admin policies, so expect those numbers to climb rapidly in the coming months.

I saw a sworn declaration by ICE on the subject this morning, but not finding it now. However your statement is backed up by this news article that ICE knew MOST of the 'deportees' did not have any criminal history, which destroys the allegation that they were shipping off violent gang members. ICE maintains that all of them were gang members despite any evidence other than "you have tattoos".

I've been looking at Apple][ stuff lately and read that it's dangerous to try and directly read old floppies because the magnetic coating can be stripped off due to age. Anyone in this thread know more about this? My old disks have had no special care but I live in a low-humidity area (Colorado), so maybe I could get lucky?

The pink oysters are dead-easy to cultivate. The easiest for me was popcorn kernels (boil, then simmer for 10-15 minutes while stirring until you can easily split a kernel with your fingernail. Dry on towel for a couple hours). Load jars about half full then pressure-cook to sterilize. I did my fruiting on straw. Biggest issue was trying to keep enough humidity, half my batches came out stunted so I'm still working on that part.

I did some pink and blue oysters last year, but had too much going on this Summer to try a new crop. Next year I'll be ready to go again.
