i seem to remember some of the weird high-contrast stuff (for, like, slides of diagrams and other specialty purposes) i used to play with had odd (but not ortho) responses… though i’d be hard-pressed to come up with details. but ultimately, i think you kind of answered yourself by the fact that learning color filters was just a part of the art, and keeping the response relatively flat and predictable meant the artists maintained that control.

i don’t think anyone knows, and that’s the ominous part 😅 they recently made an announcement that was just kind of like ‘big things are coming’ with no info and at the same time pulled the ability to purchase any new licenses. so folks are rightfully kinda freaked out ‘cause y’know… when, in recent history, has that been a ~good~ omen in tech?

if memory serves, gnome chess itself doesn’t come with engines, so i would be curious what your distro is bundling… i don’t know why they wouldn’t just dump stockfish in, but even gnu chess is capable of rather high elo play… guessing the interface is just telling the engine to play at a low level and not really adjusting elo according to your wins?

having shared an egregious amount of personal data with a parking middleman and their unknown quantity of business partners, i stare at the back of my phone, smiling. i wish my phone always looked like this. no apps. no onerous privacy policies. no screen. i see a quarter on the ground and snap back to those halcyon days where a parking meter didn’t come with a terms of service agreement.

it helped that you could grab a book like ‘80 programs to manage your personal finance in the basic language’ etc. with a clear path of learning code to accomplish something personally useful instead of just coding for the sake of slogging through some incomprehensible corporate bullshit. a whole ecosystem of ‘computer as universal tool’ vs. subscribing to the least worst software package on the market etc.

any time an artist i’m actively paying attention to releases one, i’ll watch it once i’m aware of it. often i become aware because of youtube recommending them, and i’ll typically set aside a bit of time to then watch some new stuff as well as some known faves. i definitely miss the mtv/vh1 era, but i’m thrilled that the artform hasn’t died out!

mars volta - _frances the mute_ comes to mind as another good example of locked-groove runout loops
but i’d mostly feel remiss seeing this conversation and not mentioning rrr-100 and rrr-500 from rrrecords. 100/500 artists respectively creating as many loops on vinyl. essentially random what you’d hear on any given play. not easy listening, but i love these releases because they’re exploiting a uniqueness of the medium.

yeah, i think building up from csv makes a lot of sense!
re: headers, prioritizing cells instead of rows is wiser, or at the very least a mechanism to declare a column as well.
a typical default in a screen reader is to announce the column header any time you move the screen reader’s ‘cursor’ to a new column, and same with rows… can be quite easy to get lost without those relationships present.
but yeah, it is definitely not an insurmountable problem

i missed your earlier suggestion, apologies on that!
screen readers have a variety of setting levels for various special characters. defaults tend to be verbose, which could certainly be an issue… but the big one is having an actual structure so the screen reader knows how to navigate it and folks can move cell-to-cell quickly, get relevant header info quickly, etc.
so yeah, any solution where the structure of the table is actually communicated to the screen reader is viable.

doing tables this way is, unfortunately, an accessibility nightmare, and i think accessibility is one place we shouldn’t be looking backward from the modern web.
now, if such a method became standardized in a way that clients would be able to properly translate the structure for a screen reader, that’d be peachy.
