yeah Lifeboaters are pretty despicable people, no thanks.
It's the wrong approach for individuals -- you might be able to manage an off grid power situation but you're still dependent on the rest of society, full stop. You just think you can save yourself and not have to help build a resilient society for everyone.

now imagine this happening everywhere... imagine the mindset shift it would create... imagine how radically it would improve people's lives, all while still existing side-by-side with capitalism (for now). I have to remind people a lot that rugged individualism is not the solution -- community resilience is -- because the automatic response is to want to go off grid and be "independent".
Which is not possible and the wrong approach... but it's an impulse that will (for once) move people closer to the right approach...

Remember when the atomic clock stopped working recently because of a power outage and their backup generator failed.
ME: why didn't they use a more reliable backup for something so important?
Them: well they had a backup generator!
ME: solar + batteries is way more reliable than a machine with a hundred parts that relies on gas.
This is a simple fact that's permeating people's brains more widely now.

I run a bookclub & know people who run others--the books we pick have nothing to do with ratings & "professional" reviews
My library allows 3 suggestions a month, this is true for any patron, and I make suggestions all the time and they take all different kinds of stuff, some of which are MY books, some other indies. I ask my readers to request my books at libraries all the time.
You can believe the algos are all powerful... or you can go see what people are actually doing.

libraries, bookclubs, friend recommendations... "word of mouth" has ALWAYS been the PRIME way people discovered books, that predates all the tech, continued through all the tech and now that the tech is EXTRA shitty, it's coming back.

Ex: three books I have on hold at the library: one I found on a blog post about romantasies, one I've been meaning to read forever, and one was cited in another book

ok, but stick with me here... is it really? How did you find your last book?
In the early days of indie publishing, algos were HUGE in determining visibility -- because they actually worked. They surface popular books, you could do search, etc. Now it's all polluted with pay-to-play and controlled by the tech giants.
But is it how readers actually find books? I would argue actually no.
Caveat: Tiktok is for sure a huge way people discover books now, but not the only one...

I will never regret my early decision to reject AI.
I was forced to make that decision when chatGPT was barely out of the box: an editor had accepted my first story for publication at an actual legit SFF magazine but paired my story with an AI image made from Midjourney. I had to make a decision — do I let this go, for my own benefit, despite my fellow artists already besieged by AI?
No. (luckily, the editor was willing to change it to human art)

My kid (who is not a big reader) informs me that they've started a weekly reading club with their friend where they go to a coffee shop that looks like a library and they sit together and read silently. 😍 📖
I hear stuff like this and I think about how people are actively choosing to live differently, in ways that build connection and fill their souls, and I think "this is how it happens, one small change at a time."

btw this tidbit is INFURIATING
"There are 482,460 works in the Works List; so far, the Settlement Administrator has received a total of 56,798 claims for 161,691 works, which is almost exactly one-third of the total. There have only been 86 opt outs covering 208 works."
The "Works List" is the list of works eligible to make claims. Again... I had 97 works stolen but only 40 were "eligible to make claims".

Welp, submitted my claims to the class action lawsuit against a single AI company (even though they all stole the books) for 40 books stolen (even though 97 were actually stolen but many got excluded for reasons that still make me 😡).
So many authors had books stolen and yet can't file claims. So many companies are profiting from the theft and stealing more every day. Even this settlement is just a slap on the wrist.
Fuck AI corps forever.

A reader asked "How can I find good, human-made books?"
I'm going to counter the AI-slop by recommending more books that I love — ones I read, ones my friends write, ones I know are human art fighting to exist in an AI-slop world.
Don't look to algos to tell you what to read: ask your friends, go back to authors you love and see what they recommend, find real humans talking about real books. That's how books have always been found, before the algos colonized our info spaces.

I'm not an anarchist but my #solarpunk ideals overlap a lot in the sense of building community and networks of care outside of capitalism.
Some places are starting to do this. Scotland just passed a "community wealth building" initiative that's based, ironically enough, on Cleveland OH's case example of reinvesting in their own community. "Spend local" but taken further.

and you HAVE to drill that in, because as much as some folks like to insist that everyone is intrinsically terrible, we are not. People are intrinsically socially animals for whom cooperation is literally our superpower... and that relies on empathy and compassion to work. It takes a lot to destroy that in us.

I've been saying America has to choose to be better... we have to decide this brutality isn't what we want. And that's a deeply unpopular stance because people want it to be easy, better messaging or the right candidate, and not wholesale cultural change because that's "hard"...

The fact that Haitian immigrants have measurably *helped* a predominantly conservative struggling town get back on its feet and have some glimmer of economic prosperity is something that absolutely cannot be tolerated... especially if it allows some "good" racist content of ICE beating up on Black people to be generated in a place (they expect) no white people will fight back.
Springfield really needs to fight them.

Pittsburgh's Creative Reuse store is a WONDER. I've wanted to get here for well over a year, with donations and to shop, and finally managed it.
The concept: people donate anything on their "want" list from fabric to old slides and folks buy them at very low prices.

After extensively writing short stories and novels and publishing a couple collections of short stories, I can definitively tell you that novels sell more — a lot more.
But that doesn't mean you should only write novels.
I'm probably going to publish some short story collections soon — I want the stories out there regardless of whether they "sell".
If you're only focused on the best selling fiction model... it's novels.

complain to libby — leave them a comment through the app if you still have that option — tell them you, as a reader, do not want them using AI for all the reasons. Then tell your library you're unhappy about it. Believe me, these messages will have impact. If we get enough backlash, Libby might have to walk it back. If not, and libraries know their patrons are unhappy, they will look for alternatives.

Also: if you can't find publishers for your radical stories (or want to get it out faster with more control), please consider self-publishing. I was in the first wave of selfpub authors 15 YEARS ago—anyone who sneers at selfpub is very behind the times.
