Yesterday, I took an InterCity from Ventimiglia to Milan. Nothing out of the ordinary, but nice as usual - pleasantly bland, I might say. I added a short video of the Italian Riviera, but the window was dusty on the outside.

Between Innsbruck and Verona, we got the usual new Austrian RailJet that goes from Munich to Bologna/Venice. The seats make you think about the Business and First Class from Qatar Airways, it is what it is. But, the Quiet Zone, doesn't mean what you think it means when 50% is occupied by Italians. So, yeah, cheers Italy! 🥂

A few days ago, we took the Vienna to Bregenz RailJet from ÖBB to reach Innsbruck. Due to some changes, we received a free upgrade to the 1st class, right next to the restaurant, with wonderful seats for longer journeys. It was too early for us to get crazy with the draft beer, since it was 6:30 in the morning, but it seemed we were the only ones with this specific opinion, tho we were also the only ones with a kid.
As a bonus, the weather was all over the place, which made the trip even nicer.

SNCF has a new offer that ends on the 23rd, for travelling between May 4 and July 2.
Between Paris and Germany (Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Mannheim, and Karlsruhe) for €39 isn't bad, but it's a shame not to include the Munich route. Nonetheless, someone might find it useful.

Good thing I waited a little longer to write about the Espresso Riviera summer train (Rome, Italy, to Marseille, France) because it seems to be cancelled for now. It was announced to have two trains a week, instead of the usual one, but something happened related to the Ventimiglia border crossing. Anyways...
Next week I'll start a new train trip (Austria - Italy - France - Italy - Austria) and I'll take as many pictures and videos as I can. At least the first half is before the Easter holiday, so hopefully the trains will be emptier than usual, and I'll be able to picture the interiors too.

Ok, here's the booking procedure from the ÖBB app/website.
While you can travel from €49,90 in the 2nd class, I recommend at least once the 1st class Panorama Car. You have 23 intermediary stops, on a gorgeous route, but you can split it if those 9:31h are too much. It can also be taken from other stations, as I might give it a first try on the Innsbruck to Graz section.
Anyway, back to the reservation. Select 1st class, click on "Seat reservation", then choose from "Select a coach" the Panorama car 1st class, and then the preferred seat if that's the case. Ticket + reservation, €82,90.

I found out only recently that there's a Swiss panoramic option on Austria's territory but with almost no details. Now I found this video and the mystery is solved.

It's a Swiss SBB train operated in partnership with the Austrian ÖBB, called Eurocity 164 "Transalpin", from Graz, Austria, to Zürich, Switzerland. It doesn't pass through Vienna, and that's the reason it represented a total enigma.
This is not my video, but it is from Landeck (Tirol), Austria, and I'll come back with more details about the route and booking in the next few days.

The Austrian CAT (City Airport Train) that connects Vienna's Airport to the city centre, launched an ad and will have a refresher next year. If you land in Vienna, it's a direct 16-minute trip to the city centre, with a train every 30 minutes, and you should definitely try it.

For some reason, the quoted post for the route can't be seen in Amethyst, only in Primal, so here's a copy/paste.
As I mentioned in my introduction yesterday, the Menton Lemon Festival (Fête du Citron) takes place on the French Riviera from February 14 to March 1. I will present the trip with Vienna as the starting point, tho I can offer alternative routes if you are interested. We travel as a family of two adults and one child but I will show the price for a single adult too.
The sample journey starts on February 11, travelling by ÖBB (Austrian railway), and the first step is getting to Venice. This leg is a little long for travelling with kids, but the hours are comfortable, since it begins at 08:53 and the arrival time in Venetia Mestre is 15:56, after 7h3m. If it's too long, you can split it into two parts, and I wholeheartedly recommend spending a day in Graz, which might be my favourite city in Austria.
The price for this leg is €31,30 for an adult, with seat reservation included, or €62,60 for the whole family, in my case. It's also the same price for travelling with two kids, btw.
The train has one more stop in Venetia Santa Lucia if it's more to your taste.
This route passes through the Semmering Railway in the mountains, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. No matter what you're looking for, this route offers a lot of value for the price.
The next day, we'll travel from Venetia Mestre to Ventimiglia, at the French border, with a stop in Milano Centrale.
The first leg begins at 7:30 and we'll arrive at 9:45 in the beautiful Milano Centrale, after 2h15m with Frecciarossa, the Italian top train, so to speak. You can find anything you need in the building, even the coffee vending machines have a great espresso for €1,50.
After a break of 1h25m, at 11:10, you'll begin a 3h44m journey, and arrive in Ventimiglia at 14:54, with a very nice InterCity train, that travels by the beautiful Italian Riviera.
This journey costs €89,20 per family, or €41,80 for a single adult. The seats are assigned automatically but you can pay a little extra if you want specific places. We always received table seats without paying extra, but it might be different if you travel single. Trenitalia (Italian Railways) has very attractive pricing for families, but it usually needs booking at least two or three weeks in advance. For Trenitalia, you can buy vouchers with Sats from Bitrefill.
From Ventimiglia, there are minimum two trains every hour, with the French TER, and it takes around 18 minutes for €5 (single or as a family, same price). No seats assigned, you sit wherever you want.
The total for trains, one way, is €109,40 for an adult, or €156,80 for a family.
With the same TER train, you can have day trips to Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Grasse, and Monte Carlo. I also recommend a few hours back in Ventimiglia, where the farmers' market (very close to the train station) is excellent for a visit. For the French trains it's better to have the SNCF app because, besides convenience, it offers reduced prices as a group, which doesn't happen with the (hard to use) ticketing machine.

From December, Italy and Germany will be linked by direct high-speed Frecciarossa trains, between Rome & Milan to Munich. It's possible because of a partnership between Trenitalia, Deutsche Bahn and Österreichische Bundesbahnen (because it has to pass through Austria).
Milan <-> Munich ~6:30h
Rome <-> Munich ~8:30h
Future plans include extensions to Berlin and Naples by 2028, and there are discussions for Italy to Vienna too, but nothing concrete yet.

Jack, I like a spy story with sabotage and whatnot as much as the next person, or even an incompetence story, but there's a time and a place for that (see my last post for a good place). The truth is that I/we don't know, at least not yet. The French Riviera to Vienna, day 3
For the last segment of our return home, we had a 4:23h trip with the Austrian RailJet. Wonderful as usual, and probably my favourite train. As previously stated, I was interested in the Udine to Vienna segment because of the completion of the new Koralm Railway, and I'll write more in a future post. For now, only a few pictures from the Udine train station.

I had two nice short trips with the Viennese S-Bahn. When I moved to Austria, this was the train that made me love trains. 🤷

Because "you live, you learn", I discovered the budget version for the Bernina route, from Milan. 😂 While the Bernina Express goes from Chur or St. Moritz (Switzerland) to Tirano (Italy), I found a two-segment trip, from Milan to St. Moritz, with a change in Tirano. So the Tirano to St. Moritz is the reason for this, but way cheaper.
I searched on Omio for February 12.
