I think this is literally not one of The Problems With D&D if you are sitting down to play D&D because you like D&D, is the thing? qua play, there is nothing wrong with an extended, fun mechanical execution on an interestingly-unwise decision
but **qua narrative experience for a watcher,** I don't really get to have the fun the players are having and it's flattened down to "bad pacing"

the problem with D&D actual play shows, qua narrative experience for the watcher, is that combat takes forever whether it feels meaningful to the story or not.
so sometimes the PCs make what, to me, feels like a clear mistake from a story perspective — starting a fight to the death with NPCs it would probably have been better to talk to, for example —
and the process of executing on that mistake takes literally an hour in which nothing meaningfully happens besides "they continue doubling down"
