This is called mission creep: installing surveillance for one reason and using it for another. Most high tech police surveillance and a lot of smart city tech experiences mission creep specifically around increased surveillance and other police uses.
When cities approve these technologies, they aren’t aware of all the possible future uses, they’re often making a decision to install them based on a specific use.

Predictive policing is a perfect example of this.
It is enticing for police and politicians because it *seems* like a fair solution to the problems of biased discretionary policing and violent crime.
However if you take a look inside, it amplifies the problems of unequal policing while doing nothing to tackle the root causes of crime. An open source, publicly owned, or “algorithmically fair” redesign would just perpetuate the idea that tech solutions solve social problems.

Last night I finished the best book I have read in a while: Cursed Daughter by Oyinkan Braithwaite, the same author as My Sister, The Serial Killer.
It tells the story of a family of cursed women. It bounces between narratives about a woman who dies by suicide on the same day that another woman is born. The latter is haunted by the former, her family raising her as if she is the reincarnation of the woman who died.

I appreciate all the cis dudes who have for years supported women and other marginalized people in tech because it was one of the only things that kept me feeling like we weren’t being 100% gaslit. Speaking up matters.

The tech industry radicalized me through assumptions of my skillset, hacker news opinion posts, Twitter pile ons, men at conferences realizing I was one of the only women and asking where the line was to have sex with me, tech swag that was literally women’s underwear, BDFLs being praised for their misogyny, conference talks celebrating the bro club, and all the men who asked why we were so “sensitive” about this stuff.
It was exhausting. Creating a space for marginalized people healed me.

While my experience isn’t the same as this woman, I absolutely feel it. Everything is an uphill battle (and it’s worse if you’re multiply marginalized!) and every issue makes you feel like it is all your fault.
The tech industry has not made the kind of progress I had hoped when I started doing dei activism 15+ years ago.
