I still feel cheated, nearly half a century after achieving nominal adulthood, that the incontrovertible knowledge,

I grew up with the expectation that I would be endowed with these things on my 18th birthday, as the adults surrounding me so frequently intimated they had been. To quote that old sportsball expression:

I like to keep bulky gardening supplies in the the sort of plastic open-topped cylindrical vessels most commonly sold in 5 gallon size (although I also use 3.5-, 2-, & 1-gallon variations), & I have a sort of a personal page on Amazon where I keep track of sources, prices, etc. for all my preferred sizes and colors.
I call it my “Bucket List.”

Case in point: I have passed driver's license exams in California (where the power outage & intersection-blocking waymos currently are), Oregon, and Washington state.
I *think* that non-functioning traffic lights are to be treated as 4-way stops in all three states, but I just realized I don't know for sure about any of them (including Washington, where I & my current driver's license are).

*TBF: to solve this problem, one would first have to establish what the correct response is to the chaotic behavior of humans when confronted with non-working traffic lights. In order to do that, one might first have to address the problem of a correct response to the chaotic behavior of humans in general. AFAIK, that has never yet been successfully done.

Maybe an interesting problem for IT people:
How do you program a self-driving vehicle to respond correctly to the chaotic behavior of humans when confronted with non-working traffic lights?
Many/most human drivers won't know/remember they're meant to treat non-working traffic lights as 4-way stops; and human response even to traditional, long-established 4-way stops can be quite chaotic.
If you figure this out, please don't share your work with any driverless car companies. That sort of thing only encourages them.

There is nothing like standing in a cool stream in a hot day, and scooping up cool stream water in your cupped hands to plunge your face into and drink.
And I will never do that again.
But I can't imagine being stranded on a riverbank and not finding a way to drink the water. If my conventional water purification methods were missing or had failed, I can see myself trying to rig up a filter from sand &/or charcoal layered into a bandana or something.
I can also see myself drinking sandy, charcoal-ey water from the failed experiment & hoping fervently for the best.

This is almost all fun & funny. The not fun & funny part:
My sister is a recovering alcoholic. Drinking a can of this would end seven hard-won years of sobriety; and could easily put our whole family back into the world of lies, DUIs, and chaos we were in seven years ago.
It's very rare, but it's possible to be allergic to alcohol, or to have alcohol intolerance. My mom was alcohol intolerant. Drinking a can of this would have made her violently ill; or could have killed her if she'd managed to down enough of it.
*Mom died of alcohol-unrelated causes.
**Alcohol intolerance is genetic, & alcoholism seems to be genetically linked. One of Mom's uncles was also a notorious alcoholic. We're a fun family.

Holy cow - that looks exactly like what my family used on our Christmas tree for a few years in the late 1960's. Ours was marketed under the name "Angel Hair."
It may have been healthier than the lead tinsel it replaced, but it was not nearly so pretty- there's genuinely nothing like the drape and gentle sheen of lead tinsel. My mom didn't buy the "Angel Hair" out of preference - the tinsel was unavailable because so much lead was needed for bombs to drop on Vietnam.*
It was only 2 or 3 years until PVC plastic tinsel strips became available, and our trees could be nearly as pretty again.
*The moment Mom told 5-yo me that marks the beginning of my (nearly) life-long anti-war convictions.

I was often up late with no supervision. I'd always get drawn in by the theme song, but was too young to really appreciate most of the segments.

Have you ever tried to follow a high-protein, low fat diet (whether to lose weight or for some other reason)?
For me, it takes just a couple of weeks before I start craving fat. Removing the skin from a freshly baked piece of chicken has sometimes felt like the hardest thing I've ever done.
An adult woman needs about 3 teaspoons (14.7ml) of fat daily to avoid malnutrition; and most low-fat diets recommend a maximum of 5 teaspoons (24.5ml) daily (both amounts are larger for guys, but I've never had a reason to memorize that info). I have dieted a lot over the years; and, despite working very hard at cutting out fat, seldom ended a day having consumed less than 4.5 teaspoons (about 18.5 ml) of fat. And when I did, I was not just hungry- I was bug-eyed crazy hungry.

Operating the clutch in a car with a manual transmission. That was so hard to learn. At first it seemed impossible, and when I finally did it, effectively but badly, I thought I’d never get much better.
Years later I realized that I did it probably hundreds of times a week, all smooth and sweet, without even giving it a conscious thought.

1. I think line drying & the sterilizing effect of solar radiation helped some. (Plus commercial diaper services, who could applies economies of scale to all the boiling & leaching required, where available & when affordable.)
2. A lot of people used to die from diptheria. Just, (perhaps) fortunately, not all.

My grandparents were farmers who had to live on what they could grow and the money a few cash crops brought in. One year, grandpa's wheat crop failed and he had to sell what little he had and buy millet, which was cheaper. The family lived all winter on millet and whatever Grandma had canned & preserved from that year's garden. It. Was. Bad.
I have plenty more stories that Mom told me about being hungry and having nothing. But the tl;dr: here is that pouring your blood, sweat, & physical wellbeing into a piece of land and hoping that land will return enough to sustain you is a mug's game.
Don't get me wrong: home gardens, and small farmsteads, are great. But I have never known a small family farm to yield a comfortable "first world" lifestyle without some sort of outside income.

I have known three homeless people very well. One was an addict whose hard-won recovery lapsed when they lost their housing. Another had been convicted of a non-violent offense. One was just a very unlucky guy.
None were violent.
The most destructive addict have ever known was a professionally employed homeowner & taxpayer.
The most violent person I've ever known was a highly respected figure in their pacifist religious community.
People are complex.

I remember being 5, maybe 6 years old; and my excitement & relief & trepidation at standing in a long line of kids to get my polio vaccine (this would have been in the late 1960s). Excitement and relief that I would get this shot and be free from the risk of contracting polio, which I already knew enough about to know was horrible. Trepidation at facing the needle; but because I was a Big Girl about shots even then, but I'm still not all *that* Big Girl about them.
And then the "shot" turned out to be a sugar cube! That was a pretty great day in 6-year-old-me life.

I've known a couple sociopaths (& a fair few bullies).
& I don't know about the problem of being forced to deal with themselves- I'm not sure there's any provocation that will force a sociopath to do that- but they *do not like it* when people (ie, the victims) threaten to deprive them of victims. That makes them fight like cornered snakes.
Because a sociopath without victims is really just someone alone in a cave. And a person alone in a cave, being of no use to a sociopath, therefore does not exist.

I think that 4000 liters includes water used to for crops & livestock, for maintenance of fallow & natural vegetation, & for percolation through soil as groundwater. IIRC, the writers might have been off to say that the amount of water needed globally for direct human needs, plus proper function of agricultural systems & the global environment, is "x" amount; and that dividing that "x" amount by the current population of the globe works out to 4000 liters/day.

Yeah, in the 1970s, it was newly-emigrated Vietnamese refugees who were being accused of stealing pets to kill for food. I've also heard this alleged against Chinese & Korean immigrants. I'll bet it's a slur as old as the practice of keeping pets & other livestock not intended for consumption.
