There’s nothing “weird” about it.
Decentralisation comes with clear drawbacks in the marketplace. Nostr may be superior technically, in almost EVERY way, but there is no coordinated communications effort.
I posted about this two weeks ago, and half the responses were: “oh you’re too bearish on Nostr” or “look at all the cool tech we’re building”.
And that’s precisely my point. The focus has ALL been on the tech (and rightly so). But my entire argument was that the gaze needs to begin to shift towards communications & go to market. There’s no point building the coolest car if nobody knows about it.
Unfortunately, I don’t know if the @npub10pe…n34f people agree with this (they seem to be the only org funding collective initiatives). They just ignored the post despite tagging them.
Either OpenSats needs to fund some marketing efforts, or these efforts ultimately come down to the businesses building on Nostr. The best option would be BOTH.
I have some other ideas. I’ll DM you and see what you think.
In the meantime, GOLDEN opportunities like this are being completely missed or just not taken advantage of. Nostr should’ve grown by a million users this week, not fucking Blue Sky.

I spoke about this last week.
The benefit of decentralisation comes with some drawbacks backs. Coordination around comms being one.
Anyway. I expect more of this shit to happen in the coming years; so we’ll have more chances.
Perhaps another approach is at the company/product level, not product. Much easier to have a message from Primal or Satlantis than it is from “Nostr”.
Extrapolating that out…The more companies / products we have building/built ON Nostr, the more they can go to market with a clear message (individually).
Each message appeals to different groups of people, but ultimately they each find their way to Nostr.

An overwhelmingly large percentage of the Brazilian population literally LIVE on WhatsApp and IG. I’m not just talking their friends, and scrolling. I mean this is how almost EVERY business runs. They don’t have websites down here. They build their entire digital presences on those two apps.
If Zuckerberg’s transformation is real (dunno if I’m convinced, but who knows - crazier things have happened) and he allows for the kind of content X allowed to spread in Brazil, this Alexandre monkey would be STUCK.
There’s no WAY he could shut access to that down, without the entire country stopping. Literally nothing would work.

This is a GREAT moment for Nostr, but we’ve still got a loooooong way to go before the network and the apps on it are robust.
In fact, similar to Wikileaks in the early days, we probably don’t want to draw too much attention right now to Nostr apps bc while the protocol itself is hard to censor, as was just seen, it’s very easy to censor an app.
Granted, it’s a bit like playing wackamole with Nostr, but once again, we’re not there yet. There probably needs to be 10x more *really good* apps, before we could even hope to sustain a forced shutdown in any country for that matter.

Last week I posted about "Nostr struggling" and while there were many good responses, it seems to me that a bunch of people misunderstood my premise.
I'm going to clear that up here and expand on the idea a little further.
First of all, I'm a Nostr bull. I'm sold, and I know how necessary this is. I'm still recruiting souls from twitter:

Secondly, I know that Nostr is SUPERIOR, technically speaking - and while the apps might not be as smooth, and some of the UX might be buggy, the substrate were working with is fundamentally better than the status quo.
@npub1wmr…g240 did a fantastic job of explaining that at the recent @npub1nst…rg5l conference (I suggest everyone watch that if they haven't - and I'm still bummed I couldn't make it).
There are so many NIPs, and so much tech shit going on, that nobody else stands a chance really. Elon might have cool AI, but we have @npub1l2v…ajft that can produce more prototypes than all the AIs in the world, combined.
That being said, my reference to "struggling" was not about the technical side of things. It was about messaging & go to market.
I speak to people every day about Nostr. I live in Brazil right now and travel on a regular basis to at least 10 countries each year. When I speak to people, they don't really care so much about censorship resistance, or Bitcoin (interestingly enough, two things Rabble also mentioned in his talk).
What they want is a place to connect, that's COOL.
And that's a VERY HARD thing to do.
@npub1sg6…f63m and the guys did it with Twitter early on, and so did the Instagram founders - but for every one "hit" - there are another 1000 well built flops which people just didn't find "cool."
Right now, the messaging is more doom, than bloom. More "you need this bc government gonna get you", and less "this is where the cool kids are at".
Now...I understand that this is gonna take time. All good things do. But if we're going to attract more people, the conversation needs to evolve.
I wrote a piece a little while back called "Social as a Service" and framed Nostr more as this substrate for a Universe of new applications. Once again, Rabble echoed this in his talk and leaned into the "Social Protocol" angle.
I personally find this more compelling. More white-pill, and more appealing for the purposes of growing a network. People need to be pulled, not pushed. The latter can work in bursts here and there (as we've seen this week since the Telegram debacle), but it's not sustainable growth.
@npub1a2c…w83a has been doing really good work with her framing, and I think her 80% bloom / 20% doom approach is a good one.

Thinking out aloud, maybe we just need more angles. I guess the Bitcoin people are still going to be attracted by "government gonna get you" - and we're FAR from saturation in that dimension. So maybe the right approach is the have that conversation with THEM...but a very different conversation with others.
Ultimately, I hope to see more go-to-market initiatives that are user-oriented, and get people excited about Nostr. We saw that at the Nostr booth @npub167n…zu3r that @npub18am…p424 kicked off, and that @npub1hz5…tysa is now working on.
We've got some plans for later this year at a few conferences as we unveil @npub15xd…t3l3
I know @npub1utx…50e8 and @fiatjaf are doing some podcast stuff, which is excellent. Also @npub1693…4j0c is doing a Nostr book.
I'm starting to repeat some of what I said last week, so I'll stop here.
Ultimately the point is this:
Nostr is not struggling "technically" speaking.
But it's not yet found a compelling enough SPACE in people's minds, outside of the Bitcoin community. And it's not found a narrative yet that's compelling, beyond the "government gonna get you / big tech gonna ban you".
When we find that, I expect things to really begin taking off.

Typical government bureaucracy, something that should’ve taken a couple weeks has dragged on for months, and I’m still waiting for a simple document, without which if I left for Riga, would’ve meant I had to start the ENTIRE process again from scratch. 🤡🤡

Last year I spoke about the unlikely circumstances under which we met in Costa Rica. Me, an Australian nomad/scamdemic escapee, and you, a Dominican model & aspiring coach trying to set up her own little online business.
This year, I’d like to reflect for a moment on the past year and how things have changed, plus a lesson learnt.
We’ve now settled into a new country, established a long term routine and begun to build roots. We’ve both found our groove in the relationship. You, as the home-maker, house-wife, cleaner, chef, pilates pro and aspiring momma. Me, as the lunatic in the office, staring at the screen for hours, writing, building and yelling at people on the phone - trying to hustle his way into making a dent in the universe.
There’s a lot of trad-wife and trad-husband stuff on socials these days, and I expect most of it is fake. In fact, I know many people who show one side online while in reality it’s completely different. We decided to show nothing online about us (other than the odd anniversary poast like this) but actually live that life for real. For everyone reading, I recommend the latter approach: It’s healthier for the soul (although maybe less so for the bank account & follower count).
That being said - if there’s something I’ve learned from marriage - is that it’s not all smooth sailing. Like I said, women are crazy - and men have been trying to understand them since the dawn of time (with little to show for it).. And perhaps therein lies the problem. You don’t necessarily want to be understood, but instead want presence. This is often mentioned theoretically, but takes on a whole new meaning practically. If there’s something you’ve taught me about women (without a single word), it’s this. And it’s made me a better man. You can read all the books & tweets you want, but real life is where rubber meets the road. As Bruce Lee once said: “Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”
So thankyou for being my wifey, my little sidekick, my clown, my slow cooker, my personal chef, my gym buddy, my home-maker, my personal intuition-device, my little model, and all the other things you are and plan to be (including your 99 personalities).
Love you, and I look forward to continuing our journey into wherever this life and this crazy-ass world leads.

I think that approach is infinitely more compelling than V4V.
I personally don’t think V4V scales. That’s why busking is not really a viable commercial strategy for 99% of the market.

I think this is a strong angle.
That being said, I do see some challenges in having my identity shared across multiple different platforms.
For example. People communicate with their audiences quite differently on Instagram, compared with X, compared with Substack, and certainly when compared with LinkedIn.
I’ve had a number of conversations with content creators who’ve mentioned this.
It’s not a deal breaker for them, but it’s something I don’t have a very clear answer for.
But overall - I think the portable identity and portable social graph is the biggest benefit, and the one worth leaning into with messaging & comms.

Appreciate you laying it out.
But I don’t think what you laid out is a viable pathway to something large or significant.
If nostr is going to be some minor little network where a few people congregate to avoid ads and just chat to each other - sure. I see value in that.
But that won’t change the web or make any meaningful impact in the world.
The future is content creation, and that means more and more content creators and a larger and larger creator economy. (Yep…more influencers).
Sure - 80% of them are cringe, but 20% are excellent educators and there is loads to learn. (Maybe it’s 90/10, or 99/1 ).
The web is going to become the future of education. And that means content creators, selling stuff, and that also means ads.
Will Nostr play that game ?
Or will it remain small and fringe ?

No. You just didn’t read what I said.
The point of my post is that outside of the tiny bubble on here, nobody knows where to place nostr in their minds.
That is a communication problem, NOT a tech problem.
And blue sky, with inferior tech, is doing a 10x better job with comms, by catering to the weirdo’s (that shitshow is growing at 20x the pace)
Furthermore, you clearly don’t understand network effects.
Unlike bitcoin, Nostr doesn’t have direct economic incentives built in, so I the network is more fragile and susceptible to becoming a tiny echo chamber.
Nothing in my post suggested “we need it all now” - but that there needs to be more thinking done on comms. Right now 90% or more of the focus is on tech - and IMO, we’ve got good enough tech to begin putting resources and effort toward comms & marketing.

Own your audience is one of the best angles.
And yes - perhaps these narratives need to be driven by products and businesses built on Nostr?
I’d hope at the very least though, that orgs like OpenSats, who have some sort of coordination power, can assist. That’s somewhat of an edge against the centralised competition if used right.
But comms is a very important next step. I think the tech is mature enough to move onto that as a focus now.

And the biggest area of struggle IMO is where nostr lives in people’s minds (outside of the regular crowd on here).
It’s struggling to find a place.
BlueSky, as shit as it is, found a place, and it’s very clear: “The Anti-X”.
And it’s growing 10-20x the rate that nostr is, as a result

I’m going to write more about establish micro and atomic networks.
The way you build larger networks is by stringing together many small networks.
It requires quite a bit of coordination, which is harder with a decentralised protocol. @npub10pe…n34f is a great imitative trying to direct some resources in a more deliberate way.
That’s why I think they should be thinking about marketing grants next

You can build a beautiful boat, but you need to get it on the water and sail it somewhere.

I’ve noticed as much in your writing. Which is a big part of why it appeals to more than just Bitcoiners.
And yep - I’m also optimistic wrt roadmaps. Step 2 is we all have to execute on the roadmaps. But step 3 still remains: viable go to market approaches that are more & more compelling.
Of all the pillars of network growth, I think comms is still the weakest.
1. Tech is great.
2. Design, and there “Product” is catching up.
The areas of weakness:
3. Comms / Go to market.
4. operational excellence.
We’re going in the right direction for sure, and the correct order of operations.
At the end of the day, I’m just pointing out that the next peak is going to require a new / different focus.

I didn’t compare it to blue sky. That place is a shitshow.
I used it to contrast where bluesky lives in people’s minds and where nostr does, for people NOT on nostr.

I think what you’re doing at comingle is an excellent example. Love the concept and the approach you’re taking.
The portable identity is IMO one of the killer features for sure. In fact, it’s what I most pitch when talking about Nostr to people (I never really discuss censorship resistance). But (a) I don’t think the narrative around that is being well enough articulated by us, and (b) it seems to be that people grasp that point intellectually, but then don’t have alot of real, functional Nostr products to use beyond X clones right now.
That being said, I know these things take time. So I’m not suggesting “oh we need to have more apps now or we’re dead”.
What I am suggesting though, is a move away from CR as a main selling point, bc I don’t think it’s that important, and doesn’t differentiate nostr enough from X. The blue sky example and traction helps validate this claim.

lol. The point of this post is not to just plop your head in the sand like an ostrich. Nostr might be fine technically, but things like BlueSky are growing at 30x the pace - and they are technically inferior.
Network effects matter. Without them, networks are dead. Nostr is far from meaningful critical mass
