The four-year-old figured out that he can dictate into Messages on the iPad and that grownups can mostly read the results. But a). He’s four, and silly, b). he has a couple of the common preschool speech impediments, and c). he can’t actually read what he dictated. The results are dadaist puzzles.

Crypto bros used to tell me crypto was good for the environment because its energy demand would drive adoption of renewables. I am starting to see AI bros make the same case.
In addition to being observably wrong, this is like saying a higher cancer rate is good because it drives cancer treatments.

Microsoft’s terms of service said Copilot was “for entertainment purposes only.”
An Nvidia executive said AI is more expensive than humans.
Google argued in German court that everyone knows they can’t trust AI.
The tech industry has bet a trillion dollars on something they know doesn’t work.

2026-06-07 05:52:20 UTC

The tech industry is on the verge of discovering just how satiable the demand for AI really is.

2026-05-30 20:04:55 UTC

When someone says “I can’t do this without AI,” they could save time by taking the last two words off and the sentence would still be just as true.

Two gender-related #FediTips:
1. The first time you interact with someone or say something about their post, it's worth checking their profile to see if they've shared their pronouns. I've seen a slew of misgenderings of trans and enby people in replies recently, all of which were preventable.
2. If you are comfortable revealing this about yourself, it's a great idea to share your own pronouns in your bio, ESPECIALLY if you feels like you don't "need" to. Normalize sharing pronouns!

As far as I'm concerned, you have three options:
1. Not watch the new Harry Potter.
2. Watch the new Harry Potter but shut up about it.
3. Admit to watching the new Harry Potter and be judged.
There is no fourth option. I think you should do number 1, but you're a grownup and I don't have access to your router, so it's not up to me. But understand that if you do watch it, you need to either shut the hell up or brace yourself. Because I am not here to make you feel ok about it.

3. There's no step 3.

Sam Altman said, “People talk about how much energy it takes to train an AI model … But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human. It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart.”
Have you noticed AI boosters being very specific and concrete about how AI will destroy all of the jobs, and very vague and hand-wavy about how AI will create abundance and remake the economy so people won't have to have jobs?
That's not an accident.

“I’m one of these people who’s very anti-’robot rights,’ as it were, because I believe it’s essentially a degradation of human rights. It doesn’t elevate robots to the same status as humans, it degrades humans to the same status as robots. And I think we should always, when we’re looking at these machines, treat them as what are, which is avatars of capital. You’re not being nice to a conscious being if you help a robot cross the street; you are helping capital in some way.”
–James Vincent, speaking to @nprofile…qgdv on this week’s ’Tech Won’t Save Us.’
