Is there any special magic required to run a .bin file on Manjaro?
When I double click it I am asked which program I want to open it with. If I open the terminal, all guides say to just type the file name, but it always say "command not found".

Saw a video about super obscure games, and this had me wondering what are the most obscure games that you remember having played?
I think for me it would have been Lighthouse from 1996, which I have never seen anyone mention anywhere in the last 28 years. But being developed by Sierra, it can't actually be that obscure. It even has a wikipedia page. Positively mainstream.

Brian May abandoned his PhD study in astrophysics in 1974 to become a full time musician on the success of Queen.
Over 30 years later, the subject of his thesis had still not been very much researched by others and he was able to complete and submit it in 2007.
There is still so much more meaningful things to do than anyone has the time and funding for.

Erich Honecker got his big military parade for the 40th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic on 7th October 1989. There had been weekly protests all over the country for the past 5 weeks.
10 days later he was removed from office. One month later all the government ministers resigned. In the first free election in March, the party went from 55% of parliament seats to 16%. By November, the state no longer existed.

I suspect most wars are like that. It's just that NATO has a better track record of hiding that fact.
The Abrams tank is from 1980.
Leopard 2 is from 1979.
Apaches are from 1975.
F-16s are from 1973.
The M16 rifle has been in service since 1962.
The 52 in B-52 stands for 1952.
Though NATO is doing way more upgrading on their active service stuff than the museum pieces the Russians are rolling out.

Attempts at replicating the paint jobs on ancient marble statues always looking pretty crap might be because the traces of pigments that can be recovered from the surface of authentic statues are only from the very first coat of paint.
Given that we have plenty of mosaics, and actual paintings on wood from Roman-period Egypt that have a lot of detail and shading, it seems almost certain that the final paint job on the statues would have been much more elaborate as well.

I mean, sure, you can seal the entrances of the mine.
But like ice, salt under pressure will slowly flow, and all the tunnels will eventually get squeezed shut. Which also sounds great to seal up the buried waste.
But this basically is a very slow collapse of the mine. And as everyone living in areas of heavy mining knows, when the mine collapses, the ground above will settle as well. And how watertight will the rock be then?

The "military industrial complex" is a giant pit of corruption between manufacturers, officers, and politicians that is exploiting their nation.
And the European weapon industry is already massive. I can't really find any numbers on production output, but Europe is exporting some two thirds of the amount that the US is exporting.
And France alone is exporting more than Russia.

The next sensible project for the world would be to make the advances of modern engineering and medicine available to everyone.
The technologies are here, most of the resources are here. All we need is to collect the waste money that is stagnating in hyper-rich people's wallets.

Searching for the Star Wars Despecialized Edition files send me to a forum post that links to a google doc, that includes a link in the middle to a second huge google doc, that has a tiny link somewhere in the middle to a third google dock, that links to a number of other sites which have download links. Many of which are probably dead by now.

When I switched from Fedora to Manjaro, I was giving Amarok another try as my music player. It mostly works, but has a number of very minor, slightly inconvenient bugs, and seems to not have some simple features I appreciated in Clementine. Nothing individually significant, but very unsatisfactory in their volume.
I'm now trying Audacious, and this looks and feels very nice.
Very plain UI, but seems very customizable to show the things I want and remove those I don't.

There's something really cool about Klytus from Flash Gordon.
Yes, he's quite a bit like Doctor Doom and Darth Vader, and a little bit like Skeletor, but within the context of this silly movie, he has an interesting presence of malice and competence.

True, but infections by microbes are always the microbe taking something from the infected body that it wants.
I think the odds are higher than not that an alien microbe entering a body would find nothing to eat and starve without being able to multiply.
But there's only so many ways you can make simple molecules out of the most common elements. So some alien biospheres sharing sugar as a basic energy storage molecule would be happening at random.

Alien microbes would have no adaptations to survive in the very hostile environment of the human body.
But humans are stuck in this solar system forever anyway, because interstellar distances are stupidly big, and there really are no incentives to travel for 50 years to stand on rocks that are just like the rocks we have at home.

Multiple monitor support in #KDE is being a bit of a pain in the butt.
I normally have a two screen setup, but like I like to play games with controller on my TV as the third screen.
Since #steam is being fussy about only playing on the primary screen, I have to switch which screen is primary depending on what screen I want to play on.
And with the third screen sometimes being on or off, my three desktops keep jumping around different monitors all the time. 😦

With all I learned about game technology and design over the last year, I am increasingly leaning more towards smaller scope games that can be done in a few years than going for one big dream game.
Though the thing I find the most captivating about my favorite games is the feeling of vast openness and time becoming irrelevant. (I love space and wilderness games.) Not sure how to get something like that with a 4-6 hour game set in a single castle or something like that. 😦

I just learned that #KDE Menu Editor is a thing and it makes adding new programms to your launcher so much easier than looking up the location where entries are stored and a blank template for how the entry files are structured.
(Also lets you easily remove launcher items you never want to use.)
Right click on the launcher icon in the task bar and pick "Edit applications..."

The only mainstream games from the last 10 years that I bought are The Witcher 3, Dark Souls 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and Elden Ring.
4 games from just 2 developers.
And Elden Ring is the first soulsborne I never finished even once (100% completed all others) because it was bloated and dragged on, and I really can't muster any excitement for a 150 hour "mark off all the icons on the open-world map and collect vendor trash" game anymore.

It could very well be that the person who compiled this video was deliberately selecting game trailers that are all animated CGI concept art.
But if this is how game marketing is done these days, I'd feel really worried.
No concept, no premise, no gameplay. Only vibes. (And I can tell with each one which recent game they are imitating.)

I actually made pretty good progress finally getting around to play old games that I missed out on 25 years ago (when there were more amazing games coming out than I could play).
Unfortunately, Daggerfall is the worst game I've ever seen.
Jedi Knight is really crude.
Deus Ex is actually pretty bad.
And Unreal is just not any good.

Something I noticed with the earliest 3D cutscenes is that the animator often did a really nice job animating the entire sequence of movement for all the characters, but apparently nobody had any understanding of cutting and editing film scenes.
They often drag on and on, with camera just following a character walking from one position to another.
