What's the status of Thunderbolt support under Asahi Linux btw?

@nprofile…7sa3 That's not correct because 1. "1" is the wrong value to write into the "unbding" file and 2. if you forcefully remove a device while in use (which this interface does) it might hang Userspace as it does with compositors having open FDs on the GPU

@nprofile…wndv but also traditional linting systems generally tell if a lint isn't 100% precise and in which cases it could fall apart, so people can kinda judge when it's wrong or not easier.
Obviously if one would like to improve sashiko to be useful for newcommers, one needs to come up with a way to make certain "lints" 100% precise.

I have a theory about what sorts of programmers like to use AI and what sorts totally doesn't like it and I feel it's kinda related to how one "thinks" while in the act of programming.
If one "thinks" in their spoken language, AI might be a good fit, but if one does not, the translation from the "abstract thoughts" to "spoken language" is too high for AI to be beneficial in any sense for that person.
I'll have to keep thinking about this.

Soo.. I'm kinda wondering.. are there people who when they are programming aren't thinking in code?
Like come up with whatever you want to do in human language and than translate this into code later?
Or is everybody thinking in terms of code directly? Like in the "I can _feel_ how the code has to look like" way?
I'm like wondering, because I never really thought about this nor talked with anybody how they actually do this. And at least for me, I don't use my normal language at all.

2 bits to encode L2 cache eviction hints
2 bits for some unknown caching stuff
1 bit to mark the access thread private
8 bit to specify a load mask to disable channels of the output vec4s
1 bit to enable the uniform register mode, which is otherwise unused
then there is a block of 30 or so bits for scheduling information (the hw doesn't wait on register read/writes, the compiler has to insert stall cycles and read/write barriers)
so that's 117?

12 bits for the opcode
2x 8 bits for the destination vec4 registers, each register holds 32 bits
4 bits for the predicate (the ISA supports predicate execution)
2x 8 bits for two input registers (uniform base address + non uniform offset)
1 bit to toggle 32|64 bits for the non uniform offset
17 bits for a constant offset immediate
1x 4 bits for a input predicate forcing a 0 result (bound check optimization)
So that's already 70 bits just for basics

@nprofile…ux8r the worst part is that there isn't any VLIW stuff going on in the nvidia ISA. it's 128 bits for a single instruction. for every instruction. like a simple move between two registers also encodes in 128 bits.
And for atomics or load/stores they actually run out of space, because why not.

I'm amazed how nvidia came up with their 128 bit instruction encoding a while back, which... normally you'd assume is plenty of space for everything and yet they constantly run out of space and have to repurpose bits for other uses and move things around..
or spread one parameter of an instruction across three bit ranges..
or reduce immediate sizes in the next gen to support other things.
It's kinda amazing that even 128 bits aren't enough.

I sometimes used the "old school" translation thing between two languages I know well and the results are often quite bad compared to LLM ones
Though LLM ones have other ways of being wrong. So it's not like they are overall better
But in my experience the LLM ones do read a lot easier than the NN ones
So I can kinda understand why people prefer to use those

but at the same time I can also understand it can be scary, because you don't want to find a meaning that others will reject you for, what if at the end people will claim it was all wasted, because your meaning was something "unneeded"?

Like seeing all the usual AI patterns, but also knowing that using English might put them at discomfort or they aren't proficient enough to contribute at all..

Social mobility is a bit more abstract, and hyperfocusing on merit is actually harmful in terms of inequality!
So yes, you'll be able to find a lot of skilled people, but the question is.. are they skilled because of effort, or because of opportunities given outside their control and it just ended up that way?

Might be interesting to actually have some social studies on that subject and check how prevalent the usual social mobility factors replicate in FOSS or not

like there are sometimes incompetent people, or sometimes people with skills make bad predictions of things
Or sometimes a random person isn't heard on a subject they have a more correct opinion on than somebody in a position of power and we have to take that in mind when discussing what a famous dude said or didn't say

However, why isn't somebody better suited in your position? There always is somebody like that somewhere, so why not them?
Why do you have the interests you have? Did you make a conscious decision on where you want to develop skills?
Sure people work hard to achieve something, and I don't want to take that away, but that doesn't mean it's the reason for where we are

@nprofile…sxq7 on nvidia the VBIOS also encodes: perf levels, voltage curves for clocks, voltage controller configs (which GPIOs to hit or how the PWM ones are set up), connectors (including eDP), GPIOs (for e.g. signalling power alerts to the GPU), power sensors, power budgets, thermal limits, etc...
it just contains about everything that could be product specific
It even contains a device specific initialization script that e.g. setups thermal emergency shutdown thresholds

@nprofile…m0nh nah, I just have a good coordinator. As I said, that ones I used before were trash and always lost connection.
I got the "Conbee II" and I do have like.. 20 2.4 Wifi networks in reach?
There are different zigbee coordinator controllers, and some suck and some don't.
I do have some smart plug repeaters as well, but even with those, the previous and much cheaper coordinator I used was still seeing connectivity losses constantly.

anyway.. finally got to playing and finishing "Ender Lilies" and "Ender Magnolia" and playing both was kinda fascinating, because it's obvious that the game mechanics are kinda similar, however I always like to see UX improvements between titles of game series. Like "Ender Magnolia" is just well made throughout the entire game, where "Ender Lilies" was a bit janky here and there.
Anyway play both games if you got the time.

Freedesktop, as a responsible corporate "Open Source" project participates in Pride Month by changing the logo of a super duper important and heavily used and looked at project (libxtrans) to the universal pride colors (I dunno, green and yellow or what they were, I already forgot).

rust should have overloads for lower int sizes for Rem:
e.g.:
usize % u32 -> u32
usize % u8 -> u8
Not sure how painful that would be to implement, but I do have code where I run into this 🙃
sure, "(a % b as usize) as u32" is a working workaround, but I kinda wonder if we can have that in nice instead.

AI is making everybody more efficient the same way the industrialization did: by pushing the costs down to non white people.
Data-centers aren't build in primarily white and suburbian neighborhoods.
They are build where the "outcasts" and poor folks live to make their life even more miserable.
You can all claim "high efficiency" only because you aren't the one paying for the costs.
You might be more efficient, but society as a whole isn't.
