I’ve made my own server using redis. For me it was better because I can pre-index the database and lightly fetch it when needed. Pre-index work so well bc nostr already give the indexes by tags, Id and pubkey so it’s basically only store and fetch.

I do agree browser url should include many p2p protocols now by default like torrent etc.
http over tcp is still a weak link and easy to target by the fed because it ends always in the same place.
Something like webtorrent can disrupt the idea of an endpoint not more to a centralized server but to many seeders. Paid seeders as I hope we could game it and host it ourselves. Earning meritorious hard money for holding strong ideas online.

I’m not encouraging you to lose your momentum in any way.
I’m just documenting that are another ways to cyber hornets achieve “decentraland” and game it using many other “views”, like you’re one, and use it to find useful topics in many ways like used to be #freenode, Wikipedia, even Facebook in the early days.

This one looks good. But let me point some interesting aspects:
1- being written in rust and implementing and using a DHT relay may add a burden to **not be able to run inside a browser**
That’s because browsers today lack UDP raw socket to make the hole-punch necessary for unleashing the NATed users.
That’s why I normally think in a solution that use webrtc in replacement for udp. Like webtorrent made to upgrade from torrent inside browser.
Well, torrents alike still need the DHT relay and well, it cost money to run and is an element of censoring itself.
There’s where nostr joins force. Nostr today is responsible for keeping all the data and hashes and signatures like when the bitcoin blockchain started and before any taproot idea comes to mind.
Torrent in the first time only cared about the hashes of the data, like a very simple version of nostr or blockchain.
That’s more consistent with the way #bitcoin is going now with taproot, and nostr could learn from it.
Why store all the data together with the hashes and all the burden that comes with storing user data like jb55 said it will lead to abuses and trolls.
#nostr still need to learn how to game this abuses into costs like for example: charging users to store their notes using sats by TTL.
Query the hashes using some paid-like service.
Right now all is free but nothing is decentralized. Like all the prior concurrents.

Oh I see.
So #nostr is kinda like #bluesky.
#bitcoin is made different, you can abuse it but there are rules in the game that make you pay fees for your play.
Encouraging good behaviors and not trolling behind the lack-of-technology is something that seems to be made from an government agency.
Like in 2010 when we can’t have comments sections in website because people will talk what they thought.
Like I’ve said before the notes should be stored decentralized and be paid to be stored by TTL. That’s what will avoid abusive behavior.
What will make easy to index is making people pay or be paid to be part of the indexes. (Aggregators)
But now if the fear is of being emotionally damaged, like #bsky and others maybe is better start delaying deployments and wait the concurrence have the courage for doing it.
What’s being done here is a strong connection between profiles and notes that will sure be used by lawyers to sue anybody who want use simple language.

This is a great disadvantage when comparing to other websites that hosted cyberhornets before nostr.
Reddit - 2013 - 2016 was the best in my opinion before the karma started to be gamed.
Twitter was never good, was only a solution after theymos started banning all BSV/contrary movements.
So it’s a lot to think about like: how to improve dev experience to create useful aggregators and make it help we all see what better we can do together.
The way nostr is now make me feel we should go back to IRC #freenode.

Plain simple json has a big advantage for specifications.

I have some demos trying to build a p2p connection with webrtc using nostr as the signal channel to transverse NAT. It’s working on one-side NAT, but I’m still working towards two-side NAT. But to nostr that uses websockets (p2b) it’s already a good alternative. I’m trying to bootstrap using nostr (websocket) and upgrade to webrtc p2p shared notes more like for small communities. I mean, in my community I don’t really need to know Whois zuck,musk or gates. I only need my friends notes and money.

Using your same logic: blocking Ordinals, Inscriptions or any usage of #bitcoin to store anything besides #bitcoin value transactions is a SPAM and should be banned/censored/avoided.

#nostr is heavily centralized into 3-5 very tiny servers. Very easy targets (individual server owner) and easily to outcompete by any competent tech company (Google has already said his intentions to run a nostr server).
Web2 protocols seems to not work for dex but I appreciate all the work done for the screens on android and iPhone done by nostr but all solutions proposed here seems to be trying to lower the #bitcoin expectations by a lot.

No one is going to have an open relay at 0 cost.
That’s why they block “spam”.
Any server maintainer want to keep only his opinion-like-minded “good spam”.
Neither MySQL, Mail or websocket (nostr) will relay anything without a pre-filter.

Let me explain: if “all the world” MySQL servers had internet open doors you sure could query all databases in the same way it’s done with websocket (nostr).

Being p2p-first can give the OP control over who replies to them.
Websockets first design seems to be a mistake and I think we should talk about making notes protocol agnostic.
This will increase a lot the work to be done by clients as they will have to ask many peers for notes and build a timeline after that but it’s the price to sovereign being.

Torrent really need a fix on its incentives to seeds. All torrents I see today are 99% leaches against 1% seeds. But at least it removes the needs of the seeds being hosted at single-point failure.
Wonderful to see you guys fixing this protocol. It’s sad only UDP can do p2p and it’s being kept outside of browsers.
