I've been looking for a good MIDI to CV interface for well over a year now. I'd prefer something external to my case, but I'm flexible. The one I want the most is the Intellijel MIDI 1U with the Intellijel CVx 1U expander. Unfortunately I can't find anywhere that has the CVx module in stock (new or used).
Elektron did announce their Outbox 8, which would qualify (I use a Digitakt 2 as my main sequencer), but honestly I want more than 8 CV outs. I'm hoping to drive 3 voices (gate + pitch + modulation), or two voices with additional modulation CVs.
Dear fellow #eurorack enthusiasts, please offer guidance.

@nprofile…htvp not trying to equate any of these tools with humans, or imply real intelligence, but no, not a vulnerability worthy of a CVE. It's basically roughly equivalent to a human coding; all humans are also capable of producing vulnerable code, and we're not assigning CVEs to humans. If this were a deterministic codegen tool then I could see it being a CVE but these tools are not that, and never will be.

@nprofile…vvv8 I believe you are correct, and for me it further cements the idea that OpenAI and Anthropic are quite screwed. Anthropic has been slowly but surely ramping up how quickly users hit daily and weekly limits and I feel like they're on the brink of hitting the threshold where they lose a ton of their users permanently. Especially with the Claude Code source leak leading to what are roughly a bunch of forks.
We've already kind of seen this play out with the folks who are most AI-pilled using OpenClaw, they're starting to see the value in the very cheap models. That idiot who blew through a ton of money overnight just figuring out if it was the morning yet did not solve their problem with cron or something reasonable, they solved their problem with cheaper models (still orders of magnitude more expensive than cron).

Related question: Have you used "open ear" earbuds while doing tasks like mowing a lawn with an electric mower? Is that reasonably possible without cranking the volume so high that I damage my ears? Or do I really need to go with an in ear earbud? I struggle with in ear stuff as they all irritate my ear canal. I'm looking for earbuds because over ear headphones are way too uncomfortable to wear during the summer while doing yard work, or while working out.
Boosts welcome, but please only reply if you have actual experience, not speculation. Assume I am already knowledgeable about headphones, I have 4 pairs I regularly use that vary in price from ~$150 to ~$1,000 USD, I am really only looking for a specific answer to my problem.

Even if you generate your dependencies by telling an LLM to reproduce the API of some popular library you now have an imitation of that library. Maybe it's perfect. Maybe it's not. Even if it's a perfect replica, if a CVE is discovered in the dependency you copied you're not going to be alerted, and you're not going to be able to just bump the version you depend on to get the fix.
Your dependencies will also stagnate. You're not focused on developing them, you're focused on developing your product. You're not going to benefit from the new things added to future versions of the dependency that you just copied. You may miss out on new features that make your codebase easier to use, more performant, or easier to maintain.

I've been reducing the amount of dependencies that my work projects have every year. I plan on continuing to reduce the amount of dependencies we have. There isn't a world where I'm going to just start having an LLM fabricate them for me instead. I'm just reducing the need for dependencies. I don't want to suddenly have to maintain them myself.

There's a lot of evidence out there that LLMs just pickle some folks brains, but this whole "We don't need dependencies anymore we'll just use LLMs to produce everything" is probably the biggest sign I've seen. I've seen this argument from at least three distinct people now, and I just don't know how you could come to that result, even if LLMs were perfect there's still one million reasons why you'd want dependencies.

@nprofile…nvaq I am not sure my answer changes. I would be much more willing to forgive issues if someone with "good intentions" put effort in to align their system's function with its stated purpose, even if that effort wasn't perfect, which I think aligns with your Thought A.
If you just throw your hands up and say "well fuck, I built a tool meant to do something good, but now it's exclusively used to do bad things, I guess there's nothing I can do about it" then I don't really give a shit about your "good intentions". At that point disavow the work and stop enabling it, and if you have the ability to shut it down, do that.

Most of the time this would mean "upon release".
Sometimes this could be during R&D, prior to release. For example: the purpose of Hyperloop was to prevent high speed rail from being built in California. It accomplished this goal without a system ever being built and generally available to the public. Test tracks were built. Prototypes were made. There is no Hyperloop station that a person can use today.

@nprofile…zhky yes, and the biggest influence for this change is arguably Dick Cheney. He was pushing hard for the "Unitary Executive Theory" of the executive branch and he made really good headway with that while Bush Jr was in office. Obama didn't reverse course, and now here we are.

@nprofile…zhky My understanding is that we've already allocated the money well ahead of time for stuff like this. It costs billions, yes, but that has already been earmarked for our military. Our military budget is huge, and the military doesn't even have to publicly state why they need as much money as they claim they need, there is some congressional oversight, but it's definitely not enough. It's pretty well known that our military would never, ever, pass a financial audit of any kind.
If we were to officially enter a war, with an indefinite timeline associated with it, then yes, there would probably be additional budgetary requests from the military. Seems like this is a lot less likely to just settle down than what happened with the previous strikes, or Venezuela, so it does feel like we will officially be at war in the near future (near = sometime during the remainder of Trump's term).

@nprofile…uc38 yeah I have "1.6k" followers there and get no engagement if I try. Every popular post I see is full of bot replies, and lot of folks engaging with those bot replies. I'll often see a popular post that is from an obvious bot account.
Just last week there was an entire bot net, all using the same domain for their accounts (from a free domain service!) and if you went to any trending topic they had the top post, as well as many other posts. I reported it, it went away. Then a few days altere it popped up with a new domain name (a .org domain), dominating their trending topics again.

Apparently YouTube is using some sort of AI tool to upscale/downscale YouTube shorts, making things that are real look like they've been generated by an LLM.

Seems to me like a great way to make the general public be ok with AI content. If you make the real stuff look like it was AI generated, you won't think twice when you actually see an AI generated video. YouTube is incentivized in having you watch as many videos as possible on their platform, whether or not they're AI generated doesn't really matter, Ad impressions matter. It's interesting that they've chosen to start using this technology on shorts, which is the part of their platform that seems to have the most AI generated content.
Even if this isn't done on purpose to make people feel more comfortable with AI content, that is absolutely going to be the effect, and that will benefit Google. There are few incentives here for Google to do the right thing. They have a monopoly and they're using it to their advantage (just like they did when they knowingly made Google Search worse).

Hello fellow #painting folks. I am seeking advice. I have a pile of acryla gouache that I want to use, but my attempts at making a DIY wet palette have made the experience of using acrylics miserable, especially compared to water color and gouache. Maybe it's just my lack of experience, but I really dislike what I've done in the past (basically wax paper sitting on top of a bed of wet paper towels).
I've looked at commercial solutions, but they all seem to be some proprietary system of "buy our initial kit, and then continue to buy refills until you die or we discontinue the product" and I kind of hate that.
So, my question is: What do you use for a wet palette? What do you like about your solution? What do you not like about your solution?

Every time I see someone share a photo that is a screenshot of a picture from their photos app I want to scream. You have the source photo right there. Send that photo. Why are you taking a screenshot of an app. I don't need to see the UI elements of the app. I don't want to see how low your phone's battery is. You have the photo right there, there's a share button right there.

@nprofile…03vg @nprofile…gffv Sure, but where I'm struggling is this is the kind of problem that falls under "I know it when I see it", and I'm struggling to find ways to make this easy to detect.
We already use linters and formatters, they're good, but not good enough.
We already have piles of unit and integration tests, and we do a lot of manual testing, but those don't prevent people from writing overly complex and brittle code.
For example: someone needed a feature, to get that feature implemented they added a new server side API, which then also required a new flag to be passed to a bunch of other server side APIs so they would know to call this other new API that would give them the correct data. This meant new APIs would need to implement this flag, and we'd need to ensure that flag gets passed around.
This new server side API, and associated API flag were entirely unnecessary. We had pre-existing ways to do exactly what was needed to be done, they are less error prone, and do not require adding a new flag to existing APIs, and passing that flag around.
I don't know of a static analysis tool that would have prevented this problem. Certainly not linters. Certainly not code formatters.

Re: automated testing, we already have a ton of automated testing, and we've recently committed to adding a lot more, more early, and more often.
What I'm looking for (should have been more clear above) is something more proactive. I want folks writing better code before we even get to testing. You can have really complex & brittle code, that is well tested and proven to be bug free. It's a nightmare to maintain, and you can catch new bugs quickly thanks to automation, but it's still bad code.
Removing code is for sure a good idea, I've actually really been working hard at this, and I think if I were to look at every PR I've had this year I've removed more code than I've added.

@nprofile…l2zz Yeah, the idea I've had for a while is trying to create opportunities for reflection. One thing I've been toying with is having a checklist at PR time that asks some questions like:
- Does this solution add more complexity? Or reduce complexity?
- Is there a way to achieve the same solution with a less complex solution?
- Does this code read nicely?
- Could this code be written in a way that avoids the possibility of and NPE?
- While writing this code did you run into a part of the codebase that was overly complex, and made it hard to implement your solution?

@nprofile…yjrv The backend peope are the frontend people. The backend is Java.
I would agree that at least some of the complexity is an alignment issue with the backend. The best way to describe it without sharing code is basically we have a set of very generic APIs that do almost anything you'd want (essentially they let you do CRUD on SQL tables), as a result we default to using these methods, instead of creating purpose built APIs. This means that folks often put too much code in the client.

For our purposes assume quality means: maintainable, human readable code, with minimal bugs, where complex solutions are only desired when necessary. This definition is tweakable.
Replies/boosts are encouraged. Opinions are expected, because I suspect this is a very opinionated topic.
Things off the table: firing people, switching languages or frameworks.

@nprofile…28s9 I like all forms of tofu. My favorite brand of tofu is Hodo, it's significantly better than the average block of tofu found in an American grocery store.
The typical way I eat tofu is to rinse it, slice it in half, squeeze out excess liquid, cube it, and then fry it in a pan with oil. I cook it so that at least two sides of every cube has a crispy crust.
I will often (but not always) finish cooking the tofu by turning off the heat, and add 1 to 2 tbsp of nutritional yeast + a pinch of salt to the pan, then stir to coat, and let the residual heat of the pan cook the nutritional yeast.

There are many reasons to not use a single platform that is created or run by Dansup, but I will give you what I think is one of the clearest: Dan barely uses his own platforms.
For example, during his trip to FediCon, a time when you'd think he'd really want to promote his platforms he posted 4 photos to PixelFed. In that same time period he posted 14 photos to Mastodon.
If he has made the best photo sharing platform for the Fediverse, why is his preferred photo platform Mastodon?
His PixelFed account has 358 posts since 2018, an average of 4 a month. His Mastodon.social account has 2.8k posts since 2016, an average of 27 a month. I know it's a little apples to oranges to consider total post count, but go look at the media tab on his Mastodon account, he for sure has posted more photos to Mastodon than Pixelfed since he launched Pixelfed.
Dan is a Mastodon user that happens to work on Pixelfed.
I don't trust people who don't use the platforms they're working on, you shouldn't either.

@nprofile…0xfz this is beyond mediocracy though, the URL for this task already exists, and has been featured on the home page for years, it is github.com/pulls. I'm sure you know this, I'm sure many people know this, and that's what makes this so bad. Even someone mediocre at their job should know it's a bad idea to replace that URL with a button that triggers a co-pilot trial, which outputs a non-deterministic, definitely not always correct, answer. Also, this is the feature that's going to convince someone to pay for your subscription service? THIS? Everyone involved in this decision is bad at their job.

@nprofile…w8us the lying part is a direct result of AI scrapers though. It's one of the few things that seems to work, at least in part (probably not for long though). Basically, folks have found if you lie about your status code the scrapers will do a back-off. If you tell the truth and send them a status code that tells them to go fuck themselves they will change their IP address and their user agent, and continue to pummel your server.
