Currently you need a vps and the ports 80 and 443 for now.
4gb ram and 2 cores and swap is what i use on my personal instance for testing
I recomend 8g swap and 4 cores, the cheapest contabo or ovh vps (5€ month)

Mastodon as a software also has extreme power on fedi.
And the cost part is not entirely correct. There is appviewlite, wich is easily self hosteable and very light.
The problem arises when you get to bluesky scale and say “I want to store every post of everyone”. Blacksky does this as example, and its not easy nor cheap.
Wafrn only stores posts from people users follow or are replies or mentions. Not gona lie, my search sucks! But can be improved (except the full text search on posts, it can and will be improved).
User search is easy to build a directory of users with handle, description and avatar and integrating it. Hell, maybe it already exists as a microcosm service im not aware haha
There are also applications that do not use appview like red dwarf.
The protocol is flexible in a different way than the model of activitypub.

they are different protocols with different tradeoffs.
activitypub mental model is very easy to explain: you make post, your send it to your server, your server sends it to your follower's server.
Atproto takes another route that would require "doing an acerola on a video" to explain it, but it is very diferent.
the way of looking at it is that bluesky app could be nuked tomorrow, and someone could start another app where you are following the same people and have same followers.
The PDSs are only one piece of the puzle

if you are on the bsky pds they can nuke your account, because bsky is responsible for your data
if you are outside bsky, the most they can do is block your account from being viewed by people using bsky appview.
they could also say "yeah lets use bsky moderation", because the protocol allows that, but that only means hiding your posts on the main one
