I think I’m going to wax seal it, but apart from that, it’s finally done! A white cube, rococo frou-frou bits and a carved snail (this snail shell actually IS a handle), it’s definitely been an educational project. I’ve learned Blender-as-a-CAD tool, CNC stuff, hand carving and a whole bunch of other stuff. Now to make something a bit different.

Still to be waxed and glued and tidied but, at last! I have a pile of half carved bits with broken eye stalks, they’re so delicate. If you want to develop a deep appreciation for something, try drawing it or sculpting it.

Made another couple of shells. The two tone one is the original plan, involves cutting slices of wood with a spiral and helical profile to slot and glue together, and then cut the shell shape out of that block. It has potential still, but didn’t quite work here. The other one is purple heart wood which went a nice mauve shade when waxed.

For the first time I did something new and it worked first time. 🥳🥳🥳
First time doing a two sided thing (flipping the board over halfway through) and first use of two new types of cutting bits. Should have kept everything in order when separating it from the board as I’ve now got quite a jigsaw puzzle (it will be an icosahedron)

I've seen some significant bugs in Safari for 26, like opening a dropdown and it flies off into a corner and disappears. It's seriously fucked.

There are new units for it. Dvh looks like a good catch all:
- sh / svw: Small viewport (when toolbars are visible)
- Ivh / Ivw: Large viewport (when toolbars are hidden)
- dvh / dvw: Dynamic viewport (adapts as the Ul changes)

When I had to go to an office it was in West London right under the Heathrow flight path, a plane every 30 seconds during the day, it was relentless, but they have a curfew at night. Without it Londoners would be even more feral than they are, it’d be real 28 Days Later stuff.

I’m looking for a new job as my company will be reorganising soon. I do software design*, user research, product management and have hired and managed teams of designers and developers.
Looking for something senior but I like the mixed nature of startup roles because I still like doing actual hands-on design. I’m in the UK, and a remote role is best for me.

The garden is semi-deliberately a mess (so many birds and insects!), but I will need to clean out the greenhouse and shift a pile of bamboo clippings soon. Booo. I got some sample sheets of Yupo to try. It’s plastic ‘paper’ so… you know, but it can be wiped clean so means you can blend alcohol markers like watercolour. This is the translucent version. Tiny piece of paper means insect drawing!

It’s very cold out there, but very clear. The Orion one was stacked 15 or so 1 second exposures (handheld! Go me and my human statue skills), and the moon is from 10 or so exposures.

The new fabric piping bag arrived so I had another go at Viennese whirls. Same recipe as before but half the sugar in the filling so the flavour of vanilla and the jam comes through. So satisfying to make!

I made Viennese biscuits! Never made them before. They’re not Viennese Swirls because the silicone piping bag exploded the moment I tried to use it. The smaller fabric one (too small for the pastry star tip) for the filling worked fine though and was quite fun. So, I’ll get a fabric one for the larger ones next time. Now in the fridge to see if they do the texture thing I love.

Today I put things I’ve drawn and painted into frames at last, and put my pen display on a monitor stand. Hopefully it holds up to me drawing on it.
I’ve also got this oval frame and the last few years I’ve done a thing showing the year to go in it. Before that I had an idea of doing one every month but it got to March 2020 and I didn’t replace it for months, it stayed March 2020 until 2021. Oops. Jinx? Anyway, 2025 will be colourful.

Oof, no sleep for you! I used to live near an ambulance station and quite a few times the sirens got too much for me, but you can’t moan about it because someone will explain to you what ambulances are for. 😖

Wind is the only weather I really dislike, grabbing at your clothes and hair, knocking things over and making a noise. It’s like a distillation of everything annoying about someone else’s badly behaved child.

Feeling a bit grumpy. All the beeping. The alarms are loud and most of the time I have to cancel them myself, which often triggers another one. Also do people normally only eat a gnat’s portion of cornflakes for breakfast? I’m starving.

Doctor sent me to A&E with a “you have to go right now”, phone an ambulance if you have to. Only had to wait 5 minutes to be seen and have been connected to many wires and beeping machines since. I even got a room! No sleep though, it’s a busy department and everything beeps. Evvvverryyyttthhhiiingggggg. Beep beep boop boop beeeeeee bip bip bip beep boop ting ting ting.
Still not fixed. Hopefully today.
