the problem with establishing alliances on the basis of "shared values" is that it ignores the much more solid "shared interests". We may feel more comfortable with US culture, but in reality we don't have many shared interests with the US. There is little trade between the two countries.
We should base alliances on the much more solid foundation of shared interests. China and Australia both have a very strong interest in keeping shipping lanes open in the west pacific,. We both want a world with fair trade, free from tariffs. These are more substantial than a shared interest in Hollywood movies or a nostalgia for a US that is long gone #auspol
