I am seriously considering going out to the range today for some practice. I am horrified at myself. And even more horrified at how most people in the USA are just going about their lives as though nothing is happening.

Brings back memories of winter trips in the Whites! My favorite was when I was up at Carter Notch on my birthday, the end of January. My wife and kids had slipped a birthday candle and a card into my pack. No open flames allowed in the hut, of course. That was when I discovered that candles will not burn if it is cold enough, no matter how long you use the lighter. The burning wick can’t make enough heat to vaporize the wax! I sat outside for too long learning this lesson.

I love my rock dove friends! Columba livia is a beautiful bird. When I was a teen, one flew into our open garage in a summer storm while I was in there. It stayed for quite a while until one day it decided to move on. Very smart, very friendly! (And no, no leg band, so probably not a lost domestic)

In the last 6 months, I went from thinking I was a cis-man who looked like I was a man (he/him), to realizing I was a trans woman who mostly still looked like a man, didn’t feel comfortable with applying the concept of gender binary to myself, and wasn’t ready to be out as a woman (they/them), to a non-binary trans woman who looks more like a woman every day (she/her). So, checking in on pronouns is always a good idea as some of us change them as our journey progresses.

I think most people are happy when someone cares enough to check on pronouns. Even if someone looks like a stereotypical cis-man or cis-woman, that doesn’t mean per pronouns are he or she. If person doesn’t have pronouns on per profile, I usually ask, no matter how they present. Or I use Marge Piercy’s person/per non-specific pronouns (what they/them were used for before they also became pronouns that some non-binary people use to indicate their non-binary identity.)

Sometimes, the client chooses the dick on purpose because the designer didn’t know what the client was really selling. Wife’s first graphic design client many decades ago (1980s) was selling Cuban cigars and wanted to run an ad with a picture of a cigar behind bars with the caption, “Our prices are so low it’s a crime!” They turned down every one of her designs. Eventually she sent them a very dick-looking cigar behind bars with a pornstar mustache. It was only when she saw a copy of the final ad that she discovered they were advertising in gay men’s magazines under the name Male Order Cigars.
Turns out, sometimes the client really did want a dick pic but was too embarrassed to say so.

Many of us still preserve foods with jars like these or the even simpler Ball/Mason jars. The jars are available here at just about every supermarket. While the USA was still a going concern, the USDA published guidelines on time and temperature for canning food, which is what it is called when you preserve things in jars. The metal cans were a more recent version of this technology. They will also keep food safe for decades. Whether in a metal can or a glass jar, canned food loses texture and color within about 5 years. As long as the seal remains good, the food remains safe and nutritious, although not always delicious.
And, yes, there are already warehouses full of canned food in many places, including the USA.

I dunno, I am fine with the capitalists sticking around as long as we can keep clawing back more of our wealth from them. If they leave, they’ll be taking all our money with them.
The best part of the millionaire surtax is that it is a start. Massachusetts had a mostly flat income tax for decades, so adding on the surtax for incomes over a million was the first small step towards more progressive tax rates.
