That's really not true in a quantitative way. The energy investment in renewables massively pays for itself in the consequent reduction of carbon-loading. And there is plenty of room for growth while still achieving huge net reductions.

You're out of date; Claude can write first-rate code, at least in Go. That fact does not imply that you should have it write your code for you, the trade-offs around that are complex and tbh we haven’t figured out the shape of the problem/solution space. Also social/financial negative externalities.

Yeah, I have connections with and have spent time in Melbourne, know about Aussie rules. It's definitely officially “soccer” all over North America, but among the fan community you hear both “football” and “footy”. In my blog I say “fútbol”.

Before the #worldcup started, a lot of non-American footy fans were thinking it'd be good if the US team went far and showed well, raise soccer consciousness in North America, etc. Trump & Infantino killed that in about 30 seconds, all those people are Belgium fans as of now.

Don't buy it. The “late-stage” is an intentional callout to medical terminology. We are trying to move our cats off US-made supermarket cat food to something local and alleged to be of better quality. There are 2 cats, fat/smart and black/dim. There are 2 food categories, dry & wet. So far we are 25% there, fat/smart has relented and accepts that the new dry food is edible.
As for the other 75% there are many puzzled looks (“what is this stuff in my bowl?”) and resentful glares (“you used to give me food, why aren’t you giving me food!”).
Wish us luck.

It's more complicated than that. Whatever, it’ll pop anyhow, the #genAI space will become a tiny, mostly open-source, fraction of what it is today, and at that point. we devs can use it without feeling guilty.

2026-04-16 00:22:04 UTC

So, more #genAI pain. By and large, the bubble's a bubble because the number of people out there in the business community who like it enough to be willing to pay for zillions of tokens, in aggregate trillions of dollars, is pretty small despite frantic pushing, and thus eventually it all pops.
There is an exception…

Actually, on Android (Pixel 10) the three-dots don't have an open-in-browser option. Big problem for me.

I guess I should add that the current cloud backup is S3/Glacier. Which there’s nothing wrong with except for it’s US-controlled. Anyone who trusts their past-and-future to a US-controlled Big Tech in 2026 is possibly making a Big Mistake.

Also bear Plan C in mind: Download the source and build the sucker. Many (not all) OSS projects build easily on MacOS.

Is this possibly another bug? That's my quote in the chain and it got quoted lots of times (and boosted probably zero) so the number after the rocket should maybe be 0+<number of quotes> or just quote glyph instead of rocket glyph?

Didn’t think it was possible that my contempt for FIFA could increase, but I was wrong.

In which, on the occasion of my 3-year migration anniversary and the release of Mastodon 4.5, I assemble all my arguments as to why Mastodon is great and why anyone else on a service that’s becoming less fun/safe/useful should migrate to Mastodon and do it now, in late 2025: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2025/11/03/Time-to-Migrate

Huh… CIRA runs the .ca TLD. Not high-profile but… seem to be OK?
[Tl;dr: They’re offering a free DNS resolver, Canadian-built and -run.]

Dear LazyWeb: I need to get my blog search off Google, it’s becoming unusable. Sometime in the last year I saw talk (Fedi posts I think?) about two different local-search packages (both JavaScript I think?). Thought I bookmarked ’em but can’t find ’em. Does this ring bells for anyone?

I trim all my pictures to max 1280x1280 and never had an issue. That size is *plenty* big enough for Fedi. Don't do much video.
