and even if the Delta Chat project died today, you would be able to keep using your #chatmail relay servers (or even just classic email servers) while when #Session goes down it seems the app will pretty much stop working properly, that doesn't sounds really decentralized

the takeaway is: millions of dollars were dropped into Session, at the end of the day you got a huge machinery that can't even continue without thousands of more dollars being burned every month, is it worth it???
all that money should have gone to more sustainable projects like #DeltaChat, Delta Chat relay servers are SUPER CHEAP to run and require near zero maintenance

but if it is just a meeting with a few people maybe some p2p calls like using webrtc would work, it would be all end-to-end encrypted and without needing to trust any company and also near zero server costs for them

big time! we have been working for weeks now and there should be a new release soon reducing the app size to the HALF!! smaller usage of your phone space and faster download speed for updates!!!
all it took was to remove the redundant end-to-end encryption feature since there is transport layer encryption already, one step closer to the golden security standard of Telegram you like and enjoy

a lot of the AC improvements are already part of DC, that is why by now the difference between both is really small
usually DC takes longer to accept the changes added AC, it is harder for DC to integrate things because it needs to be done in every DC client of each platform, etc

your stance as an artist is understandable, I can recommend you to use the official Delta Chat client instead that doesn't have "slop" artwork
it is super easy to move your profile from ArcaneChat to the Delta Chat client

@nprofile…g8hs it is harder to find assets that are free of copyright etc. and even then you have to browse a huge dataset to find what you want and like
also the assets have to use the colors and brand names and logos
actually most of the current artwork used to promote ArcaneChat has been created/tweaked by me in GIMP
there is no easy cheap solution if I want to create for example something like that image shared in this post that has colors that fit and saying "I love ArcaneChat" etc

some people seem to be offended by the usage of AI-generated content in the ArcaneChat social media account, guys, AI has been used in #ArcaneChat from its very conception:
the welcome image when you just installed the app is AI generated
even the app icon was ai-generated
AI is used to help development
that doesn't mean whatever random stuff gets added without careful review and lot manual work but:

are you dating? often the chats of dating apps are not good or private, giving your phone number to someone you are just starting to get to know is also not a good idea
you could use #ArcaneChat to chat with them, with a dedicated profile, if after first date things didn't go well you could just drop the profile and avoid some random person having your phone number

@nprofile…jrj5 due to how the encryption works, you send a single message to everyone, but inside you needed to encrypt the message to every recipient so they can decrypt it, by this a subscriber could known the other cryptographic identities of the channel and how many people was the message sent to
now it is encrypted with a single key for everyone, and everyone have to get access to the decryption key when joining so they can decrypt

@nprofile…d7gv that feature was called "broadcasting lists" in the past and worked completely differently, it was unencrypted at the beginning and arriving in 1:1 chat, then it was encrypted but leaking members's identity
due to changes needed to make it more secure and private without leaking the subscribers, and make it scalable to thousands of subscribers, and to make it reliable it needed to be as it is today, maybe a way to bring back manual addition is figured out in the future

just create another inbox for chatting address
create a new profile with the new address
keep the old profile for reading email (if wanted)
now you can read both in Delta Chat, having two addresses works as a more effective filter without needing extra server rules that are hard to configure for most people and can break at any time as Delta Chat minimize header metadata

@nprofile…74kp nope, latest release already introduced the possibility to add more than one relay at a time, also migrating from one server to another is super easy already today, unlike in many other platforms, you can migrate keeping all your contacts, chats, messages and without disruptions
next step will be properly implementing multi-homing and final step is registration in several servers/relays by default instead of just the default arcanechat.me server, this gives maximum resilience to people

for the ones curious about what 8% of disk usage means here: it is a bit less than 40GB for the whole system, but the users mailboxes only take 17GB
that means: 17GB divided by 10k users equals 0.0017GB (~1.7KB) average used per user! 🤯

also a huge burden admins don't have with chatmail is that they don't have to deal with user account creation and deletion, or user (encrypted) data deletion, everything is automated

arcanechat.me server reached 10k users! 🎉🎉🎉
the server is still using just ~1.50GB of RAM and almost 0% of CPU, disk is at 8% used only (including whole operative system files etc)
it is extremely cheap to host thousands of users for #ArcaneChat / #DeltaChat with a #chatmail relay
I also just check the server like once per month just in case to check everything is fine, but it literally causes near ZERO maintenance cost, no problems, it just works you can practically forget the server exists

@nprofile…a98j that is a misconception! it uses SMTP+IMAP protocols but it is not email, everything is end-to-end encrypted! you can give it a try, there is a contact invite link at https://arcanechat.me/#contact if you want to test it with someone

1) the server is not proprietary, it is just a normal email server with #postfix + #dovecot configured optimized for chatting without rate-limits see https://chatmail.at
2) they didn't assign you forcefully a server, you choose to proceed with the default onboarding, there was a "use other server" button right in that screen with option to use other chatmail or your own classic email server
the default server will change to random in the future when multi-relay is ready

@nprofile…6nna we need to make alternatives like #DeltaChat more popular, it is decentralized and people can migrate from server to server without losing their messages, chats or contacts, in fact your contacts don't even get disturbed by your migration, your data is really owned by you and you are not tied to a particular server, we need more software like this

@nprofile…qu7r well it depends on the context, I am Cuban, that Delta Chat used email was the whole point I started using it and contributing, besides cheaper data plan for national email, you see down there in the 3rd world on an unstable 2g connection at 1kb/s #email, asynchronity and offline-first comes on top of #xmpp which together with #Telegram really struggles to even get connected, in a fast hyperconnected 1st world this might be less relevant until some emergency times or in isolated areas
