The Lemmy community that we shared in the post above is not ours. They don't focus only on European products, although they also do graphics like this one with only-European alternatives. 🙂
We wouldn't have shared it if they hadn't specified the origin (with the flags). So, anyone who follows us can see which ones aren't European. They can exclude those options from their intentions, just like we do.
The main reason we shared it is because we appreciate their effort in categorizing and organizing information, and the design. It's user-friendly, and they show options and let people decide based on their values or preferences.
As this movement grows, we think it'll become more and more important to share lists considering the different aspects (ethics, non-profit, privacy, environment, labor rights etc.) so people can choose for themselves.

We like the work being done by https://lemmy.world/u/FallenWalnut. They compile information regarding European and Canadian alternatives, as many do now (like us), but they also generate visually appealing graphics (not like us! 😅) that differentiate services using labels depending on the people's preferences, such as privacy, environmental considerations, profit share, nationality, and so on. This is a lot of work!
And they seem to be receptive to feedback, so if you have a differing opinion on a labeling matter or find new information about a company or open source solution, you can leave them a comment. 🙂

Our latest European shiny alternative is Pixii 🇫🇷, a French camera manufacturer. 📷
The company was founded in 2017 by David Barth, an entrepreneur who worked on Linux development for Ubuntu for almost 10 years, helping to develop and make Ubuntu more accessible.
He couldn't find the photo camera he wanted, so he decided to make one.
Pixii cameras are designed and made in Besançon, a city famous for its watchmaking and precision engineering. The final assembly of the camera happens there, but the parts that make up the camera come from different places. The mechanical parts are made in the Vosges region of France, while the electronic components are sourced from Germany and China.
The company's graphical designer, Isabelle Colas, has experience from the luxury and watchmaking industries, and she is responsible for the #Pixii cameras' elegant design. Her work has won the company awards like the Red Dot Design Award.
Pixii is competing with Leica 🇩🇪, but it works with #Leica's lenses. It's aimed both at #photography fans and the "Instagram generation". Despite challenges in increasing production, Barth's approach has attracted international attention and financial backing, including investments from people with experience in the industry.

🎵 We listen to a lot of music from different countries and languages, so we go to concerts, have CDs and vinyl, but most of the time we listen to music via streaming services.
As part of the #BuyFromEU movement, we will personally try to listen to more music from Europe, especially from other European countries other than our own, but we need suggestions.
What if we did this together? This can help us discover a lot of nice music from our European friends. 😀 🇪🇺
So we thought it might be nice to create themed playlists with songs from different European artists.
Instead of letting the algorithm of your music streaming app decide our weekly recommendations based on paid content from record labels, the random recommendations of the Mastodon community could expand our musical horizons and help boosting European music. 🎻
Each week we could define a theme (e.g. music for a rainy day, songs with clever lyrics, etc.) and invite everyone to recommend a European song that fits the theme. We would collect the suggestions and create a public playlist somewhere (where?).
To decide on weekly themes, we could make polls a week in advance and on a certain day everyone would submit their song suggestions.

Do you know JOPLIN? It's a nice European alternative to apps like Evernote, Google Keep, Notion, Microsoft OneNote.
Joplin is a free, open source note-taking and to-do application, which can handle a large number of notes organised into notebooks. You can search your notes, copy them, tag them and modify them either from the app itself or from your own text editor. The notes are in Markdown format, which is great.
It was created by Laurent Cozic 🇫🇷 back in 2016 as an alternative to Evernote. It's cloud service is hosted in Paris, France. They focus on privacy, security and transparency.
It's open source and offline-first, so you can always access your data on the device, even when you're not connected to the internet.
It's got all the basics you'd expect, and you can also attach images, videos, audio files and PDFs to your notebooks.
There's a huge community of people who have made extra features possible with their plugins.
It's also super easy to export and import your files, which is great if you're worried about vendor lock-in.
The handy web clipper extension lets you save web pages or take screenshots in the browser and save them to your notes.

⚠️ To avoid temptations, if you don't need one, don't visit their website or watch their videos, otherwise you may end up buying one, as we did. We love it but it's not cheap, as they only produce it in small quantities. ⚠️
The reMarkable is an E Ink writing tablet designed for reading documents and textbooks, sketching, and taking notes. It's designed to feel like writing on paper.
What we like the most:
- you can read #ebooks or documents in various formats, including pdf. It's like a Kindle. And you can make notes in your ebooks, for example.
- it REALLY feels like you're writing and sketching on paper. It's impressively well done ✏️
- there are many of different templates you can use and download on the internet 📃
- you can write notes by hand and convert them into digital text. It can even translate your handwritten text into another language 💬
- you can also automatically save your files in the cloud and in your computer. 💻 ☁️

Most of them offer free accounts to get you started.
Just create an account and have a play around with the interface. Check all the settings and filter options to see what they offer. Send yourself an email from your current inbox to see how it looks and how long it takes to arrive.
And remember, there are full teams working to build these products. It costs money. A lot! 💰
Imagine being on their team, really happy with every new client that's come from a competitor. 🥳
Gmail was launched in 2004. It took 20 years to get to where it is now.
Give a chance to little tech companies that are trying hard to build a modern ethical alternative without having illegal revenues like Google. They need money to pay developers, devops, security team, project managers, analysts, designers, audits, HR and marketing teams, accessibility experts, etc. It's expensive to hire professionals who can go fast, safe and scale.
Building digital products is hard, complex... and beautiful. 😍
Give them a chance to thrive. They need consumers and followers. Don't attack them if a button isn't working. Send them constructive feedback.
And if you like it after testing, you can always recommend them to your family, friends and followers. 😉

The De-google-ify Internet project offers 26 ethical and alternative online tools that may be used by everyone.
They build open source alternatives to many Google services like Youtube, Agenda, Docs, Forms, Maps etc, as well other services to replace Doodle, Facebook Event, Github, Zoom, Slack and much more!
